It was a short term decision. On Monday after Challenge Davos was cancelled 5k into the bike, I still was not sure if I would do 70.3 LesSables, 70.3 Tallinn or no race at all. The travel to Tallinn looked pretty easy (direct flight from Frankfurt). Even after Germany became a member of the red Covid list (we had to do two PCR tests, one at home & one at the airport in Tallinn). But a lot of flights from other countries got re-routed and so it ended up being a full flight. Of course something went wrong with our bike reservation. Thanks to @lufthansa for making it work. I’m not sure, if I will be able to bring it back though,... The hospitality is amazing here and I want to thank Ain-Alar and his whole team from @ironman_estonia for putting up this event. If you’re looking for a pr - the bike course is one of the fastest I’ve ever seen. Wishing everybody who is racing this weekend good luck. THE BORDERS, SCOTLAND I had been travelling in the border country and from a busy road I saw this post and rail fence and was immediately compelled to turn round and retrace my steps. This fence was so much more than a mere structure. It was a masterpiece . I wished to meet the person who made this work, to encourage them to talk me through it, to acquaint me with every hazard, every joy of its construction and o know something of their elation at the end of their toils. Like the autumn ploughman looking back at his furrows so accurately aligned, there is pleasure in accuracy. Once there was a type of film available with a dedicated speed of one thousand asa. It had certain applications and its boost was grain and accordingly low contrast. Like many I cared for it deeply. Sadly, it was withdrawn, but a few months beforehand, a photographer friend in the USA panicked and acquired a thousand rolls, such was his addiction. I had not waned to use a fine grain film here. The wooden fence I felt should not appear too invasive upon the land. I hoped that the coarseness of the film would unify fence, hill and grass.The wood of the fence had weathered, and its warm silvery grey sat well on the slope of the November grass. Thankfully, there was no vivid blue in the sky to conflict with the browns and steely greys. Aeolus was built in San Diego, California in 1904, she is an extreme plank-on-edge design (narrow beam, very deep draft, V shaped in section with all the ballast inside the boat). The designer is unknown but Kunhardt developed a GL Watson inspired rig. Originally she was raced successfully and later was used for chartering. She was re-built in 1982-3 with the keelson as the only original piece of timber left. She is double planked in cedar to the waterline with light timbers of iron wood. The topsides are fir and the deck is triple planked finished in Port Orford cedar. She was imported into the UK in 2003 and in five years had three owners who improved her but did little sailing as her spars and sail plan was over-canvassed. This resulted in excessive weather helm and an un-seaworthy boat. Anthony Wheaton purchased her in 2008 and is continuing her improvement. He has replaced the over-canvassed rig which had a boom that overhung the counter by 10ft with a balanced sail plan designed by Ed Burnett.
