Grabó solos memorables y muchas de sus interpretaciones justifican su fama, pero la forma en que él atrapaba al “espíritu de la música” a través del sonido de sus grupos es lo que lo hace único. Para eso se rodeó de los mejores artistas de su tiempo, muchos de los cuales eran sólo promesas cuando Miles los convocó. Se enroló en cada nuevo movimiento que fue surgiendo y lo llevó a lo más alto, para rápidamente iniciar una nueva senda y volver a sorprender. Su discografía es enorme y difícil de abarcar, desde los comienzos del Bebop, junto a Charlie Parker; el Cool y el Hard Bop con los arreglos de Gil Evans; el Jazz Modal junto a Bill Evans y John Coltrane; el Post Bop con Herbie Hancock y Wayne Shorter; y el Jazz fusión compartido con John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul, Keith Jarret y George Benson. Aquí hizo una pausa para dedicarse, según él, al sexo y a las drogas. Miles había logrado mantenerse limpio durante muchos años. Ver la decadencia en la que caían sus compañeros le había servido para enfocarse en el arte, pero a mediados de los 70 algo pasó. Tal vez la crisis de los 50, tal vez la falta de interés. Por suerte, en 1980 encontró la motivación junto a un grupo de desconocidos entre los que estaban Marcus Miller, John Scofield, Darryl Jones, Mike Stern y Kenny Garret, con los que sorprendió al mundo grabando temas de Michael Jackson y Cyndi Laupher e incluyendo secciones de Rap. Y cuando muchos pensábamos que el bueno de Miles se estaba ablandando, nos abofetea con Tutu, una obra maestra del Funk Rock. Alcanzó a grabar 3 discos más hasta que el 28 de septiembre de 1991, a los 65 años, un accidente cerebrovascular se lo llevó con su música a otra parte. Repost @piersfaccini : photos by @timotheehilst taken end of june during the recording the new songs from my next album, Shapes of the Fall. I’d been crafting the songs for over a year, living with them for months, waiting to tease them out into the light. Dressing and undressing them to find the right cut, colour and cloth for them, hunting for the right flow and dance between word, note and rhythm. I realised that every time I set out to write a new collection of songs, I wonder if the spring will still drip generously with that mysterious water of inspiration, I try not to expect anything and to be happy if nothing comes. And yet happily, still they come, seemingly out of nowhere, song-creatures born and taking their own shape. The process is almost like midwifery, accompanying and facilitating the birth of the songs into the world and when they’re finished and the last touch has been laid down, it genuinely feels like I did nothing at all, as if these little songs had always been there waiting for the right time to bud and then bear fruit. And when the writing’s done, it‘s then time to record and to seek a whole other set of alchemical tools to capture the songs at their emotional peak. I co-produced the record with the amazing sound engineer and musician Fred Soulard and we recorded at the wonderful farmhouse and studio @studioblackboxfrance . I couldn’t have hoped for a better team, the incredible Malik and Karim Ziad as well as my brother in music, Simone Prattico and the fantastic @orianelacaille who joined us to play percussion on a few songs. On the record, there are also a few more surprises but I’ll keep those under wraps for now as we’re not done yet.. TONIGHT at 6pm EST! ISSUE is pleased to stream a performance from Heroes Are Gang Leaders, literary free jazz ensemble of writers, artists and musicians as a part of the 2020 Brooklyn Book Festival. Featuring a fourteen member band, the streamed performance features the full group’s line up as well as multiple embedded solos and ensemble formations of the group’s various members. Heroes Are Gang Leaders was founded in 2014 by poet, photographer and professor Thomas Sayers Ellis and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis as a tribute to the late poet, activist and Jazz Critic Amiri Baraka. Hoy se cumple un año de la primera salida a escena de PAN, así que aunque no podemos encontrarnos a festejar como quisiéramos, tocando juntxs y para al público que llenó C cada jueves antes de la cuarentena, lo estamos celebrando por acá. Juntando más y más ganas de volver apenas se pueda a celebrar la vida, el ritmo y el baile. PAN es un sueño cumplido: poder improvisar música rítmica con mi sistema de señas, con alguno de lxs músicxs y ritmistas que más admiro en el mundo y con quienes he aprendido y aprendo cada vez, y compartiendo cada jueves con un público que viene a ser feliz, a bailar sin prejuicios y a jugar con nosotrxs. Y hacer de ese espacio tremendo que es C para Buenos Aires, un lugar donde eso sucede tan orgánicamente, gracias nuestro increíble equipo de producción, que no puede más del amor y pilas que le pone. Durante esta cuarentena perdimos a nuestro querido amigo Cheikh, aunque en el grupo lo tenemos tan presente que sé que va a seguir siendo siempre parte de PAN, con su cariño y su música, y su sabiduría tan especial, a quien invocaremos y nos acompañárá en cada show. El placer enorme de tocar y ser parte de este grupo cumple un año, junto Cheikh, a Milo Moya, Facu Guevara, Nico Sorín, Caro Cohen, Sergio Verdinelli, Nico Cota, Gonza Arévalo, Santi Ablín, y el Mono Fontana, que en los últimos meses no pudo sumarse los jueves pero que tiene la banqueta con su nombre siempre lista para él. Ale Mazzei produciendo todo, junto a Panchi, con Lean, y con tantas otras personas de nuestro equipo, y también del equipo de C, que ponen todo su saber y su amor para que sea real esa fiesta que soñamos y empezamos a gestar hace mas de un par de años. A todos muy feliz cumple y mil gracias.
