We’ve be told for 50 years that we need a more plant-based diet. If we reduced animal fats and cholesterol, we could eliminate heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Americans fell in line with these guidelines and reduced consumption of eggs, dairy and beef by over 35%. The result was no change in heart disease and epidemic increases in obesity, diabetes, and over 40 million Americans taking statin drugs. CDC mortality data for C0V1D-19 shows that 94% of the deaths occurred in older adults with 2.6 comorbidities of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and breathing problems. It’s important to realize that Americans already get over 70% of their calories from plant-based foods but the calories are coming from sugar, oils and refined grains. We don’t need a diet with more plant-based foods, we need diets with better plants. Muscles and a healthy body composition requires creating an optimal balance of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and calories. Broccoli can be part of that solution but the best and most efficient way to do that is with a balance of animals and plants. Animal-based foods provide a nutrient-dense food that is not easily replaced with plant-based items. Meat provides over 7g of high-quality protein in every ounce while broccoli contains about 2.5 g of lower quality protein per cup. If your goal is to get 35 g of high-quality protein at each meal (which you need in order to protect your muscle health and body composition), you can do that with 5 oz of meat... but it would require 14 cups of broccoli and the balance of essential amino acids in the broccoli would still not be equal to the meat. Let’s not confuse the great qualities of broccoli with the great qualities of meat, eggs, and dairy. They each have their role in a high quality, well-balanced diet, but they are certainly not equivalent. - @drgabriellelyon on Instagram

It happened to me too. . . When I recovered from B.E.D I lost three friendships that were important to me at that time. . . While they didn’t explicitly tell me that they didn’t support my recovery, their actions made it quite clear. . . They were not in support of my adopting healthier behaviours around food. . . They were not supportive of the fact that I was able to pursue new opportunities as a result of recovery, one of which included dating after not being able to do so for quite some time, which I now understand may have been largely in part due to my eating disorder. . . They were not supportive of the goals I had towards a better life for myself. . . I’ve probably made these three girls sound totally evil. I wouldn’t say that they are. But I WOULD definitely say that I played a role in this group that recovery would cause me to no longer fulfil. . . That role was the girl who was always free on a Saturday night because she was dateless. The girl who didn’t have much fashion sense because she wore baggy clothing to hide herself. The girl who was always down to eat in large quantities with you ( and eating large meals is great and can be fun but in my case it was part of ongoing binges), but was actually losing herself in the food and not managing her real emotions. . . So I made the choice years ago to walk away. . . At first, it was hard. Really hard. I questioned my decision constantly even though others affirmed I was right. But when I look at my life years later recovered I know I’m so much happier. I have friends that truly care about me and know how much I care about them. I’m able to exercise for joy and health and not to shrink. I am able to enjoy meals with others where I feel present and not using food to numb. . . I’m telling you this so you know that if you need to or needed to walk away from certain people to maintain your recovery, that this is not only okay, but normal. . .
