Reading about Ruth Bader Ginsburgs mother this morning brought me to tears even as it reminded me of an unassailable truth: we do not always see the fruits of our labor in this world. But that doesnt make them any less urgent. If you are an American with any sort of conscience, I dont see how you sit out this fall, regardless of your feelings towards Biden and Harris (who, yes, have some objectionable positions and history!) Its beyond them. Our country is burning, quite literally from wildfires, and from preventable deaths from both Covid-19 and a police state set in place to uphold white supremacy and a history of violence. Another truth of this world? Governments fall. Societies slip into fascist states all the time and faster than youd think, and alarm bells have been ringing for the United States for years now. Take action and get in the fight today. Might we still fail? Yes. But if an eighty-seven-year old woman could fight to her dying breath for your rights, you can vote (and if you dont think this is going to galvanize conservatives and Republicans into action, Ive got a bridge to sell you...) How to take action? 1) Check your voter registration and make a plan to vote. Make sure your friends and family have done the same. 2) Call your senators and tell them you dont want a Supreme Court justice chosen until after the election. If theyre a Republican, remind them its their own damn precedent. 3) Pick 1-2 candidates to support in flipping the Senate. 4) Consider registering as a poll worker and getting involved with efforts to get out the vote and get voters to the polls. Nothing I write could ever make one iota of difference for what the black community is going through. But what can make a difference from here on out is what I, as a white man, do. The past few days Ive been processing these scenes and trying to wrap my head around how a country with such a violent, disgusting past seems incapable of moving on. What hatred is instilled in people and from what age? What is not being taught in schools? What is whispered in the ears of police while they are getting their qualifications? How can police so frequently be the ones in breach of the law and more often than not, get away with it? I have so many fucking questions and Im one of the lucky ones. I cannot fathom of 43+ MILLION people must feel on a daily basis. This senseless, cold blooded murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police has led black America to their breaking point. How can they handle anymore? There have been HUNDREDS of other incidents, that no one should ever forget in the running to this very moment. I see these protests and I watch on and all I can say is, I understand. Make no mistake, it is awful, the emotional damage done in the community will be nothing short of heartbreaking. Businesses will be lost. Jobs will be lost. Worse still, black business and jobs will be hit hard too. Millions if not billions, that could have been spent in better ways, will have to be pumped into rebuilding what is destroyed. But the most harrowing thing is how many more lives may be lost as a result of protesting in the midst of a pandemic. Black people are already statistically at a disadvantage when it comes to COVID, not because of any genetic susceptibility but for the same compounding environmental reasons that have led to where we are now. Why should they have to risk sickness and potentially death to have their voices heard? Many, many more will die from COVID, no doubt. But a percentile of those deaths will belong to Derek Chauvin and the 3 accessories to the murder of George Floyd. It is unforgivable. Today we took part in the European Day of action against Datteln4- the only new coal power plant in Western Europe. This then followed with an arts workshop of art for future events Some information of Datteln4: The plant is owned by a Düsseldorf- based energy company called Uniper, began running on Saturday after a nearly 10 year delay to its initial start date. It fired up just months after Germany unveiled a plan to phase out coal by 2030. The two main problems of Datteln4: 1. Coal is very harmful to the climate crisis as the coal combustion emits incredible amounts of CO2 each year (16 million tons on average, and that’s just CO2) 2. Uniglitterlabs, which is pretty popular in the cosplay community, has pretty much decided to side with the oppressor. They stated they wouldn’t post to their feed this week and want a safe space, but they’re out here posting to their stories with a new color that’s in bad taste to the current situation. When I asked them about what they’re trying to promote and told them about how bad of a timing this is, it was met with a tone deaf answer. They also deleted a reply that was much more politically clear, that they did not care and do not want to understand the importance of Black Live Matter. I was unable to read all of it since they deleted their answer faster than I could open Instagram. What I got from my notifications was that they essentially said George Floyd had already gotten justice. In which he has not the cops still need to be prosecuted. I can’t get their sketchy comments back, but don’t support companies that won’t support you and refuse to take action. TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF MASJID SULTAN ON 28 AUG Assalamualaikum wr. wb. The Ministry of Health (MOH) has informed Muis that an individual who visited Masjid Sultan on 18 Aug 2020 between 2.33 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. has tested positive for COVID-19. Accordingly, Masjid Sultan will be closed tomorrow (Friday 28 Aug) for thorough disinfection, and reopen on Saturday 29 Aug. All bookings for congregational prayer tomorrow will be automatically voided, including booking for Friday prayers. Those who had obtained slots for the Friday prayers will be eligible to book for future slots, subject to availability. The infected individual did not exhibit any symptoms when he visited the mosque, and was only subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. MOH has been doing contact tracing and placed his close contacts under quarantine. Nevertheless, congregants who had been to the mosque during that time are advised to monitor their health until at least 1 Sep, and to immediately see a doctor if unwell. This incident is a timely reminder on the importance of the safe management measures in place at the mosque, so that we are able to immediately take corrective action and not have to close the mosque for an extended period.
