With the only subject in the news this week and matches held behind closed doors and now cancelled - I’ve spent a decent time wondering what sport is without fans? Without fans surely top flight competition such as the rugby sevens tournament I photographed a couple of weeks ago has the same relevance as me playing for a seven a side football team or racing in an 8am cyclocross race. With all sport effectively cancelled for the next few months my thoughts are very much with my fellow freelancers from both in sport and photography, as well as those outside of sport, photography and events who will likely struggle for work. In Nov 2008, my ToysRUs Manager asked me to dress as Geoffrey the Giraffe and be the “Master of Ceremony” for the Autism Speak Walk in Anaheim at Angel Stadium. I got to meet a bunch of kids while walking awhile as Geoffrey in the hot sun. No sarcasm, I had a really fun time doing it. There along with me was the 501st Legion, the International Organization of Star Wars fans with legit costumes. For the opening ceremony I was dead center leading stretches in front of the crowd with with Stormtroopers, Boba Fett, Vader, and other Star Wars character flanking both sides of me. I found this photo in my computer, literally the only cool photo I have of the event. While we were on break in our holding area, we were messing around and someone suggested that one of the stormtrooper put on the Geoffrey head.
