Untitled, London England, 1966⠀ Gordon Parks⠀ ⠀ Edition 5 of 10 Our recently acquired piece by Gordon Parks features his intimate and nuanced portrait of the legendary athlete and human rights advocate Muhammad Ali. Receiving unprecedented access to the champion, Gordon Parks photographed and profiled Ali twice for Life magazine. Parks met Ali during his training in Miami, before flying to London to document the run up to his fight against Henry Cooper. Upon meeting Ali in Florida in 1966, Parks wrote in Life: I felt free to tell him quite directly that I had come to Miami to see whether he was really as obnoxious as people were making him out to be. Ali replied: “No need to beat about the bush, brother.. I know why you came.” Despite the 30-year age difference, the two men began an extraordinary friendship. #modernancientbrown #gordonparks - @modernancientbrown on Instagram

Spotlight on “Matter of the Mind” participating artist Juan Carlos Alom (Havana, Cuba, 1964), photographer and filmmaker is especially known for his hand-processed 16mm black and white experimental films. “My camera is the compass that guides me and I am grateful to it. Everywhere I have lived, I have delivered myself to light, shadows and to those details that, however minimal they may seem, have made me tremble and convert them into images. I had hardly begun working as a photojournalist when the scarcity brought about by the Soviet Union’s collapse obliged me to experiment, shaping my artistic vision into one that is driven by precariousness, spontaneity and the necessity to focus on distinct themes such as Afro-Cuban religion, youth, longitude. Even more than those isolated themes, my idiosyncrasy, as both a filmmaker and photographer, entails the quest to document the impossible….I am committed to the value of artistic liberty. I dream about forging a career…with dissonance, twists and endless risk-taking.” - Juan Carlos Alom Shown here: “Solo tu cabes en la palma de mi mano”, (1991) Digital print on photographic paper 308 g 1 m x 1 m // 40 x 40 cm “Matter of the Mind” artists: Juan Carlos Alom Liz Capote Ariamna Contino Raúl Cordero Mari Claudia García Florencio Gelabert Alejandro González Glenda León José Manuel Mesías Jorge Otero Alejandro Piñeiro José Yaque Thank you @the.olympia.project for hosting!
