I see so many people with spinal injuries doing this wrong The trouble is most of us want to recover from injury but are doing it by scrolling Instagram for a few techniques/exercises hoping to find the perfect system to reconstruct our spine. Here’s the thing. Striving for full recovery from an injury rarely works by throwing together random techniques. Building SUSTAINABLE results requires much more. In fact, it’s sort of the exact opposite. Getting results takes SEQUENCING and BALANCE. For example the exercises in the post target spinal rehab for greater postural endurance and symmetry. But They’re only ONE of several pieces of the puzzle. Lack of sequencing is the epitome of POOR Results in rehab. Nothing will constipate your progress like lack of sequencing. [MEETING HIM] Throwback to the days we looked about 12 and got quality sleep. 😚This was Dane’s 30th and the night I was meeting more of his family and friends after only being together for a few weeks. Holy heck, love was in the air! 💕For those that know our story, you know things moved lightning fast. ⚡️From a chance first meeting to moving in together within 2 weeks, to being engaged within 6 months, to being pregnant at our wedding 🤰🏻- you could say we didn’t slow down for nobody. 💨We just knew. The oddest thing was - for me it was when I stopped looking for love that it came knocking on my door. Our journey together has been a wild ride and like any couple we’ve encountered our fair share of challenges and whilst we don’t always agree on everything or have it altogether we are on the same page when and where it counts.🥰 This guy - my life accomplice - I’m thankful every day that our paths collided exactly when it was meant to. I’m so proud of us for putting each other, and the family and life we’ve created, above anything else. 👫Above everything else. We choose us - when its beautiful and thriving, when its hard and damn well FN tiring, when its fun and out-there, and when its ground hog day, mundane and monotonous. ‘Marriage isn’t 50-50 - at all - It’s more like 100-100, with room to go higher or lower depending on what kind of day you’re having. 🙌🏼We all want to give 100% of our best selves every day, but that’s not always possible. There are going to be days when we have to pick each other up and on those days it may be 80-20. Some days we’ll be the 80 and some days we’ll be the 20. No, I didnt mess up the text in this infographic. Having increased ankle dorsiflexion motion may actually INCREASE stress on the knee during training. ⠀ .⠀ To start, having dynamic valgus (Knee in) at the knee (during squats and other lower body exercises) can create more stress on the patellofemoral joint (PFJ). Dynamic valgus specifically lateralizes stress on the PF joint and decreases surface area in the joint to dissipate force. If you lack ankle dorsiflexion then the body can compensate with increased subtalar and foot motion. This can create dynamic valgus and subsequent stress on the PFJ.⠀ .⠀ Hoewever, we actually have some research to show that in adolescents with PFJ pain, they actually have INCREASED ankle dorsiflexion mobility (and more foot and subtalar motion) - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21622633. ⠀ .⠀ From a biomechanical stand point, folks with more ankle dorsiflexion can:⠀ .⠀ - Stay more upright in a squat (allowing the quads a better position to produce force)⠀ - Allow increased forward translation of the knee⠀ - Allow increased knee flexion⠀ ⠀ All of these factors can actually increase stress on the knee. So it makes sense that having a ton of ankle dorsiflexion doesnt necessarily mean perfect knee health and can potentially increase stress there.⠀ .⠀ What are your thoughts? We are building a back ladies!!   This is the only progress picture I’ve taken as for me personally, I don’t want to trigger wanting to enter a cut while I’m on a good roll with building. You have to know yourself and where your head is at mentally.   This is Feb to Sept. In talking w/ @sdangerfit we notice additional lat width, along with additional shoulder and bicep growth. Just imagine once we cut down a little bit of body fat and really reveal that muscle!!   Likely nothing was really happening Feb to late May as gym’s were closed down and my at home workouts were maintaining at best. Much lighter weights and only 3-ish workouts a week.   ‪May 18th gyms opened up and I hit the ground running for over 4 months now! We’ve been lifting 5 days a week in a Push, Legs, Pull, Upper and Lower split. The biggest emphasis on #progressiveoverload I have ever had.‬   I’m talking lifting weights going up every single week. Maybe not on every single exercise, but on a LOT of them. I had to open my MIND to the fact that girls can use 40, 50, 55 lb (and higher) dumbbells. And then my body followed suit.   Longer rest periods, focusing on the basic exercises on repeat. Going back for more weight when there is any question of if I can handle more.   Eating intuitively with a maintenance/build mindset, not tracking macros.   On random nights before bed I will do a quick add up in my head of what I ate that day. Majorly estimating (i.e. apple 100 cals, or big-ish dinner 500 cals, etc.) and I would say I’m eating anywhere between 1800 and 2200 calories, mostly higher on the weekends when I enjoy an alcoholic beverage or restaurant meal.   Building has been about so much more than any aesthetic change (bc lets be serious, building is hard on the body image side of things). I enjoy working on my craft in the gym, and moving around big weights is extremely empowering. Performance based goals fill my cup up. Every single workout this week was FORCED! I literally didn’t want to go to any of them. Want to know why I still show up? It’s not motivation. I’m not motivated to work out most times. I don’t get paid to workout. I hear people say all the time. “Jordan I just had a bad day, I’m not motivated”. Listen, NO ONE is motivated to workout. Unless your a social influencer or someone that maybe gets paid to work out. This is much more than that. I’d much rather binge watch Yellowstone than go workout, trust me! I simply just hold myself to a much higher standard when it comes to my body. It is the one thing I have control over. No one else can control what I put into my mouth, how active I am, my recovery, my sleep, my coping of stress (I didn’t say stress, I said MY coping of stress). The way I handle it. That’s all in MY control. Plain and simple. I used to think I had issues because if I went 2 or 3 days without working out I’d hate myself. I’d go crazy. You ever been there? You go on vacation and you want to come home because you haven’t been able to work out? You feel like shit? If you’re there, then Great. Don’t try and fight it. Embrace it. Accept the fact that you’re different. And it’s okay to be different. It’s okay to hold yourself to a higher standard. At the end of the day, the body is all we got. So take care of it, treat it wisely. In my opinion it is the greatest gift you will ever receive. It isn’t just someone you see hunched over and crying in pain. It’s also the strong, resilient, funny, ambitious and lively man/woman that may not “show” signs of struggle. It also looks like this photo.⁣ ⁣ I actually hold back a little but when it comes to opening up about this...but I want to be super vulnerable bc I know this can save a life.⁣ ⁣ My tag line “Suicidal to CEO” that you see and I bring up...it’s not like I one day felt hopeless and like I didn’t want to be here to then being on top of the world and never feeling that low again. I’d be lying if i act like that’s the case. Because it still shows up to this day. And we should start showing more of the “normal” things we go through (highs and lows) when it comes to mental health.⁣ ⁣ Even with success, unimaginable internal growth, thriving businesses, my relationship and friendships and more than I could ask for in my life, I still have nights where I question myself, if I matter and who really cares.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes I don’t know how I’ll be okay during these seasons, but I DO know it’s temporary. Tiny Space 3rd Odalisque Variation — swapped out a few of the arabesque to pirouette repetitions for what felt like 100 arabesques en relevé. I’m a little amazed that I can do all those arabesques on that leg as I’ve sprained that ankle so many times. Just saying🤷🏽‍♂️...soft tissue work can be extremely beneficial, but if you NEED a ton of it just to feel comfortable in a deep squat or deadlift, you need to rearrange your priorities & really analyze how well & often you’re moving during the rest of the day. . Here’s the deal. If this sounds like you, start setting an alarm on your phone to sit in a deep squat (even a goblet squat or holding on to a rack for assistance counts) a few times during the day. Grab your backpack at school or briefcase at work & get a few weight shift stretches in during a quick break (this exercise can be found on YouTube under the title “the BEST hip opener). Here’s powerlifting coach @lbbylbgarrett greasing some corrective drills for right hip and knee pain while squatting...the first video is a reactive drill to correct compensatory hip abduction and external rotation for limited hip flexion...the drill in the second video is to increase trunk stability via pelvic floor integration to allow for better hip flexion as he gets deeper into the squat...after a few moments of greasing these drills he was able to squat with a noted decrease in pain...the best place to incorporate these drills would be as part of his warm-up, with the goal being to recalibrate neuromuscular timing and sequencing, then reinforce the pattern with load... - @roccaathleticdevelopment on Instagram

I SO resonate with this, so I have to repost from @maxlugavere . Reminder that it is not only totally okay and deeply human to change your perspective on things when presented with new information, but it’s also quite scientific! . I once thought that brown rice was unequivocally better than white rice. But now I know that brown rice grown in certain parts of the US (namely the south) has high levels of arsenic in its bran, and that if you don’t know where your brown rice comes from its probably a good idea to eat white (the tiny amount of fiber in the brown vs. white is negligible). . As a protein powder user, I also once was a fan of vegan protein powders and didn’t really care what flavor. But since veg protein powders are highly processed and a report by the Clean Label Project found that they often contain heavy metals like lead, I like to play it safe and now really only use whey protein which goes through far fewer processing steps to create and is unlikely to contain heavy metals. . I now only generally will use vanilla protein because a 2010 Consumer Reports study found that whey protein powders also contained heavy metals, but vanilla flavors generally contained far less lead, arsenic, and cadmium then chocolate flavors, I’m guessing because low quality cacao powders can accumulate high levels of heavy metals and vanilla doesn’t. (Also, many industrially grown plant foods also contain heavy metals unfortunately, and while a certain degree of ingestion is inevitable, it’s probably best to minimize where you can.) . I’m a UGGGE fan of Bulgarian split squats, and what I’m an even HUGERRRR fan of is doing them with a front rack load (barbell or kettlebells) AND a resistance band! This movement combines a terminal knee extension PT exercise to help reinforce knee extension, while also combining RNT (reactivate neural training) principle to help pattern more knee flexion and less hips shifting back in the lunge or squat. Doubling up the front rack with kettlebells is a great way to also train heavy, and do it safely, as this set up may be challenging with a barbell. Using will also bring out the worst in your front rack stability.. which is good bc it will expose any weaknesses real quick! 🔺Try adding this after your squats, and do 3-4 sets of 10-15 reps per leg. Squat deep, stay controlled, and load up with some weights! In one week’s time, CAN Trustee @jonmaguire_uk will begin his Everest Challenge 2020 - climbing the entire height of Everest in five days. He’ll be doing the first 6000m on the steps in his local park, and then the final 2,848m on Carrock Fell - by climbing it six times!! He’s doing the challenge with @glynutting - Operations Manager at CAN. They will be completing their challenge on September 24th, the day that Doug and Dougal summited in 1975. I get asked this all the time...⁣ ⁣ What’s the difference, and why would you do one over another?⁣ ⁣ Major 🔑 for any exercise: It is only effective and “good” if YOU can perform it WELL and SAFELY👏🏻⁣ ⁣ My preference for clients and newer lifters is the Romanian deadlift, because in practice I see an easier time achieving good and safe form, less flexibility requirements (and most individuals off the street do not have extremely high flexibility), and still targets the booty, hamstring and back in alllll the right ways!!⁣ ⁣ In my anecdotal experience with clients, when I have programmed stiffs for anyone who has not been a lifter for 3+ years with excellent form, I would hear “my back hurts” “I only feel it in my back”, and video submissions would show degrees of spinal flexion in the movements, due to the pull from the ground position and too much hamstring tension for that individual⁣ . The screen shots look so damn similar right?! It’s a subtle difference in appearance, the execution is where we can best distinguish between these two. In an RDL, the starting position is fully standing upright, and you hold the bar throughout, never letting it touch the ground. In a stiff, the starting position is the ground and it’s a dead-stop every single rep. The knees are also less bent, or even locked out, and maintain a more fixed position in a stiff ⁣ I love both of these exercises, for the right individuals😊⁣ ⁣ It’s true you CAN practice stiffs with light DBs and practice a more fixed or locked out knee, however pulling from the ground is an integral piece of a stiff deadlift and for that reason, I believe it is easier to practice RDLs for new lifters who cannot yet utilize a barbell⁣ ⁣ Master the hip hinge and the RDL, and you can always work your way up to attempting more challenging lifts for yourself 🥳⁣ ⁣ Did I miss anything? Quar(Core)antine!! . @ktdabrowski (check out her page to see her portion of the post and follow her for amazing content!) and I wanted to share some band/bodyweight core exercises that you can hopefully implement into your training! . In my opinion, good core training involves the ability to resist movement in all planes (flexion, extension, and rotation). As well as the ability to stabilize the lumbopelvic region. Once those qualities are established, we can then proceed to more explosive, powerful core movements and continue to supplement our core training with heavy main lifts! . My 5 exercises are as follows: . 1. SA anti rotational press (anti rotation) 2. 1/2k sequential down chop (rotation) 3. OH janda sit up (reciprocal inhibition of the hip flexors via engagement of the extensors against the band) 4. Da Vinci plank w/band abduction (anti lateral flexion) 5. Running man plank hold (advanced!) . A lot goes into the form and technique of these so please ask me in the comments! Quit the endless crunches, twists, and traditional sit ups!! Never push past your capacity (capacity = ranges that you train and own). I’ve added a three pound ankle weight to the stick to challenge my strength at end range.   ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ WHY: 1. Improve strength at end range shoulder flexion and extension. 2. Can prevent injury and ease pain at the shoulder joint. 3. Improve efficiency of athletic and every day endeavors that require optimal shoulder function such as overhead press/squat/lunge, swimming, golfing, tennis, calisthenics, reaching for something behind you, etc.   ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ HOW: 1. Lie facedown while gripping the stick wider than shoulder width (you may need to take some time finding how far apart your arms need to be to perform this movement). 2. Irradiate by attempting to pull the stick apart and depress the shoulders away from the ears. 3. Keep the tension as you pull the stick off the floor and into shoulder extension. Keep the rib cage, hips and feet firmly attached to the floor. 4. I built this desk and hutch 15 years ago. The original owner moved to a new home and didn’t have room to take it with her. Her husband asked me to try and sell it for them. I brought it to my shop. Offered it for sale, and as luck would have it, a few months later, the guy who bought it also bought the former desk owners house. So, today, 15 years later, I returned it. Pinching at the front of your ankles with squatting?⁠⠀ Previous ankle injuries?⁠⠀ Losing your balance backward at the bottom of the squat?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Have you worked on your ankle mobility?⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Limited ankle dorsiflexion is on the short list of most common mobility deficits seen in OCR athletes. ⁠⠀ Hell, in all athletes. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Ankle dorsiflexion (DF) = how well the top of your foot moves towards your shin bone. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ This is a mobility issue and not a flexibility issue so we need to:⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ (1) Simplify movement around the joint line.⁠⠀ (2) Increase end range control.⁠⠀ (3) LOAD it! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ We can not out-stretch ourselves out of limited ankle DF!⁠⠀ I repeat, all the calf stretching in the world will not solve your limited ankle DF mobility issue. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The steps are simple: Get to end range motion — contract muscles at end range — add weight! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 1.
