When I was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, I was terrified. I couldn’t even imagine a life with a case of creeping paralysis where I could find any joy at all. I was so afraid that walking would continue to get harder, and eventually I would be in a wheelchair. Now, I have been living with this disease for 8 years, and what I had been so worried about has mostly come to fruition. I can barely walk. Only short distances, and with assistance. Despite the horror of this, I wish I could tell myself (who could barely breathe through the tears and hysteria in the early days), “You are going to be okay. Several years from now you will have adapted to living with this disease and its challenges, you will be a great mother and wife, and you will be genuinely happy”. I am all of those things, despite this disease. I am resilient, and so are you. Das Thema Sportförderung ist ja wieder in aller Munde. Beim Termin habe ich wieder gemerkt, dass vor allem auf Geldgeber Seite alle die gleiche Herausforderung haben: kriegt einer, wollen alle. Die Geldgeber (Sponsoren, wie der Bund/Sporthilfe) geraten in eine Rechtfertigungsschleife. Wieso kriegt der, aber ich nicht? Wo zieht man die Grenze? wie kann eine Sportförderung aussehen, die ALLEN die gleichen Chancen bietet? Genau deswegen bauen wir mit fairplaid Crowdfunding eine Infrastruktur auf, die dem Gesetz der Neutralität unterliegt. Bei uns ist es unerheblich, aus welcher Sportart, welcher Liga, welchem Ort oder von welchem Geschlecht das Projekt kommt. Denn: einzig das Engagement des Athleten, der über seine fairplaid-Kampagne Unterstützer für seinen Sport und sein Projekt gewinnt, entscheidet. und die Bereitschaft der Gesellschaft, das Projekt umgesetzt sehen zu wollen. This photo is me, feeling thrilled but not quite being able to believe that I’m @hayfestival 2018 signing my new @penguinlifebooks book with @helenwearsasize18 & @clemencybh either side of me & both my kids on my lap. I was pretty shocked my hair had turned out so well too. A lap full of children at the signing table, babies in the green room & @clemencybh feeding her son on stage while she expertly chaired a range of discussions - it felt like writing & motherhood were a natural mix. It doesn’t always feel like that. But some of us writers will always happen to be mothers too - it’s vital that a diverse group of us are part of a world that hasn’t been friendly or tolerant of women & mothers in the past. We don’t always want to write about about motherhood though, have to focus on it in interviews or have assumptions made about our talent, time or priorities just because we are combining parenting & writing. But in a community of other writers who are mothers we have a chance to share & build on the opportunities, challenges, particular issues & unique needs that combining the two parts of our lives can bring. We can help each other, learn stuff, cry, laugh, inspire & complain. I’ve found all this in the Mothers Who Write retreats that I’ve been running for a year-offering total rest, a break from the daily burdens of parenting, beautiful views, nurturing support & a small group of inspiring writers to bounce ideas off. We have the best discussions, are more creative than ever & form a lasting community of support. It’s been a revelation. I want to bring that space & community to more writers who happen to be mothers. On my new @motherswhowrite feed, in a regular newsletter & the newsletter’s online community there will be live chats, book recommendations, new writing plus tips, perspectives from the front line of writing/parenting & a whole host of listening ears.
