Today marks 12 years since Lil Mo McCoury came out. This project was a lot of fun. My goal was to give parents a fun bluegrass album they could enjoy with their kids, and I hope that is still the case. The real story here is the music video to Man Gave Names. We shot this during one of the most intense heat waves in Nashville history. It was 108 degrees when we shot this. Sean Penns Chris McCandles is not just a figment of imagination, but one of the many disillusioned young men that discard existence. McCandles makes his way to the wilderness of Alaska, to survive in the solitude of the wild, untamed and untouched by man. Chriss story is recounted through flashbacks, encounters on the road and the lessons he learns on the way to the Alaskan wilderness. Chriss story is both heroic and cautionary, both foolish and brave. While the journey is beautiful and just as important and joyful as reaching the destination, the end was fatal for Chris. It is not until the very end that he realises that all that joy of the journey was not real without company. What he was running from was exactly what he had been looking for. And the truth that happiness is meaningless until you have someone to share it with. Kamal Hassan with his versatility could play the self-important and selfish but complex McCandles to perfection. “Carceral feminism”, coined by Elizabeth Bernstein, refers to a reliance on policing, prosecution, and imprisonment to resolve gendered or sexual violence. (Alex Press. Vox. 2018) “The #MeToo focus remained on individuals – individual women harmed and individual men doing the harm. The broader cultural, institutional and historical structures and context were muted in the background. While it led to a sense of anger and rage, the paths forward offered few possibilities for real change. The call outs became a platform to demand accountability, but with no discussion of what accountability might look like beyond taking people to court and/or people being fired, disinvited, demoted or boycotted. The dialogue stayed within a dominant carceral framework reliant on already existing mechanisms that do not create accountability or lasting change. Carceral feminism assumes that violence is caused by isolated individuals, that individual punishment or banishment is the only and best option available, and that the system is mostly fair. It frames sexual harassment and abuse as ‘aberrant’ behavior, rather than systemic, and so it works to create stronger laws, policies and procedures, alongside increased policing, prosecution and imprisonment. Prison abolition and transformative justice asks us to consider the question of how we move from reacting and managing violence within an oppressive state to transforming it. This requires that, when violence occurs, we gather with others to collectively develop a social and political analysis. I don’t normally look at the Amazon page for my books because reading reviews stresses me out, but I had a little look yesterday and I was absolutely shocked to see my new book, get started with gouache, had over 100 reviews with an average rating of 4.9 out of 5. I wrote this book at a very odd time in my life. I started writing it in January 2019 at the same time as my beloved Grandpa was diagnosed with leukaemia, and the deadline for the final hand in of the manuscript was on day before his funeral. In those four months I spent all my time either working on this book or visiting him in hospital and spending time with my family. By the time I had finished this book I had completely lost perspective, and I couldn’t even tell it what I had done was any good. It means so so much to me to see other people say that it is a good book. It’s a nice reminder and that you can do good work in hard times. We are two months out from YOU KNOW I’M NO GOOD! This book stemmed from an incident that happened while I was teaching freshman English and it’s been percolating in my head since—I kid you not—2007. Thirteen years. It’s about a girl who is taken from bed in the middle of the night and sent to a therapeutic boarding school for “troubled teens” (I use quotes here because that label makes me cringe). The title is taken from the #amywinehouse song of the same name. Amy is one of my heroes. And while she is almost as famous for her “troubles” as she is for her artistic genius, just FYI she was sober when she wrote most of her Back To Black album. I haven’t nailed down my elevator pitch (bc who wants to ride an elevator in a pandemic anyway) so let me boil the book down by paraphrasing Amy: no one should ever have to battle blind, and nothing ever has to be a fate resigned. 🖤 I hope I got this book right, and I hope it reaches people who need it. This past weekend we celebrated my baby sister with a bachelorette weekend in the woods. I would love to add styling & designing bachelorette parties to my resume so I thought I’d share all the fun things I came up with for you guys! • • • I created a bunch of fun things to go along with the theme I designed; Wedstock in the Woods! 51 years ago on this very same weekend Woodstock was underway. I thought it would be a fun sentimental piece to recreate the original Woodstock poster with a twist for my sister! Today is #NationalComicBookDay! Activist and U.S. Congressman Rep. John Lewis, who passed away earlier this year, was an avid comic book reader, and claimed that comic books like this one from our collection inspired him to participate in the Civil Rights movement. The book Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story recounts in comic book fashion the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956, a response to Montgomery, Alabamas racial segregation in the public transit system. The cover depicts Martin Luther King, Jr., who is featured inside along with Rosa Parks. My entry for this week’s AMARANTH #fjnine with host @flots_n_jets and guest judge @studiofourcorners ... I had to look this one up, to make sure I had the right color in mind. Named after the flower of the amaranth plant, it’s described as magenta with some red added to it. An interesting factoid: The name amaranth comes from the Greek “a” (not) + “marainean” (to waste away), i.e., a flower believed to grow on Mount Olympus which never died. Obstructing the ability to vote is a federal crime. #DontDefundUSPS #saveusps #savethepostoffice #bidenharris2020 #paulettespalette #coloredpencildrawing To anyone who feels unsafe about voting in person but now also fears steps are being taken to undermine and make USPS unable to timely deliver ballots, there is a way around it: 1) Request a mail-in ballot. 2) Do not mail it. 3) Google your supervisor of elections to see where you can drop off your mail-in ballot. It’s usually not the polling place. All states allow this! Here’s what you’re accomplishing by doing this: 1) You’re not relying on USPS to get your ballot in on time so no matter what Trump and his people to do to undermine USPS, you still get your ballot in on time. 2) You don’t have to worry about standing in long lines or risking infection; you’re just dropping it off. 3) You still exercised your right to vote and made your voice heard! Also, when you drop it off, find out if/how to track it online to make sure it’s verified.
