Although we wrapped on the 2019-2020 cold-stun season two weeks ago, we are continuing to provide medical treatment for sick and injured sea turtles year-round. Our Animal Health and Rescue teams have just admitted two turtles for rehabilitative care! Tulum, a mature Kemp’s ridley, was rescued off the coast of Delaware a few weeks ago. Tulum is currently being treated for symptoms of lethargy and positive buoyancy, which impacts a turtle’s ability to dive and swim. The prehistoric crocodile 🐊 Brutus a formidable executioner that clamps down on its pray with shier power, this prominent killer crocodile is believed to be around 80 years old and still growing and crocodiles are biologically immortal. A noticeable feature of the crocodile is that it has a front leg missing which he is believed to have lost during a vicious encounter with a shark 🦈 ( it makes me question, just how big was the shark to rival Brutus). Brutus is one of the many saltwater crocodiles living in the Northern Territory, tourists are often overawed by the giant creatures size, the beast is measured at 5.5 meeters. - @hype_asia on Instagram

Last night Cyler and I went out to try and see if we could catch and kill a 7-8 foot gator to fill our first tag. On the way there we agreed that we both wanted to be home no later than 10:30. We had no idea that we were going to be in a hour long fight with this 12 foot dinosaur that weighed 619 lbs. We had to drag him across the lake because we couldn’t get him in the boat. Where I would be now if not for Covid! I can’t wait for travel restrictions to end and for it to be safe to travel again, I miss Costa Rica so much!! Who would want to join me on my next trip down to see this guy?? This was last year, working on stationing and training with Paco the rescue American crocodile at the @greentiquewildliferefuge.cr @sicomonoresort Paco came from another facility and on one hand is very used to people, but on the other hand he is was I call eye shy, where he flinches and closes his eyes any time any movement is made towards his head area at all, even with the food. This is likely a result of someone in his past hitting him in the face with sticks repeatedly. Although they’re incredibly tough animals and any actual injury is highly unlikely, it’s not necessary to hit them at all to train them!! A lot of facilities do this unfortunately, it’s really common among many professionals, but my experience has taught me it is unnecessary and I have no problem training croc’s and gators without hitting them. I use a stick to block and touch the animal in specific spots and block attacks, but don’t need to hit them at all. Proper knowledge and experience go a long way and make a much better experience for the person and the animal! He has a safe home at @greentiquewildliferefuge.cr . FWC biologists, law enforcement and partners recently rescued a manatee entangled in fishing line in Key Largo. The 10 foot, 1100-pound female had monofilament fishing line entangled around both of her flippers. Biologists were able to successfully remove the line from the left flipper in the field, but the animal needed surgery to remove the deeply embedded line in the right flipper, so the manatee was transferred to SeaWorld Orlando. Upon recovery the manatee will be released back into the waters surrounding Key Largo. Please do your part to prevent entanglements, carry a container with a lid to store trash or used fishing line (e.g., tennis ball canister or coffee can) and recycle all monofilament fishing line into a monofilament recycling bin.
