#MorningBrew: The Negro Leagues are getting the kind of recognition they deserve this Sunday. All Major League clubs will celebrate the centennial of the founding of the Negro National League -- the first structured Negro League that lasted for an extended period -- with all players, managers, coaches, and umpires wearing a Negro Leagues 100th anniversary logo patch on their uniforms during Sunday’s games. The logo, a derivative of the official logo created by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, also will be featured on base jewels and lineup cards. The festivities, originally slated for June 27 but postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, will cap what has become a summer-long celebration of the league and its players, 100 years after the league’s founding. Bob Kendrick, who is the president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, believes the big celebration would not have happened without Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, who made a joint donation of $1 million to the museum in February. “We are really excited about Sunday,” Kendrick said. “Even though it’s not the way that we had envisioned it, with fans being in the ballpark and creating that groundswell of energy in and around this celebration, we have one of the most significant platforms ever to count the richness of the history of the Negro Leagues. This great museum, as the caretaker of that history, is something we all take great pride in.” Words by: Bill Ladson MLB.com: https://bit.ly/NegroLeagueCelebration StaynThirsty Coop - @laketahoetelevision on Instagram

Definitely a sad day. I can only imagine how hard its been on his family. I started working with Troy (along with many others) when he recorded his first album on FAMU campus back in the 90s. I worked with and was able to connect with many talented musicians, singers, songwriters, producers, and more. Through working with him, I was afforded the opportunity to not only be a musician, but a songwriter as well. Through him, I was given the opportunity to tour Europe and the US for several years as well as record and perform with him, Rev. Milton Biggham, the GA Mass Choir, Y.F.C., and several other national gospel artists. If youve followed me over the years, you know I dont work in this field anymore due to a change in my personal views, but I give credit where its due and appreciate Troy for giving me the opportunity to share my musical talents on a much larger platform. My condolences to Emily, the children, and the rest of the family. I can only imagine how hard the loss is. I sincerely hope you all are able to find peace through this hard time. - @musicmandre on Instagram

JOHN KENNEDY ~ 100 yr Anniversary of the Negro League Baseball. I had the wonderful opportunity of playing baseball with Mr. Kennedy in a Mens Over-30 Rec league in the 1990s. He was twice the age of any of us there and he could always hit and get on base. Better still, he made stealing second (and third!!) look way too easy - his timing was impeccable. He was talented, friendly and fun-loving. Tonight i tip my cap to Johnny Kennedy and the Negro Leagues! John Irvin Kennedy (October 12, 1926 – April 27, 1998) was an American professional baseball shortstop. He signed as a free agent with the New York Giants in Major League Baseball (MLB) before the 1953 season, but was released prior to the 1954 season. Kennedy caught on with the Birmingham Black Barons, and later the Kansas City Monarchs, both of the Negro American League. Near the end of the 1956 season, with Kennedy having led the NAL batting race for most of the year, the Monarchs sold his contract to the Philadelphia Phillies. Kennedy made his big league debut in April 1957 becoming the first black player in Phillies history. This is surreal to me......today @mlb is recognizing Jackie Robinson Day which is normally April 15th. The man who brought Jackie to life for most of us in the 21st century, Chadwick Boseman, passes away on the day Jackie’s being honored 😑😞 Rest in Paradise King’s and I hope you’re getting in a game of strikeout at heaven’s gates and sending down that fighting spirit! Thank You Jackie! Thank you Chadwick! ⚾️🕊🙏🏾 - @jrollins11 on Instagram

~•~ The Double Js~•~ est. 1995 Many of my friends know that I am the last of seven children in my family. Today Id like to celebrate my partner since birth, a bold courageous woman of God, an invested mother, a profound artist and musician, a force for good, a supershero like no other and one overall funny gyal... Id like to send praises to my big sis Josette! Jo lives with integrity, fortitude, and determination especially when the cameras are off, and when there may not be any immediate personal gain for herself. It seems like yesterday when our Father/manager named our duo act. I salute you Jo! Shall we shuffle onward?! - @josephcwiggan on Instagram

Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin star in Concrete Cowboy, which premiered at @TIFF_NET last week. The father-son drama offers a different take on the American Western, as it follows a group of Black cowboys in Philadelphia. It’s based on the novel “Ghetto Cowboy” by Greg Neri.
