We couldn’t help but travel back in time when looking at this photo of our Kimpton Clocktower, surrounded by a bygone era✨ Did you know that our building was designed by the famous Alfred Waterhouse and built 1891–1895? Alfred sadly passed away in 1905 and the reigns were handed over to his son Paul to complete - it was him who added the 217ft clocktower in 1910–1912. This stunning building is seeped in Mancunian history - surviving two world wars and standing tall over the city through historical moments including Manchester’s very own Emmeline Pankhurst’s Suffragette movement. A double bill for our Historians in Residence tonight First up is Cathy Scuffil at 5 with her talk Water water everywhere. The single biggest difficulty encountered by the Rathmines Township was in obtaining an adequate and suitable water supply for the thirsty citizens of the ever expanding Township. This talk looks at one initiative by the Township to obtain a supply from the Grand Canal in the Gallenstown area of Ballyfermot, and highlights the evidence of these works still in the area, hiding daily in plain sight. Then at 7 is Mary Muldowney with Joe Moore and the Sunday Journal: The Insurance Man who wanted to run a newspaper. In July 1980, the Sunday Journal newspaper was in danger of closing down because of its financial difficulties when Joe Moore stepped in as the new backer. At the time, he was head of the PMPA (Private Motorists Protection Association) and had no experience of the newspaper business. This talk will outline Moore’s acquisition of the Sunday Journal; the editorial policy he imposed, changing it from a ‘farming paper’ to a general tabloid with a focus on motoring and his business and political dealings before the paper closed down completely in June 1982. On this day in 1942, the Rohwer Concentration Camp was opened in Arkansas. On this site, approximately 8,475 Japanese Americans would be incarcerated in the Deep South. That being said, the incarcerees would be forced to face the harsh weather that comes with being imprisoned in a swamp. It was due to these conditions that it was not unheard of for the camp to flood. Aside from avoiding the swarms of mosquitos, the incarcerees of Rohwer found ways to keep themselves occupied. For example, 442nd trainees from Camp Shelby would often visit for baseball games with the teams in Rohwer. Todays image depicts a flooded block at Rowher Concentration Camp. Why was Napoléon III so keen to renovate Paris in the 19th century? For starters, the center of the city was unhealthy and overcrowded. In working class neighborhoods like the Quartier des Arcis in the 3rd arrondissement, there was 1 inhabitant for every 3 square meters. This same neighborhood is depicted in this iconic c. 1853 photograph by Charles Marville. Since few of his images depict actual people, they offer a nostalgic view of pre-Haussmann Paris, without its social problems. The narrow street shown here was later destroyed to make way for an extension to Rue Rivoli.
