As we enter the month of June in South Africa, we remember and honour the youth of South Africa who died for our freedom. Annually, WCTA has held grassroots tournaments to honour those who paved the way and gave their lives for a democratic South Africa. These are uncertain times we live in but one thing we are certain of...WCTA has never ever forgotten that we play our sport in a democratic society because it was hard fought for. Never forget. #wcta #grassroots #🔴⚪🔵 #islandersahoo - @western_cape_touch on Instagram

#josephinebaker #dancer #singer #icon #bananadance In 1925 she went to Paris to dance at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in La Revue Nègre and introduced her danse sauvage to France. She went on to become one of the most popular music-hall entertainers in France and achieved star billing at the Folies-Bergère, where she created a sensation by dancing seminude in a G-string ornamented with bananas. - @arabellaboopboopadoop on Instagram

On #NationalDanceDay, dance like Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson and his wife Elaine! African American photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris captured this image of Bojangles and his new wife celebrating their new marriage. For over 40 years, Teenie documented the events and daily life of African Americans living in the Hill District for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the most influential minority newspapers during the mid-20th century. . By the 1920s, Pittsburgh was a mecca for entertainers and musicians who toured the country. Many Jazz greats passed through Pittsburgh or called the city home; and, as a result, the intersection of Wylie Avenue and Fullerton Street in the Hill District became known as the Crossroads of the World. There were countless clubs and dance halls in the Hill District where people came to see Jazz giants such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne and Billy Eckstine. Clubs like the Hurricane and the Crawford Grill were busy every night and Teenie was there to take in the sights and sounds, capturing the activities of a nightlife that rivaled that of Harlem. . “Dance is not an exercise. Dance is an art.” Alicia Alonso (1920-2019) was a Cuban ballet dancer who demonstrated extraordinary range & passion throughout her long career. Though perhaps best known for her dynamic portrayals of principal roles, especially “Giselle,” her leadership & lasting contributions to the dance community—even after significant vision loss—further elevated her legacy. Alonso was born in Havana, Cuba to parents Antonio Martínez & Ernestina Hoya, & was the youngest of four siblings. She studied dance as a child, but was not encouraged to pursue a professional career until she moved to New York in 1937 with her husband, Fernando. In New York, she appeared in several dance works including the Broadway musicals “Great Lady” (1938) & “Stars in Your Eyes.” (1939) She attended The School of American Ballet (@sab_nyc) & joined the Ballet Theatre (later renamed American Ballet Theatre) as a founding member in 1940. In 1942, after several surgeries for a detached retina, while on bedrest her teachers coached her through the steps of “Giselle” as she rehearsed mentally with her fingers. Later in her career, with further loss of her vision, she used the glare of the stage lights to guide her. She returned to Havana in 1948 & founded Ballet Alicia Alonso, later renamed the National Ballet of Cuba (@balletnacionaldecubaoficial). The company received wide acclaim, appearing in international tours & dance festivals. Although she continued to travel the world for performances with @abtofficial, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, & more, her passion for engaging with Cuba’s rich cultural community remained central. #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth 📸 Alicia Alonso in “Giselle.” Photo by Walter E.
