More progress on the 6 axis arm Ive been working on. Controlled with #Mantis #motioncontrol and built from #3dprinted parts, some aluminum, and stepper motors. Found a few points that will need to be tweaked to reduce backlash but for a first few moves Im pretty happy. Not bad for a fraction of the price of a Kira or Bolt plus a lot of new skills learned through this project. We return this Saturday to Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master from 2012, with cinematography by Mihai Mălaimare Jr. and, in particular, the use of 65mm film. Today we’re looking at the lighting in the jail scene. Dodd and Freddy have just been arrested and brought to the jail cells to await arraignment, and Freddy is having a difficult time coping with unfolding events. From being arrested, to his anger at the police for arresting Dodd, and his anger at Dodd for being arrested, the scene centers around anger and the absence of control. The cells were in the San Pedro courthouse. The space was small – a hallway, some cells, and all lighting needed to be installed. In the hallway were Par 64 Parcans, fitted with 1000W bulbs. Check out the hallway scene above for how this light translated to 65mm film vs the raw images closer to what the eye might see when looking at the lighting set up. Anderson chose to shoot The Master on 65mm film, with lenses needing T-stops of 4 and 5.6, so huge amounts of light were needed for every shot. The averaged footcandles as a base for this lighting set up is about 100fc. Inside the cells, Chimera Pancakes were used overhead, also with 1000W bulbs, while some Arri 750 open faces with chimeras were used as backlights. Today I had to sit down and explain to my 2.5 year-old daughter what an explosion is! Can you imagine? This is the ceiling that collapsed over our head. We were crushed under it for half an hour. Broke my back. But I’m grateful. The next pictures are what’s left of our office. My dad’s desk, my teams’s space, my mom’s blood. Luckily no one had serious injuries. We first heard what sounded like air strikes, and as I folded myself on my daughter to protect her, the second explosion happened and we felt a strong whooshing of wind, and finally the weight crashing down on my back. 20 minutes of trying to figure out how to claw my way out, with my daughter crying of fear. Feeling like in a movie where these things only happen to others. Until finally 2 parking attendants came to our rescue. Results: a traumatized child and my broken back. Yet feeling grateful because she’s getting back to normal, and I’m on bedrest. A completely shattered office, a somewhat damaged home, yet our families are safe lhamdella 🙏 So thank you to all that have called, messaged, and just kept us in their thoughts. As we were working at a scale lighting food puppets we had the opportunity to tweak and try out many lighting setups, without a great deal of effort. #remember2018 We started April working with the dolly mini Felix from @cinetel_ in a TV show called Comedy Central News. We also used the same crane in a teaser for a feature film called Tres años. This is the moment it hit me. The moment it all just seemed so real. ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ 📻 Without any live, in person gigs scheduled in the near future, this week I returned to the airwaves, the Internet airwaves that is. I am grateful for the opportunity given to me by Lee Lowery and hist TTT Radio Network to play 90 minutes of music for, at the very least, a virtual audience. Because of the entire entertainment and event industry vanishing temporarily, I missed an opportunity to play in Las Vegas. And I started thinking of the time I played in Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Vancouver and all around the amazing venues in San Diego. 😞 But here I was, in my garage. A place Ive spent countless hours building equipment, troubleshooting, learning and practicing to be a better DJ. Ive DJd here before, but never like this. My biggest audiences were my dogs laying on the floor and my family listening inside the house. This time was for real, but in a much different way. The audience, mostly my friends; texting me in real-time words of encouragement, praise and even a few requests. I was playing music from the 90s, a time I hold dear because those were my formative years, my high school and college years. A time (relatively speaking) of little responsibility and a carefree attitude. I sat there, while Mazzy Star played, remembering when I played that same song 25 years ago, in a tiny, only-room-for two-people, college radio studio; my whole life ahead of me. And I had to wipe away a tear. 😥 Was I right back at the beginning? In a way, yes. Life, for now, is right back to where it was when I was playing 90s music in the 90s. Unsure. Uncertainty. I always feel when our hands are forced, we have two choices. Do our best work, or fail. I think this is that time. Its time to choose to flourish or fold. Yes, it sucks right now. But maybe years from now, well look back and this will be the moment that created the path we were destined for anyway.
