You’re heard the words insulin resistance a ton of times. You may not know EXACTLY what it means … just it’s not a good thing. 😩⠀ ⠀ In a nutshell, when you eat a meal (that includes carbs and protein to some degree), your blood sugar rises. In attempts to lower the blood sugar and get it into your cells, your pancreas makes insulin. The insulin is able to “open” the door to the cell and let the insulin in … so your blood sugar is low and normal. But with PCOS, there’s believed to be a genetic defect in the cell “door” . It doesn’t open, so your body has to crank a ton of insulin to open the door. The sugar finally gets in, so your blood sugar goes back to normal. But that high level of insulin wreaks havoc with PCOS and can cause:⠀ ⠀ ➡️Carb cravings⠀ ➡️Weight gain⠀ ➡️Inflammation ➡️Increased ovarian production of androgens (hello testosterone)⠀ ➡️Increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes ➡️Decreased SHBG (so this leaves more free testosterone available to cause symptoms) ⠀ ➡️Increased LH from pituitary gland in brain ⠀ ➡️Increased risk of miscarriage ⠀ ➡️Increased mood disorders and more!⠀ ⠀ Most women with PCOS have degree of IR - but it range can vary from mild to severe. This is the time we need you and your support the most. @bp.surfs suffered a blast injury this morning when she was pumping up a board with an industrial compressor before our surf camp. She was thrown backwards by the blast and hit her head on the ground. She has 7 stitches in the back of her head, a concussion, and a carpel fracture from where the compressor hose hit her hand. She was driven to Salida Hospital from BV in an ambulance where the accident happened. After a CT scan and X-rays in Salida they determined she needed to be flown to St. Anthony’s in Denver so she could be assessed by a neurologist. She has air in her skull and brain hemorrhaging from the blast injury. As you all know medical transport and treatments are extremely expensive. The best thing for Brittany from here on out is to ONLY have to worry about HEALING. We can all make sure of this by donating! The funds raised will be used to alleviate Brittanys financial burden in order to best allow her to concentrate on getting better and overcome her injuries. PLEASE DONATE, SHARE, GET SUPPORT! Superheroes Wear Masks: Part 2 Here we show a woman who developed angioedema from her mask. Yikes!💥 Where are your masks coming from? Are they homemade or ordered from the internet? How does your skin feel after wearing a face covering all day? Masks come in all varieties of colors, designs, and materials. Some of these materials are intentional, like tightly woven fibers to create an intricate web of particle filtration. On the otherhand, some masks may carry unwanted materials. This can include: 🔺Formaldehyde 🔺Dibromodicyanobutane 🔺Quanternium-15 These chemicals can produce allergic reactions. Allergic contact dermatitis can occur with redness, irritation, acne, itching, and even blisters in the area of the skin that has come into contact with the skin. Hives, or urticara, can occur as itchy red spots or patches. This reaction can even cause respiratory symptoms, which may need urgent medical attention. A rare reaction to contact with a mask that we have seen in our practice is angioedema, or a sudden swelling of the lips and mouth. As you can see, this swelling went from bad to worse. Angioedema is dangerous because it can spread down into the oropharynx and risk closure of the airway if left untreated. Luckily, this woman improved after urgent treatment with steroids. These reactive chemicals do not appear on any ingredient list or product description of masks. However, certain masks can carry these chemicals as a byproduct of their manufacturing. Therefore, it is important to ensure that yours come from a reputable source. When it comes to wearing homemade cloth masks, people can react to the cloth itself or even the detergent or fabric softener that was used to wash the mask. You may have to try out different kinds of masks to find the one that best fits your superhero costume. Our response to @asuprescrow’s 25 actions to address racism: We, the Multicultural Solidarity Coalition, are encouraged by the list of 25 actions you plan to take to address systemic racism at ASU. We are pleased to see pieces of our own proposal reflected in this list, such as the need for a multicultural center and the creation of community fellowships for graduate students. It is also heartening to see what appears to be a deep commitment to the hiring and retention of underrepresented faculty and graduate students from marginalized communities, which is another important piece of our proposal. While we are thankful to see these pieces of our proposal being implemented, we agree with you that “this list of actions will be inadequate by itself.” For these pieces of our proposal to be realized in a way that is true to our intentions and goals, it is necessary for the Multicultural Solidarity Coalition (as the author of these pieces) to be part of the various working groups addressing these points. We look forward to working together with you, the Council of Coalitions, and the Black African Coalition. We are especially motivated to work on some of the other items that also made it to your action list. In fact, they are a source of grave concern to all of us. Points 22 and 25 are actions that are contrary to the spirit and intent of our proposal. We believe that they will likely put Black and other marginalized students at greater risk. Specifically, inviting the Department of Homeland Security into the ASU community negates the intent and spirit of our request to become a sanctuary university. DHS houses ICE and CBP, which are both agencies that put our undocumented students at risk of harassment and deportation. We do not agree that inviting DHS to collaborate with ASU is a step toward greater racial equality in the U.S. In fact we see it as further violence against Black and Brown students. Purpose: This study aimed to determine how varying protein intakes, including a new tracer-derived safe intake, alter whole body protein metabolism and exercise performance during training. Methods: Using a double-blind randomized crossover design, 10 male endurance-trained runners (age, 32 ± 8 yr; V˙O2peak, 65.9 ± 7.9 mL O2·kg·min) performed three trials consisting of 4 d of controlled training (20, 5, 10, and 20 km·d, respectively) while consuming diets providing 0.94 (LOW), 1.20 (MOD), and 1.83 (HIGH) g protein·kg·d. Whole body protein synthesis, breakdown, and net balance were determined by oral [N]glycine on the first and last day of the 4-d controlled training period, whereas exercise performance was determined from maximum voluntary isometric contraction, 5-km time trial, and countermovement jump impulse (IMP) and peak force before and immediately after the 4-d intervention. Results: Synthesis and breakdown were not affected by protein intake, whereas net balance showed a dose-response (HIGH MOD LOW, P 0.05) with only HIGH being in positive balance (P 0.05). There was a trend (P = 0.06) toward an interaction in 5-km Time Trial with HIGH having a moderate effect over LOW (effect size = 0.57) and small effect over MOD (effect size = 0.26). IMP decreased with time (P 0.01) with no effect of protein (P = 0.56). There was no effect of protein intake (P ≥ 0.06) on maximum voluntary isometric contraction, IMP, or peak force performance. Positive Temporal Raphe Sign came up in an article I was reading and I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS. It had me shook for sure. Listening to this week’s The 20/20 Podcast with @harbirsian.od interviewing @2020glance founder Dr. Jackie Garlich, she also shares that about 6 years after graduation she was shook about her optometric knowledge when corneal hysteresis began showing up as a common term in literature - something that wasn’t part of her optometric lexicon or training (or mine either). Well today that same thing happened to me. I did some research and positive temporal raphe sign is all over the glaucoma literature since 2018 and not only obvious to detect on GCC scan maps on your OCT, but incredibly useful in daily practice. It can differentiate glaucoma optic neuropathy (they will have it) versus other causes of optic neuropathy (they won’t). In a recent 2020 study published in American Journal of Ophthalmology, they also found that a positive temporal raphe sign is predictive of which elderly patients with large/suspicious cupping will go on to develop normal tension glaucoma. Over 94% of patients with this sign went on to convert to NTG over a roughly 5 year period in this study, compared to only 5% of patients without this sign went on to develop NTG. As artists we have various platforms and ways to present our work but lack initiatives -individual or collective- opening conversations about the struggles we face, the random, boring or ugly bits of our day to day lives. Our practice is a job, it is competitive, aggressive, sometimes unfair, most of the time lonely, and always scary. Today I would like to address the topic of failure and rejection, something we are all familiar with, and often fear. As mentioned above we are in a highly competitive field and the way we represent ourselves matters. We share our success and congratulate our peers on their accomplishments even when it sometimes bring us back to our own lack of success, or at least in the way we envision it. I have made a list of all the opportunities I applied to in the past 12 months, so from last September. Here I talk about the opportunities I went after, not the opportunities I have been given, or that emerged from new encounters. I mean me putting myself out there, searching for open calls, spending time writing motivational letters, formatting files, selecting images, and -too often- paying fees to apply. Between September 2019 and now I applied to 36 open calls. Out of these 36 my work was selected five times and shortlisted four. Out of these four I didn’t make the final cut once. This represents a 75% percentage of rejection for 14% of success. What appears in my news and my resume is the tip of the iceberg of hours and hours of draining submission process, self-doubt, deception, frustration, and even sometimes a little bit of anger. Our field is hard, we are hard on each other (that’s what she said) but most of the time we are really hard on ourselves. We need more discussions about the way we work, how it may impact our mental health, how much we’re paid, our financial and social status, inequalities, plagiarism, elitism, nepotism just to name a few. How come we care and are vocal about so many things but when it comes to our industry we are awfully quiet and ridiculous taboos remain in place? Show more vulnerability. Failure means growth.
