KNP LION PRIDE USED TO CARS, BE CAUTIOUS The Kruger National Park (KNP) Management has received reports of a pride of lions north of Satara which are showing abnormal behaviour around vehicles such as the biting of tyres. Visitors who come across lions displaying such behaviour should ensure that their windows remain closed and those on Open Safari Vehicles should ensure that that they remain silent and keep all arms, heads etc. within the structure of the vehicle. Appealing to the public, the KNP Managing Executive, Glenn Phillips said “We have received information from various tourists who have witnessed this behaviour. We would like to appeal to the open safari vehicle operators specifically to be on the look-out as the behaviour of the pride is of concern and might pose danger to occupants”. Veterinary Wildlife Services will be collaring a member of this pride to monitor movements and will also mark all members of the pride to allow for identification. Guests who might have taken photos/video or have feedback on the pride are encouraged to share or post these on our social media platforms; so that management are in a position to try to identify whether it is only specific member of the pride or whether the entire pride has developed this behaviour. Guests are requested to photograph the lions in such a way to capture branding marks or ear notches. “We also request visitors not to get too close to any animals for footage at a sighting, or refrain from placing any items on the vehicle exterior or tyres which might attract and encourage animals to approach the vehicle”; concluded Phillips. Wildlife Isn’t a Nuisance … Human Expansion and Development is What’s Plaguing Our Planet. The expansion of human populations has resulted in the destruction of natural habitats, leaving wild animals with fewer places to live. According to the World Wildlife Fund, habitat loss is the largest threat to wild animals. 17 million hectares of tropical forest is lost every year, and about half of our original forests have already disappeared. Agriculture is responsible for the majority of deforestation and forest degradation, leaving behind a devastating loss of biodiversity that reduces the forest’s ability to produce a healthy ecosystem that’s able to support wildlife. Commercial development is another cause of habitat destruction. Forests, wetlands, and prairies that once provided a home for wildlife have been removed to make way for housing, commercial buildings, shopping centers, roads, and parking lots. All of this destruction is forcing animals into communities, increasing interactions between animals and humans, and leading to a conflict that poses a danger for both. When animals lose not only their habitat but also the prey that serves as a food source, they find themselves needing to turn to other sources. As a result, we see an increase in animals getting into garbage, destroying gardens and crops, and attacking pets or livestock. Ending deforestation is our best chance to conserve wildlife. It is also one of the quickest, most cost effective ways to slow the effects of climate change, save forests, animals and planet. His anxiety bothered his captors, who broke his legs to prevent him from moving or running away while posing for pictures with holidaymakers. According to the veterinarians that found him close to death, he went through an ocean of pain as he were beaten and tortured. Why Trophy Hunting Does NOT Help Conservation Advocates of trophy hunting love to call themselves conservationists and always make the claim the trophy hunting helps wildlife by bringing much needed funds to impoverished communities, distributing bush meat, and controlling wildlife populations. The claims are highly misleading, and also they are just bullshit. Sorry. If you love animals you don’t shoot them for sport. But let’s examine why it’s bullshit: 1. Wildlife populations up for trophy hunting are not in imbalance with the natural world, and the need to regulate them through culling or hunting is due to human encroachment on habitat 2. Trophy hunting is not a population management tool. We are talking about killing a small number of highly desirable animals, thus disrupting the population and gene pool. 3. Less than 5% of revenue from trophy hunts goes to local communities on average. The vast majority of their income goes to government agencies, outfitters and individuals located in national capitals and overseas. See slide 3. 4. Trophy hunting has been in practice for decades, with conservation claims dating as far back as the 1920’s. (The only exception of Kenya which outright banned trophy hunting in 1977.) If trophy hunting has already been helping conservation for decades, why are wildlife populations still plummeting? Lion trophy hunting is hardly new, and yet with all of these hunts “helping” lion conservation, wild lion populations steadily decline. In fact, The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which monitors animal populations, reports that the number of lions in five populations in Tanzania fell by two-thirds from 1993 to 2014. This Red Fox is in care at our wildlife hospital and being treated for sarcoptic mange. Look how improved she looks, even after just one week in care! Mange is caused by sarcoptic mites and causes extreme irritation, which often leads to hair loss. Severe infestations commonly cause emaciation and dehydration as the animal is so desperately itchy, that they become unthrifty and not able to hunt at a self-sustaining level. Many patients admitted with mange also have secondary skin infections or lesions. It’s notoriously challenging to get these patients in for care - they don’t know we’re trying to help them, so safely capturing them is difficult. Luckily, a caring resident was able to safely live-trap this individual to get them into us for care. Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong. Unfortunately African Wild Dogs need very large home ranges, and also need to eat on a daily basis - this does mean that most reserves simply cant ( or wont) accommodate them.
