#SparkJoyReadathon - A book written by a POC author . . Back in June, I placed a hold on Hood Feminism through Libby after seeing so many rave reviews. And three months later, I finally had the chance to read this brilliant book! Mikki Kendall does a fantastic job laying out all of the ways mainstream feminism fails to prioritize certain issues as feminist issues, like food insecurity, healthcare, housing, education, gun violence, and more. And the ways that white feminists drown out Black and Brown voices in the conversations that do take place. I love that she was inclusive of people with disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community, communities that mainstream feminism rarely focus on when fighting for equality and equity. This is a must-read for those who, like me, have always claimed to be a feminist but need to be more aware of the pressing issues outside the scope our of privilege. . . Many of you may not know this but I play the flute! It’s an instrument that opened many doors for me in the music world. I call it my past life;) although I document for a living, I’ll never let go of my passion and love for notes on a page. I recently got my flutes out and played and played. It was a reminder of a talent I have long since let go but how it comes back so fervently (although I’m a bit rusty now). Pictured here is a flute that I played in high school. It’s so beautiful and special to me but sits in the back of a closet collecting dust. Now, after some styling and some florals (thanks @mulberryandmoss) and the creative push (thanks @pirouettepapercompany) I have a series of images from a most beloved piece of my past. Be grateful It sounds so easy. And for some it might be. For some not so much. But when you start with training yourself to be more grateful, it will become easier and easier. Writing down where you are grateful for every morning, evening or both could be a good practice. I, myself am not very good in writing it down every day. But nowadays I can feel the sensation of gratefulness coming up. And then stand still for a moment to let it come in and enjoy it. Eu mesma não sou uma leitora assídua do gênero romance, por exemplo, mas de vez em quando me deparo com uns que possuem uma carga emocional que vão além de um mero romance “água com açúcar”. Este da foto, por exemplo, é “Céu sem estrelas”, da @irisfigueiredo, e eu senti uma conexão muito grande com a protagonista Cecília, todos os seus anseios; inseguranças; muitas vezes derrotas... ela é uma personagem que não é “fácil”, justamente porque a vida dela também não é. E esse é o ponto alto dessa história pra mim, que vai além de um livro “de romance”, apesar de também ter isso. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📖 “Apoiar alguém exige trabalho. happy tuesday! school has been so stressful but we’re making it work 🥺 as you can tell I’m not posting as much as I used to bc finding time to put thought into my posts is hard bc I spends hour on classwork. and the times I do make free, I spend it hanging out with people or going out. I like to enjoy the moment so I try to stay off of my phone while going out with people. my thing is the stuff on your phone can be done later but the things you’re doing in the moment can’t. this means you should put your full focus into what’s happening in your real life rather than liking posts on Instagram or watching stories on Snapchat. 🤠 take some time off of your phone because it doesn’t mean much in your life as a whole compared to what you’re physically doing. I read an article about how when you visit a destination, you should be experiencing it through your eyes rather than through your phone screen bc you’re taking a photo of it. you’re at the destination for a reason, to see it in person, so make sure you see it with your own eyes instead taking up that valuable time by taking photos you will rarely look back at. ☺️ I hope that makes a lot of sense, I’m writing this while walking back to my room (lowkey not good but you gotta make every time productive 🤣) - @naturally.stacey on Instagram

ANNOTATING •FIRST AID• USMLE STEP 1 I am dropping a whole YouTube video on this so go check it out!! First, I will say I had no idea how to annotate First Aid during M1... I was honestly too scared to write in it so I didn’t even use it as a resource much. I WISH I HAD USED IT AS AN M1! Now, I use first aid alongside my classes, boards & beyond, uworld, Rx, and all my other resources! First aid is that ‘gold standard’ book where it organizes most everything you need to know and allows you to take notes to reference all in ONE PLACE! To annotate first aid, I use @paper_mate flair medium colorful pens linked on my Amazon store, pilot G-2 .05 ball point pens, highlighters, tabs, and sticky notes. Even if you aren’t a big “paper” fan, I think having a reference resource is super valuable and taking notes in it is important because it doesn’t have everything and rather than just reading your incorrect uworld answers, you should annotate them into your book so you actually can see them again! My highlighting system: 🟨 - disorder name 🟦 - histology/pathology finding 🟪 - drug MOA 🟧 - clinical finding 🟥 - gene/enzyme name 🟩 - lab value Everyone does this differently but I decided to only highlight things that show up on step questions... the “high yield” pieces if you will! I seriously do not highlight anything else. If I want something to pop I may underline with my paper mate pens but usually I only use them to draw in extra diagrams or information I may need to look back on. I use my sticky notes to write-in information I learn from my lectures related to the topic! I do this so I can know what came from a step resource (written directly into FA) vs what came from my professors (added to FA in a sticky note.) I use tabs on my book to indicate which unit I learned the information in. For example, I put green tags on the pages that relate to my Metabolism and Reproductive unit so when studying for step I can remember! I under-utilized first aid as an M1 and wish I used it for all our units passed foundations. *UNSUBSCRIBED* Pardon me, but I’m gunna talk about ~God~ (ive typed that word so much it doesn’t look real. Wait, is that blasphemy?) I hardly talk about leaving the church because it feels too fresh and sometimes still confusing. Though it’s been ~unofficially~ 7 years but only about 3 since fully coming to terms with the decision. I spent a majority of those first couple years thinking that God was now off limits to me. All of the gifts I’d operated in, that made that relationship so real to me where now forbidden. At least, that’s what I had told myself. Couldn’t have been the “sin disqualifying leadership” mentality 🤪. Hurts my heart thinking about that time. I was so distraught. This was the same time I started trauma therapy. Being away from the church brought to light how much I had been suppressing just below my constant overcompensation. I didn’t have anyone to convince anymore, I guess. But also WHY TF did no one recognize how desperately I needed therapy before?!?! That one baffles me. Praying my mental illness away & forgiving my abusers had only given me generic bandaids for open wounds and a homerun testimony to tell. I’m doing my best to not point fingers here but let it be known, I was never trying to get away from God. It was the people. It’s the gatekeeping, legalism & blatant religiousness that you swear against for me. & if that means we serve different God’s, I am at complete peace with that. Rejoice in the freedom of never having to answer for me. ✨ My understanding of God has greatly shifted since quieting the voices of what I thought it had to be. It is now a constant conversation & an ever evolving connection that keeps life worth living. There is space to unlearn and explore without policing. There’s no scripts, curtain calls, or stages. This year puts a lot of things into perspective, doesnt it? Weve learned a lot about uncertainty. Fear. Courage. What it means to worry about our loved ones and their well-being. Thankfulness for the small things that make my home a safe and comforting refuge. Gratitude for this time with my husband: the gift of his nearness companionship. As much as I appreciate the technology that keeps me connected and keeps my business thriving... it also highlights the ways in which our screens cannot replace human interaction.⁣ ⁣ I just wanted to reach out. Lets stay in touch.⁣ ⁣ Its funny how these common phrases from our inboxes feel so far away from their true meaning: how much we yearn to reach for a friends hand or wrap them in a hug. How much it means to touch our loved ones and hold them close. A newfound appreciation for the senses—for the things that make us essentially human.⁣ ⁣ A screen cannot encapsulate the complexities of human conversation—subtle gestures and facial expressions that seem to be lost somewhere among the pixels.⁣ ⁣ Our eyes will never feel as refreshed by a screen as they do by nature. Endless scrolling will never be as good for the soul as laughing with a dear friend.⁣ ⁣ Our hearts ache for hospitality: to gather around a table and share a meal, to engage in conversation and serve each other.⁣ ⁣ I wish Id kept a journal at the start of this journey, but its never too late to start. Being back at work after a concussion isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. After only two days of work my eyes were super strained from screen time. I was feeling dizzy, nauseous, and exhausted. Being a teacher right now isn’t super easy either, since I’m definitely feeling a lot busier than normal. My brain just feels like it’s all over the place. It really made me think that I need to start ditching some of those bad habits I created while being off and bring back some of those non-negotiable habits I had set before this whole pandemic (I’ll share more on that later). One thing I for sure need to ditch...(which seems almost impossible)...that added screen time. Since COVID hit, many of us have been in front of screens A LOT more than usual. Be it for work, or helping our kids with their work, or wine nights online, to just being stuck in the “scroll hole” out of sheer boredom. All this added screen time can actually affect our overall well-being. I remember getting my weekly screen report and actually feeling sick by the sheer amount of time I was online. Yes, a lot for work, but still...no wonder my eyes are suffering & my concussion symptoms are acting up. Recently, I heard of the 20/20/20 rule for 2020 and I was actually intrigued by it. Heard of it? Well, it’s a rule designed to help you avoid digital eye strain from all that screen time. All you have to do is look up from your screen every 20 minutes and focus on an item about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. I know, it seems silly, or simple even, but it can actually help your eye muscles relax. Plus, the more you can actually take breaks from screens the better. Think about how this is affecting our kids now too? The 20/20/20 rule is great to try with your own kids or for us teachers to do in the classroom when screen time is getting high. “God already met every single one of our needs in Jesus. He cannot withhold the best from us because he’s already given the best to us in Jesus.” - @maggie__combs For the last year, I’ve been walking through a season of extreme discontentment. During this time, I’ve replaced Christ’s rightful place on the throne of my heart with other desires. Desires which in themselves were not bad, but which quickly become idols when they began ruling my heart. With these desires ruling my heart instead of Jesus, the fruit I’ve been bearing is not of the Spirit, but the works of the flesh. Things like pride, jealousy, envy, anger, and idolatry (Galatians 5:16-26). I’ve faced constant devastation and painful heartache as these desires have continued to go unmet. Through the @journeywomenpodcast episode, “What to Do With Unmet Expectations”, God used these amazing godly women to point me back to Scripture and back to himself, the true and ultimate desire of my heart. Maggie Combs reminded me, “God doesn’t promise to fulfill our every desire, but he does promise to fulfill our underlying desire. Any way he does that is righteous and kind (Ps. 145:16-17).” So why does he not give us our every desire? By doing so, he leaves us with a 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓, an emptiness that God and God alone can fill and satisfy. He is always at work drawing us back to him for his glory. Seek him in your discontent. Even if God in his sovereign will and mighty kindness does grant me that which I desire, it will never fully satisfy. A BURNING by Megha Majumdar (@megha.maj) is America’s new favourite novel set in India. This raging debut is an illuminating read on the current state of Indian society and politics, which is experiencing dark times under the pressure and influence of right-wing extremism. Modern democracies are becoming corrupt under fascist leaders, making this a story that brings out unmissable parallels between India and the US. Im sure it is such a frustrating time right now for those of you trying to plan a wedding, not knowing if or when restrictions may be lifted, or being forced to have a much smaller wedding than you originally intended. What’s one of your hobbies outside of reading? 💗 Not too long ago I asked you to recommend me some notebooks for bullet journaling. First of all, thank you for all the replies! Last year I had an Archer & Olive notebook which I LOVED because the paper is so thick (160gsm) so I can basically use any marker without the fear of ghosting or bleed through. However, shipping from the US to Norway is quite expensive so I thought I would have to find something cheaper BUT on A&O’s website they have links to other websites that sell their product and so I managed to find a place in the Uk that shipped to Norway for a reasonable price and I’m so so happy with my new bujo 💘 please let me know if you want to see more bujo themed photos! I saw you all quite liked my reading journal so I’ll share more of that one as well in the future 🥰 I hope you all had a lovely weekend! Stress —————— Can you tell when your body is stressed? For me, I know I am stressed when I start to feel more fatigued throughout the day. Like I could just lounge around all day. But then at night I’ll be somewhat nocturnal. Which explains a lot about me feeling so tired but it’s a constant cycle even if I sleep 7 hours. . I like to decompress by just being outside and by myself. My favorite places to go are quiet and near water or trees. I find nature just really calms me down. . Today, I pulled out my genetics textbook and a blanket then found an empty park to just read and relax. After a little while, I took a breather and flipped over onto my back, put in my headphones, and soaked up some sun. I definitely feel a lot better now. Ready for this overnight shift 🤪 . I know we are all a little stir crazy. A reminder that COVID-19 is very much real and spreading. But, I encourage you to find ways to unplug for a moment and destress. My sweet friend, Katie, sent me this photo as she‘s in the process of moving. We met when we were fourteen, went to high school together, and she was one of the first people outside of my family who knew I wanted to be a writer. ⁣ This is the very first book I ever finished writing—over ten years ago. She had printed out several versions of THE MAPMAKER OF MERIVALE, and kept the pages for over a decade. ⁣ (It must be noted that in those eleven-ish years, she moved to a new state, changed apartments three times, and is now taking the pages with her to New York. Like. I don’t have words. And I’m supposed to because I’m a writer. But seriously no words for this brand of affection and loyalty and support). ⁣ I haven’t read this story in a decade, but I remember the highlights: a YA fantasy set in Spain, with dragons, and an island not found on any map. Guys, I’m probably never going to rework or revisit this story, but it taught me so much. I learned how to tell a story. (A really awful story, but still). And yet this book is, essentially, dead to me. ⁣ Or so I thought...? ⁣ Because eleven-ish years later, I wrote and sold a book inspired by medieval Spain and about dragons. 😮 ⁣ It’s funny how ideas and inspiration stay with us, how they transform when given enough time to marinate. If you’re lamenting a book that you’ve tucked away, never to be seen again, don’t worry. Parts of that story might follow you into another world, another book, and the original idea might be better for it. ⁣ (Or your friend might text you a photo of a manuscript when you’re *eleven* years older and remind you that you’ve always wanted to write a story inspired by medieval Spain with dragons.) ⁣ Sometimes ideas take time. They usually do for me, but I think I realized how important it is to draw inspiration from the things you love. Things that interest you. Those elements that first sparked your imagination. I think it’s wise to be aware of the market, and plan accordingly, but I’m wary of chasing trends. They are fickle monsters, constantly changing and hard to control. AD . Do you ever read a book and just think to yourself “I feel seen”? Well, that’s how I feel flipping every page of The School of Life by Alain de Botton and @TheSchoolofLifeLondon. Alain de Botton is one of my all time favourite authors. He’s a writer and philosopher and has a way of putting into words things I had felt that I had never quite been able to articulate. In fact, he is so good at this that he co-founded @TheSchoolofLifeLondon in 2008, an organisation dedicated to helping people find calm, self-understanding, resilience and connection. And earlier this month they released their book, The School of Life, which I am currently making my way through. Split into 5 sections focussed on the Self, Others, Work, Relationships & Culture, it is a book about everything you were never taught at school. It’s about how to understand your emotions, find (and sustain) love, succeed in your career, fail well and overcome shame and guilt. I am all for personal development and self-discovery books of this nature and adore the overarching message that we need to let go of this myth of a “perfect life”. I’m currently in the “Relationships” section and oof I feel like Alain de Botton can see into my soul!! The book is split into very short, digestible sections and I know I’ll be reaching back for this book for comfort and guidance during turbulent periods. A journal is one of the most beloved companions to the heart. A tireless patient listener, holding space for one to process through the caverns of thought and feeling, without so much as the slightest projection of unsolicited wisdom or advice, or the posture of knowing what one should do over the one splaying its humanity throughout the pages. It holds steady as the river of words pour forth and it lends a space of dignity by allowing for a soul to come to its own conclusion in simply being able to process life without interruption. And somehow in the midst of the mess and mud and joyful accountings, it becomes even more lovely with pages crinkled and filled with endless scribblings. Partial quotients and estimation are two of my favorite things to teach! When I first switched to teaching division using partial quotients in 5th grade with a toolbox, I saw a HUGE difference. Not just with my 5th graders, but also with my 6th graders the following year. The difference showed both in their academics but also in their confidence. • When you have students use a toolbox, it allows them to use and practice facts they already know. That takes a lot of the pressure off the fact that they are doing division. Were only a couple of days into September, yet it feels like Summer is already a far distant memory. first week of classes is DONE and I am alive to tell the tale😅 seriously though, the fire hose analogy is no joke. here are my biggest takeaways from this week:⁣ ⁣ 💡I need to figure out how to structure my days & how to study! once I have a routine, I will feel less overwhelmed and more productive⁣ ⁣ 💡everyone will share their two cents about how you should study- this can be helpful, so try out things that may work for you📚but don’t lose confidence in yourself & your methods if they are different from somebody else’s⁣ ⁣ 💡weaning myself down to 1 coffee/day was pointless- bring on the caffeine☕️⁣ ⁣ 💡sitting at a desk all day is TOUGH. my Apple Watch is confused at my sudden sedentary habits- going to take a page from @claudiaegreen’s book and try to figure out Anki so I can do flash cards on my walk breaks with Luka🐶⁣ ⁣ 💡it’s normal to feel overwhelmed- talk about it to your friends, chances are they feel the same way too. lean on each other!⁣ ⁣ 💡speaking of friends, don’t be afraid to cold call people in your class fb group (esp w classes being mostly virtual). that’s how I’ve connected w a lot of the people I talk to in my class, no shame🤓⁣ ⁣ fellow M1’s and med students, what are your pro tips for getting started? - @running.inscrubs on Instagram

How do we put the #Wordbeforeworld? This is something I’ve understood intellectually and spiritually—God comes first—but struggled with practically. Here are 5 ways to put God first: 1. Put the Word of God before the things of this world, literally. Start your day by spending time with God in the Word and through prayer. Doing this helps you focus and set your heart on the Lord before filling your mind with the worries and things of this world. 2. Meditate on Scripture. I and the ladies in my faith and fitness group have recently taken a cue from @gretchensaffles on this one by writing God’s Word on our hand. A verse or a few words from a verse serve as a constant reminder throughout our day. 3. Be constant in prayer. I don’t know about you, but more often than not I found myself complaining about things more than I pray about them. Here’s what I’ve started to do: every time I open my mouth or start texting a complaint, I stop myself and turn it into prayer. 4. Fill up on godly content. It can be tempting to listen to or watch things that don’t point to God, or even deliberately point us away from God. One thing I like to do is play worship music or listen to a Christian podcast or audiobook throughout my day. 5. Serve and love others. Jesus himself tells us the greatest commandment is to love God and love others (Matthew 22). We can put this into practice by serving others. What can you do today to lend a helping hand or bless someone else? Remember, Jesus tells us that those things we do for others, we do for him (Matthew 25). I hope these tips are helpful. Yesterday marked nine years since my mom passed. Every year I try to do something to celebrate her and this year was all about nostalgia. We lived in CDM for many years when I was a kid- and some of my favorite childhood memories stem from this very special place. We used to walk to the beach frequently since it was just up the street from our house. We had countless beach parties at Big corona... we Christmas caroled and trick or treated on Balboa Island... And we must’ve walked that flower bridge a thousand times. Being a fierce Pisces she loved the ocean so much ... so my tradition has also been to spread her ashes in various oceans each year- this time at Little corona. She was an avid journal’er and wrote me those letters over the first 18 years of my life and I think I’ve read it about 10 times and continue to find out something new each read. I found another one recently where she writes about her time in Europe/ Hawaii and just life in her 20’s which gave me some insight to just “her” before she was my mom. I brought an old shirt of hers and wore it all day just because - it felt good. As I walked down these all too familiar streets (ironically CDM streets are all named after flowers🤷🏻‍♀️) I just felt happiness. Happiness that my mom was so devoted to giving me the most wonderful happy childhood in such a beautiful place. Grateful that I got to spend 25 years with a mom who pushed me and groomed me to deal with the realities of life and that it is not always easy! I felt inspired by her determination to be the best mom she could be even with all the setbacks or sacrifices she had to make. Just so eternally grateful and I hope I’ve made her proud because i’m so proud to be her daughter. 💞 - @nuleafdesign on Instagram

Right now, I’m studying for the HESI A2, which is a standardized test for most ABSN programs. Whether it’s the LSAT, MCAT, GRE, TEAS,HESI A2, etc., how did you study for it? Anything particular?
