News that the @tosantaparade is moving online this year due to COVID-19 restrictions has us thinking about past parades this #TBT. The idea for the parade originated from a 1904 Eatons promotion that featured #Santa walking from Union Station to the Eatons store on Queen. Sponsored by Eatons department stores, the first official parade was held with a single float in 1905. Wat een mooi en bijzonder vervolg op het bericht over het laatste jaar van Lavooy Mode: op Instagram kregen we een persoonlijk berichtje van @jkbh69 (Jongker Huwaë). Hij schreef ons: Naar aanleiding van jullie bericht over kledingzaak Lavooij stuur ik julli nog wat oude foto’s. Mijn vader Johan Huwaë was de pleegzoon van de oude heer Lavooij in de jaren 50. Hij werkte daar om allerlei klusjes te doen zoals pakken rondbrengen etc. en: Dhr Lavooij had een zwak voor de Molukse bevolking die rond 1951 in Nederland aankwam, vooral voor mijn vader. Dhr Lavooij was ook een grote fan van mijn vader. Hij speelde toen voetbal bij Middelburg. Jongker voegde er ook nog aan toe dat er waarschijnlijk wel krantenknipsels over zijn overleden vader zijn te vinden. Hij heeft gelijk. We vonden onder meer een prachtig artikel uit de PZC van oktober 1995. In dat artikel, getiteld Johan Huwaë, een klein acrobaat in het Zeeuwse voetbal wordt het verhaal over deze stervoetballer verteld. Tof hoor. Wat ons betreft maakt dat die toch al fraaie fotos nog mooier. Bedankt Jongker! Thevis made an appeal to Saint Roch (Walken), patron saint of the diseased and disabled, to heal the sick in his church, promising to erect a chapel in the saint’s honor. Miraculously, no one in Thevis’ church succumbed to yellow fever. Thevis, making good on his promise, laid the cornerstone of what would become the St. Roch Chapel on September 6, 1875, and the legendary St. Roch Cemetery soon sprang up beside it, shown here in the 1990s.
