Happy National Public Lands Day! This special day is often marked by large group volunteer projects in public lands all over the country and although this day looks a little different this year, it is still a date worth noting in our parks. We recognize on this and every day that we have a lot to be thankful for and wanted to share an example of the good work being done to preserve this special place this season. This summer, an all-female youth crew, in partnership with Conversation Corps North Carolina (CCNC), worked in the Linville Falls area on trail restoration and preservation. This awesome crew accomplished a lot during their season, including this before and after of their root coverage work. In covering these sections and creating a smooth tread surface, they have transformed this trail into a safer and more accessible experience. Thank you for your hard work ladies! The National Park Service works together with volunteers and partners, like Conservation Corps North Carolina, the National Park Foundation and many others, to help maintain a high level of service and visitor experience along the Blue Ridge Parkway. To all our partners and volunteers, thank you for your help in keeping the parkway a special place! #npld #nationalpubliclandsday Image Description: Side by side before and after photos of Linville falls trail. One photo shows a trail with lots of roots curing around the bend. The second shows a trail with a smooth, gravel walking surface meandering through the forest. - @blueridgenps on Instagram

Like and old man with a full beard, this old fir has mature, old moss hanging off it with grace and maturity. As an old man would have the wisdom of lifes trials and joys... this old fir has the wisdom and experience of the forest. Makes one wonder which is more relevant. While researching about forests for my next book, I found out something pretty cool: Redwood trees roots don’t grow very deep- despite their massive size. They have withstood devastating earthquakes and disastrous storms over many centuries not because of deep root systems- but because just underground, their roots grow OUT, and they reach for the roots of other trees. Then when their roots meet, they wrap around each other. They create a permanent bond- and in this way they support each other. Then the itty bitty baby trees wrap their little thread-like roots around the giant roots of the ancients. They all help each other weather the storms. Every tree in the entire forest is either directly or indirectly supporting each other. I feel it’s the same for people- especially now. We need to do our best to support one another through this long and turbulent storm. Sending you all love today! ❤️❤️ #redwoods #roots #loveoneanother #hiking #getyourkidsoutside - @tanialita on Instagram

It was a day when I saw Amur leopard for my first time. Beautiful October, silent forest, checking camera traps during our first expedition to the northern part of Leopard Land NP... I was out of humor, a bit tired, deep in my thoughts when ranger cried: Leopard, leopard, look! It was in about 100 meters of us, running away to the pines grove. POSES// #52 of portfolio images taken by @jeffthrower⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This pose is the same as yesterdays pose! Just taken from a different angle, in color and outdoors!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Its amazing how one pose can create many different emotions depending on how its photographed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is why its important as a model to talk to the photographer about what their goal is with the final image⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The human body can only create so many shapes, but its up to a model to make those same shapes mean different things⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you love a certain pose try looking at it from a different angle or with a different expression! - @daisyvonmodel on Instagram

For my 29th birthday I really wanted to backpack 29 miles. Ive never backpacked before. Things Ive learned on my first backpacking trip: 1. Get a pack that fits. If you dont, youll resort to shoving any excess clothing you may have into your shorts to fill out the spaces between you and your pack. 2. Rattle snakes will warn you when youre too close. But even then, youre too fucking close. 3. Just because you CAN carry 2 days worth of water in the hopes of avoiding drinking stream water, doesnt mean you should. 4. Maps become outdated quicker than freeze-dried meals. 5. Bring a machete. If confused, see lesson 4. 6. Coffee tastes better with a side of nature 7. Blackberry bushes will make you bleed your own blood. And do so unregretably, because theyre sweet and can get away with it. Things I already knew but were reinforced: 1. Ticks can roam on your body for 2 days before cashing in. 2. Being outdoors does wonders for mental health. 3. So does challenging yourself physically. 4. Damn, Im pale. I dont know how many miles we actually did, but it didnt matter. I wanted to challenge myself in a way that took me out of the mindset Ive had for the past few months. I wanted to be consumed by something other than current events. And I was. So, it was a success. - @awe_brie on Instagram
