Måske har du hørt dig selv sige noget a la: Du SKAL smage! Spis nu din broccoli! Du har jo ingenting spist! Man SKAL have lidt af det hele! Det er nu, der er mad – spis så! Det kan ik’ passe, at du ikke er sulten. Men lige lidt hjælper det. Tværtimod: jo mere vi presser, jo større bliver modstanden. Og det er der ikke noget at sige til. For når børn føler sig pressede, snører deres maver sig sammen. Sker det igen og igen, erfarer de, at spisebordet er et sted, hvor andre vil forsøge at tvinge dem til noget, de ikke vil. Et utrygt sted. Et konfliktfyldt sted. En krigszone. Så hvad kan vi gøre i stedet? Først og fremmest skal vi stole på barnet. The pandemic has undoubtedly had us all reaching for our screens 📱🖥 more but do we need to worry that blue light from our screens is damaging our skin? I read a sensationalist headline this morning about this in a major British newspaper & wanted to discuss: 🔷What is blue light? Blue light is a visible light (i.e. one that our eyes can detect) that sits next to the ultra-violet (UV) part of the light spectrum & has a relatively high energy level. It’s sometimes called HEVL or high energy visible light, you might see this label on some sunscreens. Visible light makes up about 40% of the light reaching us from the sun compared to around only 4% being UV. Although visible light is lower energy than UV there is a lot more of it reaching us. We often refer to different types of light as if they are entirely different entities. This is not true, light is a continuous spectrum of different bands. We have grouped some of these bands together due to them having similar wavelengths which gives rise to similar energy levels & skin penetration. It’s similar to you tuning the dial on your radio: 90-91 FM might be radio 2, turn the dial a bit more to 92-95 FM & you hit radio 4. But there is always a fuzzy bit in-between where the 2 stations overlap. 🔷Is blue light bad for your skin? Yes, for some people. The effects are: 1️⃣ Can induce hyperpigmentation in medium to dark skin. 2️⃣ Some rare light-sensitive disorders in dermatology are triggered by visible light (e.g. porphyria). 3️⃣ Potentially contributes to premature ageing through generation of free radicals, the data on this is limited. 🔷What are the sources of blue light? The overwhelming main source of blue light that we are exposed to is the sun, the massive light source in the sky. The BC Centre for Disease Control released some tips this week to help British Columbians stay safe while participating in sexual activity during the pandemic. One of their recommendations was that intercourse be limited to positions with minimal face-to-face contact. That makes sense, I suppose, since COVID-19 is a respiratory virus, although I feel like if you’re at the point where you’ve decided to have sex with someone, you should probably just bring them into your social bubble and call it a day, but I digress. They then go on to elaborate by suggesting engaging in positions involving barriers that allow for sexual contact, but prevent close face-to-face contact (e.g., glory holes)… (E.G., GLORY HOLES)?!?
