On this particular morning we spotted these 13 Wild Dog puppies who were left alone. We passed 2 hyenas going towards the puppies about 300 metres earlier. Parents arrived in the nick of time and chased approaching hyenas who were now very close. There was relief all round. With the glow of the afternoon sun quickly fading, this black-backed jackal surged through a mass of vultures in an attempt to claim a spot at the dinner table. The giraffe was already dead when we found it – presumably from old age – and a slew of scavengers had moved in for the feast. Although there was plenty of food to go around, sharing is not a trait possessed by hungry carnivores, and much squabbling and tussling ensued as those present competed for prime position at the carcass. It may seem like an unceremonious end for the giraffe, but its demise helps fuel a cyclical ecosystem. A partir del próximo lunes (14 de Septiembre) comienza a realizarse el tour de cerro mauco (cerca de San Felipe). El treking consiste en una caminata que comienza a las 8:30 de la mañana con el objetivo de llegar a a la cima de un cerro dónde se avistan aguilas y Condores. En el recorrido está la posibilidad ver cernícalos, peucos, Chunchos, carpinteritos, loicas, degús, aguiluchos, pequenes, turcas, zorros culpeo y muchas cosas más, además en primavera el cerro comienza a florecer y en la cima se tiene una hermosa vista de la cordillera. Todo interesado contáctenos por dm, al correo o al número que aparece en la pantalla. Son 10 mil pesos la salida (el grupo entero) y para subir el cerro maximo 3 personas, con la opción de no subir el cerro y caminar por un sendero si son más personas. Like many packs in the Luangwa and Kafue ecosystems these dogs are at high risk of getting snared, and intensive monitoring and de-snaring efforts by ZCP-DNPW-CSL teams have saved multiple dogs in the Muphamadzi pack, allowing them to focus their efforts on raising this year’s pups! Time for another CONDOR UPDATE! What a whirlwind of emotions so far in 2020. We’ve had devastating news coming at us throughout the year, so we want to give you a little ray of sunshine! We are thrilled to report that Condor 1027, the only condor nestling in the park this year, has flown from her nest a full month early! This precocious youngster bravely opened her huge wings and took a leap of faith into the air on Friday, September 18. Young condors typically fledge, or take their first flight, after six months in the nest. Condor 1027 is only 5 months old and was clearly itching to gain some independence! She’s been seen taking short flights and making awkward landings as she learns to navigate this new airborne world. Interestingly, both of her older siblings (Condor 828 in 2016 and Condor 912 in 2018) were raised in the same nest, and they also both fledged a month early. It seems this particular site offers a lot of room to roam and exercise, so they are able to build up their flight muscles more quickly than typical condor nestlings. Condor 1027 will stay close to both of her parents for up to another year until she is fully independent. She will eventually take longer and longer flights, so hopefully you’ll be able to see her in the skies above Pinnacles in the not-too-distant future! Deux longues pattes à griffes d’un noir soyeux et poilues dignes de la série des Dracula en sortent. Visiblement, mieux vaut ne pas relâcher la pression. La bête s’agite avec force. Vincent Prié, dit Batman, est un grand gaillard breton campagnard débordant de bonne humeur. (…) Ingénieur de recherche au bureau d’étude Biotope, il participe au projet Makay pour inventorier des chauve-souris sur les différents sites envisagés dans l’expé. Vincent compte pour ça utiliser des techniques traditionnelles (capture, prospection de cavités) et modernes (génétique, bio-acoustique). L’objectif général est de collecter du matériel et des données (échantillons de tissus, enregistrements de sons) à l’attention des chercheurs travaillant plus spécifiquement sur Madagascar.
