Ustad Shamsuddin Faridi Desai (1936-2011) was a rudra veena (bīn) master musician from Bhavnagar district of Saurashtra in Gujarat state, India. He was taught by his father, Muhammad Khan Faridi, who came from the Gauharbani Gharana. Shamsuddin Faridi Desai belonged to Islamic Qadri Sufism and firmly considered music to be a form of prayer. This past weekend the man that raised me and loved me from the age of 8 years till the present passed away after battling cancer since November of last year. Thank you for teaching me how catch a baseball, showing up to all of my graduations, taking care of my mother and never disrespecting her. You showed me that it was never too late to go back to school after you graduated with a BA in Psychology from City College, you made that happen over 12 years of going to night school. John Rossi, 93, of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania playing his accordion in his basement, exactly one month after his wife of 76 years, Martha, passed away. They’d gotten married when he was 17 and she was 15, their families had objected, but they did it anyway. He told me what missing her felt like to him…and picked up his accordion to play her favorite song…John had been playing the accordion every day since the age of 13 and the waves of emotion that flowed from the notes he played picked her up into the whole of the house…as i photographed him, he looked straight through me and into the harmony…he was such an elegant man and began to cry as he put the accordion away…he pulled out a neatly folded handkerchief from his back pocket, lifted his glasses, wiped his eyes, turned to me and asked if i would stay for dinner…we ate egg and baloney sandwiches on Wonderbread with a glass of milk… Martha had done all the cooking throughout their time together, he washed the dishes… John worked for US Steel for 45 years and was born in Tuscany, Italy. He became a renowned accordion soloist as well…and loved to go fishing…he died 6 years later but the memory of that day has become one of my most cherished ghosts. The grace of this quiet man in such a time of grief was hard for me to imagine and he asked me what i thought about Heaven…and then i asked him back, he said “where Martha is…probably cooking for God himself, and here we are, eating baloney and egg sandwiches…where would you rather be?” Nonetheless, the grace of the world was alive in that man in that house that day, despite his sorrow… Wendell Berry, a graceful man from Kentucky wrote: Where is our comfort but in the free, finally mysterious beauty and grace of this world that we did not make, that has no price? Where is our sanity but there? Carretes de sonido. Fotos inéditas. Latas de 16 mm sin revelar. El cuarteto de Arribeños tocando cuatro temas durante su último concierto, frente a la fauna beat del Teatro Pueyrredón de Flores. Y -atención- un diálogo entre Luis Alberto Spinetta, Pappo, Edelmiro Molinari, Pomo y Carlos Cutaia en la casa de Arribeños. Era un tesoro desarticulado, para ordenar. Desenterrado en silencio por un montón de hombres y mujeres apasionados y dispersos en el mapa. Poco a poco, triangulando mensajes entre Córdoba, Santa Fe, La Rioja, Buenos Aires, Rafaela, La Plata y algunos puntos de China y España, fuimos desentrañando una parte del misterio y entrando a uno mucho más grande: la historia de Alcira Luengas. La documentalista cordobesa que retrató la separación de Almendra en tiempo real y después pareció perderse en la noche de los tiempos. On this day in 1983, I played the first ARMS concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Stew (Ian Stewart from the Rolling Stones) had invited me to do this concert at a party at Jeff Becks country home. It was to be for Ronnie Lane and the Action Research into Multiple Sclerosis, a condition to which he unfortunately had become a victim. It had been outlined that the three former Yardbirds would be playing separate sets and maybe play together at the end of the evening. Steve Winwood was also to perform. I agreed enthusiastically to commit to the show, it was only the following day that it dawned on me that I was the only one not to have a solo career with the exception of the Death Wish II soundtrack which made putting a set together for this event an interesting and challenging experience. The opening number was Prelude, a re-arranged Chopin prelude in E Minor, performed specifically to employ the house in-built Victorian pipe organ into the set. It was played magnificently by American James Horner. City Sirens and Whos to Blame from the Death Wish II album had Steve Winwood graciously supplying vocals. The set culminated in an instrumental version of Stairway to Heaven - the first time I had performed this on my own. Em 22 de setembro de 1945 nascia Gonzaguinha, filho de Luiz Gonzaga e da cantora e dançarina Odaléia Santos e ficou órfão de mãe logo aos 2 anos. Gonzaguinha aprendeu cedo (aos 14 anos) a fazer música no convívio com membros da ala de compositores da Unidos de São Carlos. Os primeiros acordes de violão ele aprendeu com o padrinho Henrique Xavier com quem foi criado. Já na época da faculdade se juntou a nomes como Ivan Linz e Domingos. Foi acusado de terrorista por um jurado durante um programa de tv e depois disso foi perseguido pela ditadura, tendo várias músicas censuradas. Em 1991 Gozanguinha nos deixou em um acidente de carro. Gonzaguinha deixou seu legado com suas marcas, mesmo sendo filho de um gigante da música brasileira. Deixou clássicos como a música Lindo lago do amor talvez a minha preferida. My remembrance of how Terry Ork & I first met is a bit sketchy. He showed up at the Union Square Factory in summer 1969, just when I was getting the 1st issue of Interview underway & we took a liking to each other immediately, that I brought him in as my personal assistant on the magazine, actually in newspaper format in those early days as conceived by my co-editor, John Wilcock, who was the brainstorm to this incubating venture. Terry showed an aptitude for his vast knowledge of Hollywood movies over all. For the magazines 2nd issue, I commissioned him to interview the underground poet/filmmaker, Piero Heliczer, a real 1st, since Piero had never been interviewed before for anything. It was a total success for its time. Terry brought in a Class-A interview, that I upgraded his title on the masthead to Associate Editor. And it was just about this time, having acquired a sub-lease to a sprawling midtown flat that had the ambiance of a farmhouse interior, that I asked Terry to move in with me, feeling as I sensed, that he was excellent at looking after things & in organizing my busy life. The concept of Management & Terry were the perfect fit. He had plenty of ideas & dreams that may have seemed far-fetched at first, but managed to get a whole lot done nonetheless. We occupied the flat till the end of 1970. I moved on to more country digs in the Massachusetts Berkshires & Terry found a loft on East Broadway in the overhanging shadow of the Manhattan Bridge where he started up Ork Records & became the 1st producer specializing in Punk Rock. He knew just about everybody. All the while, we stayed in touch. There was no end to our friendship. We reunited in New York, gifting me with some rare Jean-Luc Godard 2-fold posters. He knew I had a yearning to collect anything Godard. He had a way gravitating talent around him & my initial sense of him had proven me right yet again. We were friends for life.
