Happy birthday to French artist Edgar Degas, who was born on this day in 1834. At the last Impressionist show in 1886, the 52-year-old Edgar Degas exhibited six nudes from a series of pastels on paper depicting women at their toilette. One of the things that I appreciate about the works from this period are the fact that the women are wholly absorbed in their bathing rituals, presented with a tone of matter-of-fact beauty rather than a lewd voyeurism. Every one of us has times when we need to know things will get better. For emotional health and spiritual stamina, everyone needs to be able to look forward to some respite, to something pleasant and renewing and hopeful, whether that blessing be near at hand or still some distance ahead. My declaration is that this is precisely what the gospel of Jesus Christ offers us, especially in times of need. There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened” (Mosiah 16:9). It is the very Son of God Himself. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say, hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve. Even if you cannot always see that silver lining on your clouds, God can, for He is the very source of the light you seek. He does love you, and He knows your fears. He hears your prayers. Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven, but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. 🔍 FOCUS SUR // FOCUS ON 🔎 Vincent van Gogh, La Méridienne ou La Sieste (1889-1890): La méridienne fut peinte lors du séjour de Van Gogh à Saint-Rémy de Provence alors quil était interné dans un asile. La composition est reprise dun dessin de Millet pour les Quatre heures de la journée. Vincent justifie sa démarche à son frère Théo : Cest plutôt traduire dans une autre langue, celle des couleurs, les impressions de clair-obscur en blanc et noir. Van Gogh a copié à de nombreuses reprises des oeuvres de Millet quil considérait comme un peintre plus moderne que Manet. Fidèle à la composition originale jusque dans les détails de la nature morte du premier plan, Van Gogh fait pourtant complètement sienne cette scène de repos qui symbolise chez Millet la France rurale des années 1860. Cette retranscription personnelle se fait essentiellement par une construction chromatique fondée sur le contraste des couleurs complémentaires bleu-violet et jaune-orangé. Malgré le caractère apaisant du sujet on y retrouve lintensité unique de lart de Van Gogh. . Vincent van Gogh, The siesta (1889-1890): The siesta was painted while Van Gogh was interned in a mental asylum in Saint-Rémy de Provence. The composition is taken from a drawing by Millet for Four Moments in the Day. To justify his act, Vincent told his brother Theo: I am using another language, that of colours, to translate the impressions of light and dark into black and white. Van Gogh often copied the works of Millet, whom he considered to be a more modern painter than Manet. Remaining faithful to the original composition, even down to the still life details in the foreground, Van Gogh nevertheless imposes his own style upon this restful scene which, for Millet, symbolized rural France of the 1860s. This highly personal retranscription is achieved primarily by means of a chromatic construction based on contrasting complementary colours: blue-violet, yellow-orange. Despite the peaceful nature of the subject, the picture radiates Van Goghs unique artistic intensity. . ♦️The Punishment of Tityus♦️⠀ ⠀ 👨🎨By: Titian⠀ ⠀ 📍Location: @museoprado⠀ ⠀ 📚According to myth, Tityus was the son of Zeus and his mortal lover Elara, the daughter of King Orchomenus. In order to hide his pregnant lover from his fiercely jealous wife Hera, Zeus hid Elara deep, deep underground, where should would give birth with the greatest of pain. ⠀ Tityus proved to be a raging, violent, irrepressibly lustful creature, and upon discovering his existence Hera was only too glad to use the giant to her own ends. She inspired Tityus to try to rape Leto, the arrogant mother of Apollo (god of light, music, and poetry) and Artemis (goddess of wisdom and the hunt).⠀ The two gods were always anxious to defend their mother and easily shot Tityus down with their arrows. However, they were unable to kill the monster: as a son of Zeus, Tityus was immortal.
