She and his little brother died in childbirth due to complications I’m not totally aware of and he didn’t speak about this very much. Karen locked away and carried a lot of shame, that wasn’t really hers to hold, in her life. I share, in some part, because they often didn’t. Music historian Ruben Molina @flacosoul, who has his own deep roots in Elysian Valley takes us on a journey through the neighborhood, also known as Frogtown, weaving in stories, and soundtracks, from a childhood spent along the Los Angeles River. Through his vivid, personal history, Molina treats us to a firsthand view of a neighborhood that has been molded by natural and manmade forces, yet like the river it borders, retains a spirit all its own. In lieu of the ridestream, we’ll be sharing audio clips plus bike safety tips from SCAG and the Metro Bike for future rides via our IG stories plus a planned future rebroadcast. Ivan and Pang came out before, but I don’t think anyone connected the NYC and SF scenes quite like Keith did in the early 90s. Through him we got to meet, and become friends, with every great skater from New York at that time; Keefe, Liversedge, Keenan, Bici, Hernie and Gio. Jersey and Philly guys too; Quim, Mike, Bobby, Freddie & Jerry, all stayed or lived at his apartment on, a then very different, Oak & Octavia. All silently vouched for by an unassuming Keith. Just these city kids from back East connecting with some city kids out West. And because of this, Keith seamlessly was able to represent both cities, where he got some of the most iconic photos of that often un-photogenic big pants little tires era (thanks, Morf, Dawes & Tobin). He was just a cut above the rest, in general. A solid, dependable friend who opened stores, created businesses, hired his buddies, and started a family. He, and Anne, also stepped up in a real big way when Keenan passed. And I think that’s the Keith I’ll remember. Being there for others. We are considering proposals for projects that include door-to-door canvassing to get community members registered to vote, producing community events, tabling at existing community events, helping register voters make a plan to vote, and getting policies passed through Tribal Councils related to voter registration. The Foundation is also considering proposals for projects focused on getting Native Peoples elected and preparing Indigenous candidates for school elections as well as Tribal and public office. This might include bringing in Indigenous students who have successfully been elected to student government to discuss their lessons learned, or doing the same for Tribal officials and/or Indigenous people elected to public office. This could also support presentations to students about student government and visiting Indigenous students at colleges to learn about college-student government. Additionally, PTM Foundation is considering proposals for projects designed to distribute information to Native Peoples for advocacy. This could include having a letter-writing event about a current issue, planning a trip to your states capital, teaching community members how to engage their elected officials, having training in how to use social media to promote community concerns, or funding a visual or advertising campaign (Billboard, Radio, TV, Print Media). Thank you @samesizedfeet for this lil blast from the past. As far as I can recall we had just done an early radio station gig, like, 6am limo call time, champers in the limo (of course) and more champers at the gig. Afterwards @matthewjamesuk and I decided to hijack the limo and to go on a tour of London. And at this point, of course... morning drinking and all, we were shit faced. We bought fresh strawberries and more booze from Selfridges, like you do, and then drove around London, head out the moon roof screaming at people. Good times. Slept the rest of the day. The Bonus Army Marched on Washington-1932: Determine to collect their bonus pay for service, 15,000-25,000 World War I veterans gather and begin setting up encampments near the White House and the Capital in Washington, DC. On June 15, the House passes Comgressman Wright Patman bonus bill by a vote of 209 to 176. The bill fails to defeat in the Senate, however, 62 to 18. Today, September 23rd, is #BiVisibilityDay! Also known as Bisexuality+ Day, Bisexual Pride Day, and Celebrate Bisexuality Day, it was first observed in 1999 at the International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg South Africa. The idea was developed by three bisexual rights activists: Wendy Curry, Michael Page, and Gigi Raven Wilbur. The date was chosen as a reference to Freddie Mercury whose birthday is in September. For me snowboarding has always been as much about travel as it has been about riding. Wherever you go, ski resorts are basically islands for rich people, so I always figured you might as well try and find out a bit about the world while dragging your boardbag behind you on the way to the mountains. - That’s how me, Nelson Pratt, @truetiler, @jamesmcphoto and @ewanwallace ended up going to Argentina in 2002, and found ourselves looking like frightened rabbits in the middle of a classic Argentine ‘Cacerolazo’ - a demonstration where crowds gather and bang pots and pans in protest - on our first night in Buenos Aires. - This one was a thousands-strong demonstration about the devaluation of the Argentine peso, which had basically wiped out the country’s savings and pensions overnight and brought the country out into the streets. - That trip was also the first time I really understood how good Nels was at snowboarding. On our second day in Las Lenas we built a jump with the world’s sketchiest run-in. Nelson’s warm up was a massive, casually stomped frontside 7, and things progressed from there. - I didn’t do too many trips with Nelson, but feel privileged I got to share this experience and a few more with him.
