Join us for Trimtab Space Camp, featuring @myrondewey Myron Dewey a filmmaker, journalist, digital storyteller, and the founder of @digitalsmokesignals , a media production company that aims to give a platform to indigenous voices in media. Dewey will guide us on an exploration in both decolonizing our minds and indigenizing our technology. We will deepen our understanding of the injustices towards native people, reviewing the history of genocide, boarding schools and present day federal injustices. We will discuss indigenous fire management and the history of forests and native people. Dewey will lead us through exercises to explore what being an ally looks like for each of us. We will look at land acknowledgement, trauma healing, and the importance of learning history so that we can break the cycles of colonization. Trimtab Space Camp: Climate Justice, Futurism, Design Science, and Decolonization, a five-week experience, with a different module every week -- theres a 60-90m video you do on your own time, and then office hours once a week with the speaker with some other optional content. Every 4th rape victim in India is a MINOR. Girl raped by MINOR youth in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. • A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an adolescent in a village in Mathura district, police said on Monday. • On Saturday, the girl stepped out of her house to buy some groceries from a nearby shop when she was waylaid by the youth and raped in a lonely place. • The youth was also from the same village. • The accused had been arrested and sent to juvenile custody. • The girl underwent a medical examination and returned home to her parents. • An FIR had been lodged by the victim’s father under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Nossa equipe conseguiu conter o fogo e impedir que invadisse nossa estrutura, equipamentos e veículos antes mesmo da chegada do corpo de Bombeiros. Youth in their first year after graduating from high school can also join. All clubs will be meeting virtually and are without charge until in person meetings resume. “4-H Clubs provide students in Union County with unique opportunities to practice teamwork, organization, leadership and other important life skills,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “The Freeholder Board is very proud to support the 4-H program in our community in a virtual capacity until it is safe for students to meet in person.” 4-H Clubs are organized by age and topic. The members meet with an adult club leader on a monthly basis during the school year to plan activities and programs. This #climateweek we want to talk about sachets. and by talk, we mean speaking slowly through gritted teeth as we try not to angrily shout… we’re professionals after all. It’s so great to see pubs & restaurants bustling again, we are the ultimate food lovers, so are thrilled that our restaurant partners are doing what they do best and serving great food. The problem though is that over the last 8 weeks we’ve seen a massive rise in the uptake of single use condiment sachets 😲 Which we think is totally unnecessary… in the name of hygiene, a ramekin would do the trick, or we have glass bottles that can be wiped down with anti-bac after use. When speaking to one pub group they said that many of their sachets often get thrown away without even being opened, as they were bought to a table, not used, then the waiting staff weren’t sure if they’ve been touched or not 😢 😢 So this is our plea to the industry – and we need your help to amplify. SACHET AWAY. Your customers care about the environment more than ever, so don’t be a tosser by adding to the billions of plastic sachets that head to landfill every year...sachet away. On September 28, 2020, leaders from within the County of Fresno and the Sheriff’s Office held a ceremony to break ground on a new Area Two Substation. The facility will be located on 6.5 acre parcel of land along N. Armstrong Ave., between Belmont and E. Harvey Avenues. It will feature 22,700 square feet of office space and a 35,500 square foot vehicle storage building. This Area Two Substation will serve as the headquarters for all patrol operations in the metropolitan area. The new facility will serve as a hub for patrol briefings, community meetings and a storage location for specialty unit vehicles and equipment that are deployed during emergency situations. The new complex will replace the current Area Two Substation located on Shields Ave., just east of Clovis Ave. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $14 million. Today is #WorldRangerDay, a day to honor the courage and dedication of those who are one the front lines of the battle for species conservation and against wildlife crime. We are fortunate to be able to rely on these courageous women and men who heed the call of nature and serve as the guardians of rainforests, reserves or national parks in every corner of the planet, under any climate or circumstance. Their work is truly vast: from keeping a close eye on critically endangered species, averting and minimizing human-animal conflicts in areas where people share the land with local fauna, to deterring or tracking down would-be poachers, rangers contribute to the well-being of entire ecosystems and the well-being of the people and wildlife they sustain. This is no easy task. It is a truly difficult and dangerous one. While it can be hazardous to work so close to nature, danger often comes from humans. For their role in combating poaching and other forms of wildlife crime, and because of their proximity to various conflict-prone areas harboring coveted species and resources, over 800 rangers have been killed in the course of their duties in the last decade. Despite mounting concerns from some teachers and parents about the safety of returning to schools in person, the #PaloAlto Board of Education voted unanimously late Tuesday evening to begin a staggered reopening of campuses on Oct. 12. Palo Alto Educators Association President Teri Baldwin told the board that the reopening plan feels rushed. Some parents also worried that choosing distance or in-person learning could mean their child will lose their teacher since the district will have to reassign staff to meet the needs of students in the different models. The district plans to form a committee of teachers from each elementary school to provide feedback on whats working and what isnt as campuses reopen. The district will first bring transitional kindergarten students through first-graders back to school in a hybrid model on Oct. 12, then second- and third-graders on Oct. 26 and fourth- and fifth-graders on Nov. 9. Middle and high schoolers will not return until January. We’d like to share an update about #SeanWorsley, a Black U.S. Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient originally arrested in #Alabama in 2016 on charges relating to possession of cannabis. That arrest turned into 60 months of trying to dig out of the probation trap--trying to meet the onerous terms of his release while avoiding technical violations that could send him to prison. Homelessness and joblessness resulting from the charge turned into a missed court date, then into an additional ‘absconding’ charge, rearrest, extradition, and sentencing. - When we originally highlighted Sean’s case in July, he had already been in jail in Arizona and Alabama since mid-January. The #AlabamaAppleseed Center for Law & Justice and his wife Eboni, @inspyredtofruition, worked to rally others to the case and Sean’s circumstances caught national attention, being reported by national outlets like @washingtonpost and @foxnews. - Because of (some of many) backward laws in Alabama, there is no executive clemency so the best bet was trying to convince the presiding judge to show Sean leniency. Thousands of people donated to Sean’s GoFundMe, and his supporters secured a home, a steady job, and pro bono counseling from an experienced therapist who specializes in treating #PTSD. - The judge, Samuel Junkin, denied the request to place Sean in community supervision. Instead, he will likely be imprisoned in a system the Trump Department of Justice noted routinely violates the 4th Amendment rights of incarcerated people until late 2021, assuming ‘good behavior.’ - There is systemic racism throughout our justice system--Black Americans are more likely to be stopped by police, to be arrested, to be charged, to have higher or no bail, to have charges “stacked” to compel a plea bargain, to be “overcharged” with severe crimes, to face longer prison sentences, to not have effective legal representation...the list goes on. - An appeal is in motion, but Sean would benefit from some direct communication. This World Humanitarian Day, we take a moment to appreciate and pay special tribute to the effort that real life heroes have been making to help others in the most extreme circumstances throughout the world. The ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been globally widespread, and felt at a grassroots level within our REDD+ project communities. At the frontline response in the Kasigau Corridor, Wildlife Works has been working closely with the Taita Taveta County Resource Mobilization Committee and the community to combat COVID-19. Assistance has included distributing face masks, handwashing stations and soap, as well as donating food to those in need. Id like to spotlight CD8’s very own Kristen Harvey, an administrative clerk for the Los Angeles Sanitation Department. Kristen was hired through the City’s Targeted Local Hire Program (TLH). In the spirit of highlighting Black women, I am showing love to Kristen for her commitment to serving the City of Los Angeles. Kristen heard about the TLH program from her mother and decided to apply. In her previous job, she experienced discrimination and realized that there was no room for her to promote beyond her role. According to Kristen, “TLH has been a great start for my career, and its changed things for the better. Im really happy this program was created to give people a chance to excel in life”. Kristen’s story represents the importance of investing in Black and Brown communities and through opportunities like the City’s TLH program. Congressmember Karen Bass @repkarenbass understands this reality and introduced the Jobs and Justice Act 2020, which includes several provisions to protect and strengthen Black American families with major provisions, including raising the national minimum wage to $15 an hour. A few weeks ago, we asked our giving community if they had a bathroom in their school growing up. 100% of individuals said yes. Now the students at Bentum Dreambuilders School can too! 🚾 To say our team had an ear-to-ear smile on our faces when we saw this difference would be an understatement. Before, 190 students and #teachers shared one wooden latrine in the middle of a field. With no privacy or handwashing stations, using the bathroom was extraordinarily unsanitary and uncomfortable, especially for girls. Today their brand new bathroom, you helped make possible, is almost finished and looking beautiful! ❤️ Something we may find so simple as a bathroom with a door and #cleanwater to wash our hands is a life-changing amenity for so many. Massive respect for @beardedvillainsargentina ・・・ ⚔ Charity⚔ Este pasado domingo cerramos la semana con otro festejo de Reyes pero en esta oportunidad en la localidad de Ezeiza en el barrio Los Troncos. Visitamos el @merenderolospiecitos donde a diario Romina y un pequeño grupo de colaboradoras (tambien madres de la comunidad) preparan la merienda para mas de 120 chicos, y asisten semanalmente a mas de 45 familias. Pasamos una hermosa tarde, compartimos la merienda con ellos y mientras los chicos comían las galletitas y budines que les llevamos, Pia les repartió unos regalos a las mamás (bijouterie). Un rato mas tarde (ya no los podíamos hacer esperar mas) llego el momento de repartir los regalos a mas de 100 niños desde bebes hasta chicos de 14 años. This past Sunday we closed the week with another celebration of Reyes but this time in the town of Ezeiza in the Los Troncos neighborhood. We visited the @merenderolospiecitos where Romina and a small group of collaborators (also mothers of the community) prepare the snack for more than 120 children, and attend more than 45 families weekly. We spent a beautiful afternoon, we shared the snack with them and while the boys ate the cookies and puddings that we took them, Pia gave some gifts to the moms (bijouterie). A while later (we could not make them wait any longer) it was time to distribute the gifts to more than 100 children from babies to 14 year olds. We also donate candy, non-perishable food, diapers, bookstore products, clothing, footwear, etc. to the picnic area. since weekly they distribute different products of basic need to each family, as well as giving school support to the little ones. Time + Tide Chinzombo has thought of every detail, including a Covid-Kit Welcome Amenity. And after sanitizing and getting our temps taken (a new daily staple of safari) it was welcome drinks, game drives, R&R at our villa’s private pool, curated cuisine, stunning sunsets and more. The team is overjoyed to welcome guests back and we spoke with a few others enjoying their long weekend on the South Luangwa River. My favorite was a multi-gen family; the Grandmother from DC had been working from home (“stuck” to use her word) and when she was told she would be until at least Jan 2021, so grabbed her laptop, got a three-month visa, and headed to Lusaka where her daughter (who works for the US embassy) and grandchildren are living … I’m with her! Zambia provides endless exploration in a safe expansive setting with activity, connectivity, and little bit of luxury! Hands to Empower An embriodery training workshop for unemployed, marginalised women was meant to be for 3 months but was cut short to 5 weeks due to Covid. With no stipend the women were initially hesitant to join. The only criteria to join was that it was meant for women who wanted to empower their own lives so they could learn/train and not wait for a dole. This journey turned into an amazing story of hope, resilience and faith of the human spirit in beating the odds of Covid.
