Our nation has seen conversations and demonstrations in response to years of inequality and oppression. As an organization that strives to create a better business environment for all, we have a responsibility to look critically at our work to ensure we support Black-owned and -led businesses and Black people in our community. . While the Economic Alliance has been active in diversity, inclusion and race issues, including public policy advocacy, business support programming and awareness initiatives, any honest assessment of our organization would show clearly that we have not done enough. We are committed to doing more and being better than we are. We also know that grand gestures and policy statements don’t mean anything without substantive actions, progress and results for years to come. . Our strategic plan has long called for civil and cooperative debate, and we stand with those who are peacefully protesting racism, hate and violence. We are here to be part of the solution. - @economicalliance on Instagram

This is a photo of the Ethanac Cash Store in the Ethanac community, which was named for Ethan Alan Chase a citrus grower in the area. Later the name was changed to Romoland to accurately reflect its proximity to the Ramola Farms community. A small sign shows it was also the post office and perhaps the small sign on the left is for a telegraph office, since the Menifee Siding was nearby at the railroad tracks. #menifeehistory - @menifeehistory on Instagram

{September 27th, 1948 -- First TV station in Texas goes on the air} On this day in 1948, WBAP-Fort Worth became the first television station in Texas--and indeed in the whole South--to go on the air, carrying a speech by President Harry Truman. The station grew out of Fort Worths first radio station, also called WBAP, established in 1922 by Amon Carter, owner of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. By 1950 six TV stations were operating in Texas, including three in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In the early 1950s stations in San Antonio and Fort Worth began broadcasting live programs by use of coaxial cable. In 1953 four major television networks served Texas: the American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and Dumont. In that year network broadcasting was made possible across the state via Bell Telephone System facilities. This residence at 20 Margaret Street in St. Thomas was owned by Alfred John Allworth, a former resident of St. Thomas, who died in this home on February 17, 1897. He was married to Jane Kettlewell, who passed away in 1860, and his second wife was Mary Ann Claris, who died in 1875. Allworth was born in Westbury, Wiltshire, England on June 12, 1820 and immigrated on the Cosma with his family in April 1830, arriving in New York, before joining family, who had previously immigrated and settled, in Southwold Township (the Silcox family). His family settled on a farm in Frome, Ontario. In circa 1840s, Allworth moved to St. Thomas to work as a clerk for Edward Ermatinger. When the London and Port Stanley Railway was established, Allworth was appointed as station agent and worked in this position for 15 years. He later became the first manager of the Canada Southern Loan Company, and remained in this position for 21 years, until his health forced him to resign five years before his death in 1897.
