My first rejection slip! 1966. Beverly Sky (who is now my best friend of more than 50 years) and I were counselors at Blue Mountain Camp. After the kids were asleep, we’d sit on the porch of our cabin, smoke weed, and write (me) and illustrate (her) our opus, Grimm Tales for Fairy Children. I recently found this in some old papers and tacked it up on my wall because I love thinking about those two girls who were just excited about making art. It didn’t matter that our book was silly, that no one in their right mind would ever want to read it, let alone publish it. What mattered was that we were wading into the waters of creativity and we liked it there. Beverly was already living the life of an artist. She was my first role model and inspiration that I could also live that life. I don’t think we were discouraged by the rejection. The fact that someone—even “the rejection slip sender”—thought our work was “a groove,” was validation enough. I wish I’d saved all my rejection slips over the years so I could come into a workshop and dump a dozen big garbage bags filled with them into the middle of the floor! 👄 “I have no words. The only sounds I make, are moans.”👄 As always, thanks for being a passenger on this crazy trip that is my life. Today was a 😃 fantastic day! I’m so glad that you are here to share it with me as I reflect. So many things made me moan today. I went into the city (Toronto). I ❤️ going into the city. I ❤️ the energy. I ❤️ the way the city feels. It’s as if everyone is alone yet together all at the same time. It’s magical. Not sure if you know, but I use a fake name when strangers ask me who I am. It all started with Starbucks. I rarely go to Starbucks, but whenever I went, the lovely barista could never spell my name. So one day when she asked, “your name please?” and I replied “Lola”. Lola, is now my name for a variety of things from making dinner reservations to ordering Pizza for delivery. Why do I mention this? Well, today, I ordered some French desserts for a birthday dinner. I travelled several hours to a special bakery after having ordered a raspberry tart 🥧 in advance. I was so taken with the artistry behind the glass display case that I left, not only with the tart, but also, with 12 other desserts ranging from lemon 🍋 to pear 🍐 to chocolate 🍫 mousse (and we all know how I feel about chocolate mousse 💧 💧💧 ). When I was leaving, I asked the young girl who had helped me what her name was…. Yup…. you guessed it…her name was Lola. So, Thank you Lola! You saved the day! Your passion for, and knowledge of the delicacies, temporarily transported me to my home in Paris. Specifically to a petite patisserie on Avenue de Saxe in the 7th arrondissement. I was so enamoured with the chef’s artwork, I had to stop on the way home and sample one of the tarts (it’s missing from the photos). So, I moan. #Thankyouforreading I appreciate each and every one of you for taking the time to look at my photos and read my words as the mess continues to spill from my heart and soul. This is a quote I’ve resonated with for a long time. For some reason, it didn’t read as elegant or punchy as I’d like it to for a post on here. But I just came across it again, and it was exactly what I needed to read, so I wanted to share it with you here incase it’s exactly what you need to read, too. And it’s funny, because I feel that I found a way to work with it and now I see it with fresh eyes. I want to be honest with you all and let you know I’m struggling personally with some stuff. Lately, I wonder if I’m strong enough to handle it all. I share you these messages as a way to process my own emotions, overcome my own traumas, get through the day, like the rest of all of you here with me in this community. There is a weird, somewhat hidden line I’ve learned where my mindfulness or “spirituality” becomes a form of repression and spiritual bypassing. I’m trying to find the sweet spot where I feel this pain in its entirety and stare it in the face, every last bit, and then find a way to let it go. To be honest, I’m still searching for that spot. But I do know I have spent a lot of time as of late, while technically in a lovely state to be (such as my bed, with my partner), crying about my “life situation”. And while I want to lean into the present moment and free myself from my thoughts, I’m also trusting myself to let myself be in pain, because pain in this life is inevitable. As my Mom always said, “you gotta get in to get out.” So, I’m in it, and I hope I’ll be out soon. But in the meantime I’m searching for the lessons this pain is teaching me and letting it show me where I’m stuck. Sending you all love 💙 - @subliming.jpg on Instagram

But that damn dirty road is where I learned that boys know how to lie...that boys take joy in making pretty girls cry. You said your arms were heavy, said you were done. That I was too good, swore there was no one...else. But I knew. It wasn’t true. There are roses blooming now. Back amongst the trees. And when I go home I think of you, when I can smell them in the breeze and I wonder what made such a beautiful boy decide that breaking me into pieces was the the best way to hide a fucking change of mind. The second slide is the original poem I wrote in 10th grade about a boy who broke my heart. Clearly I still harbor some unresolved issues over it. Clara asked me what was my idea of love. I have to say that someone that never heard about my thoughts on this topic randomly gave me once sparkling water as a present in the morning. It actually worked. According to me, love is strictly connected to a mans behaviour towards bottles of water. A letter to my younger self and to all the people trying to pursue the things they love. • Always take time to do what you love. Taking pictures, dancing, painting, acting, etc. once a week? Twice a month? Doesn’t matter. As long as you do not forget about doing it. And don’t be sad if your day job is different from your passion. The work that feeds your body doesn’t have to be the same from the one that feeds your soul. Just keep on creating. Your personal projects are the core of your work. Even if you’re the only one who are able to see them. Even if no one likes them. You can never tell when will your audience come. 10 years, 20 years, tomorrow or never. You’ll never know.
