7 weeks ago we happily (& unexpectedly) welcomed a new member to our gay chicken farm! We are foster parents. We’ve had a love/hate relationship with our experience. The system is hard especially for artists. Artists are free thinkers, dreamers, rule breakers, change makers. The system is rules, regulations, checks & balances, red tape. Yet, caught in the middle of art & politics are over 21,000 children in LA County in need of homes, safe spaces, parents, guardians, gay chicken farmers—that’s us. So once again, we go charging into the red tape abyss as we attempt to make our loving family...legal. We are not heroes. Far from it. We are normal dads. Let’s not make foster parenting “heroic”. Let’s stop that. Because the word “hero” separates us. Makes things feel impossible when they are, in fact, entirely possible. The only thing that seems impossible to me is how lucky we are to be raising two of the most beautiful boys. Trust me, they’re really beautiful. Father’s Day I believe all my days with you were your day. At first some of those days were beach days. Then they were arcade days. Days when you took all your children Disneyland. What it means you could help me keep my eyes on the prize... You know I cannot ignore everything I see you would remind me that I am a great lover and greater fighter. But sometimes, it is better to do nothing but focus on the better days that have yet to come. On the heavy days, you taught me to take care of myself, but its hard because I see myself in many people. I see I am daughter of many daughters. I am sister to siblings I can’t sister.
