Recently, one of CCLTs board members came across a most fantastic creature at Broad Cove Reserve- a Lions Mane Jelly Fish! This beauty was about 4 across, not including the tentacles! If you happen to come across one of these amazing creatures, or any for that matter, we ask that you respect its space and do not touch. Swimmers and others should use caution when they come upon the buoyant blobs as they will sting! What have you found at CCLTs Property of the Week, Broad Cove Reserve? #ccltmaine - @chebeaguecumblandtrust on Instagram

Arquitectura primitiva. Hermit crabs, unlike most crabs, do not grow their own shells. Instead, they search for shells among their environment, switching to larger homes as they grow. Sadly, plastic pollution has become so pervasive, that hermit crabs are now living in our trash. 💔 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ These plastic homes are lightweight and plentiful, making them an easier modern option for new hermit-homebuyers than the old school mollusk house. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While these little crabs are making the most of a dismal situation, what they dont know is that as this plastic ages, it will become brittle and sharp from photodegradation, and is scientifically proven to be toxic to wildlife. I’d like you to take a moment to appreciate the beauty that are Lined Chitons (Tonicella lineata). You’ll find these benthic mollusks in the Pacific intertidal and subtidal zones from southern Alaska to southern California. Chitons have 8 valves (plates) which protect their soft underside. They slowly graze diatoms and coralline algae, when knocked off rocks they roll into a ball for protection. These guys are another small species - they only reach 5cm in length, so if you spot one you’ve got a great eye! - - #linedchiton #tonicellalineata #shellfish #mollusca #oceandiscovery #intertidal #subtidal #tidepools #alaskacoast #oregoncoast #californiacoast - @yourdailyshellfish on Instagram
