6am in the morning, 4 feet of snow outside, and you cant see i still have my flipflops on. These young men were part of a football team (US style). Chris Korfist was organising my workshops, so we would do teaching on the weekends, some client sessions during the week and these. Speaking and sharing with schools around the Chicago area to show them what was possible and how to find more in themselves as individuals and as a team. As good team mates you can see the joy they expirience with one of there team mates discomfort. These sessions always had so much reward for me, as there is the possibility that we may be there at just the right time to inspire someone to do great things, or to help guide someone out of a tough place. Almost exactly two years ago, I was arrested at the Capitol protesting President Trumps nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court—one sexual abuser giving another a lifetime job, with the power to rule over our workplaces, our environment, our bodies. We got on the bus at 4am that morning and gathered in D.C. at a church, where we were fed by members of the community and prepped for direct action by movement vets. Then we pulled our bikes off the bus and rode to the Hart Senate building. At the Capitol, I met people from all over the country, of all ages and backgrounds. Everyone was generous and kind and wanted to share their stories of what had brought them. Many were women who had traumas not so different than my own. When we were arrested, we were taken to the basement of the Senate building and put on a bus. For the next few hours, I sat next to women in jail, sharing our stories and our vision for a more loving world. I was so inspired and so relieved to find that I was not alone ut part of an enormous movement of women who had found their power and their voice. The next day, on the bus back home, I felt changed. I came to profoundly understand, deep in my heart, that for all the power they had—and they did win that fight—we have it too. Now, two years later, fresh off of threatening a coup, our racist tax cheat president and his party of corporate mercenaries are planning to push through the confirmation of a new justice who will gut healthcare, empower bosses, entrench private power and overturn Roe vs. Wade. We need to push the Democratic leadership in the Senate to pull out all the stops—before and during the confirmation process, and when, hopefully, the party retakes power in January. That includes expanding the number of justices, just as FDR threatened to do when the Supreme Court tried to dismantle the New Deal. But its also going to require persistent, disciplined, nonviolent civil disobedience to defend the rights we have struggled for and won, and secure the new social and economic rights that well need for a livable future. - @em4assembly on Instagram
