I spent the majority of my young adult life trying to prove to myself and everyone around me that I’m not too much. Ironically hearing “too much” made me feel like I would never be enough for anyone, especially me. I know today after a lot of self-study and actively listening to criticism whether it be constructive or destructive that the person that gets to dictate my life is me. Sometimes it’s hard to hear the truth and there have been many people in my life that cared enough about me and themselves to tell me their truth about how they saw/see me. I’m grateful for all of the feedback and now that I know what I know, get to shift that feedback into a space that will raise the vibration no matter how much. I get to discern the truth. I’m going back, connecting the dots, and just like Steve Jobs stated get to connect them as I keep looking forward to the future. A future that will include working with kids, starting my healing practice in a new city, and doing my best to leave this world a better place wherever it takes me. Let’s talk double-cleansing🤔✨ . Together with the advancement of makeup product that are meant to last longer on your skin, the cleansing method also evolve together with it. This is how double-cleansing was born and popularized for the past decade . The most common and original method is: oil-based cleanser followed by water-based cleanser. The oil cleanser attracts oil-based product and dirt, melts away makeup with minimal chance of irritating your skin, it is followed by the second step water-based cleanser to remove residual product, impurities. Just think of it as double-ing the process (with gentler products twice) so that you don’t have to do an overly-stripping single product that can damage your skin barrier. . However, it is not the only way you can do your double cleansing as long as you the cleansing process twice (no matter which product), it is called double cleansing. Whichever method you pick out of all the options, in the end, the main goal is to remove long-wear makeup, dirt, excess sebum and sweat off your skin in the gentlest way possible . Double-cleansing is not a well-studied field in the literature, but has been practically loved by so many person for their effectiveness in removing makeup / sunscreen and improvement in non-inflammatory acne (especially whiteheads). However, it is not for everyone where they experienced more tightness or clogged pores after double-cleansing. There are other factors that should be taken into consideration and you should always watch out as a red-flag of cleansing . It is hard to generalized the rule and point out whether if one method is better than the other when there are tons of formulations out there with different variables of lifestyle. Looking to start leading a low tox life but not sure where to begin? Start with eliminating phthalates, known endocrine disrupters of which there are a few different types in the “family”. Now I say “too often” because I’m a realist. You’re going to be in a public restroom one day with the unavoidable “psssht” deodorizing sprays in there. A taxi might have one of those horrible dangly air “fresheners” (ironic name!!) 100% avoidance leads to freak outs so let’s just do our best, right? Phthala-what now? Phthalates, are a ‘plasticizer compound’ that make fragrances last longer and they make certain plastics uber bendy / soft / stretchy – think of those kids goopy coloured gels and ‘ monster slime’ from a toy shop or a cheap puzzle play mat or a PVC raincoat or contact paper or vinyl flooring (not all new vinyl flooring though so check with manufacturer). Phthalates are used in hundreds of consumer products – too many to list but consider the range from raincoats to nail polish to conditioners, scented candles, yoga mats and even cute little rubber duckies. Sure, not all variants of these things contain them, but most do. I thought I’d share a few more reasons why you shouldn’t want them near you – let alone in stuff you put on or in your body. This was taken on my first day of seeing patients completely on my own as a second year optometry student. By the looks of it, I was probably taking 30 seconds just to set myself up to do confrontation fields 🙌🏻 I used to really dislike this photo. It reminds me of how anxious I used to be in clinic with preceptors watching over you, trying to perform the exam as fast as I could without missing any retinal holes or hemes, while trying to answer the clinical questions that your preceptor is throwing at you randomly. Now, I embrace this photo that captured my awkward moment. I have grown as a clinician and found my groove. Not only I can be efficient but also learn the story of my patients. 🗣 Course correction. Was originally tagged into this challenge not knowing the origin (it still made me happy to be a part of it, to tag others to join in, to honor/enjoy each other, and also see everyones faces because hello, pandemic) but Ive since learned its an extremely charged campaign meant to bring awareness to Turkeys high femicide rate and to help gain traction for meaningful legislative change (i.e. full implementation of the Istanbul Convention, which aims to tackle violence against women, domestic abuse, as well as promote gender equality). The email I’d dreaded: “Thanks for a great training. I didn’t buy this time but maybe in the future I’ll pay for your next family vacation.” AKA the guilt-trip implying, “How dare you enjoy yourself & make money when you’re selling to everyday people who aren’t gazillionaires?” The truth is, in the beginning, I did feel that guilt. ...Its why I gave scholarships to anyone who told me they knew my course would change their life but they just didn’t have the money ...And obsessively checked my email so I could respond to private clients within a few hours (or less) ...And let people get away with not paying their payments when they said, “If you really cared, you wouldn’t make me pay” Funny thing is, none of that actually helped. ...The people I gave scholarships to, who’d promised that they would use the course, didn’t even bother to log in ...My private clients began to expect that I’d be at their beck and call ...And I’d see those people who claimed to be struggling post pictures of their latest trip or newest designer handbag So as I learned from the School of Experience: What that guy who emailed me didn’t, and probably won’t ever, understand, is that he got it completely wrong. **Your clients aren’t paying for *your* life. They’re paying for their own.** Because no matter what it is you’re selling -- a service, a course, or a physical product -- there’s something about your product that your client wants. For example… ...I buy a course because I want what the information inside it will help me do. ...I buy a handbag because I like the way I feel when I carry it. ...I hire a coach because I want the support, guidance, and faster results that coaching can help me get. Plus, your clients are smart. And no one can force or *trick* them into buying something they don’t want. Which means: The money you get paid? You deserve it. And you fully get to use it however you want. Because you’ve earned it. Through the time and work you had to put in to be able to deliver that product. I’m not usually someone who remembers to celebrate wins, because I always get too caught up in thinking of the next step, of pushing forwards. It’s that go go go mentality. There’s always so much to do, and so little time, and I never feel like I’m doing enough if I’m not constantly being productive. Does that sound familiar to you too? But recently, I’ve been trying to take a step back, even though I will admit that this came from a place of me being really close to burning out, and realizing that it just isn’t sustainable. It still feels a little weird saying this because of how I’ve been brought up to think... But sometimes, we need to acknowledge what we’ve accomplished, so that we can be inspired and motivated once again to work towards those goals we’ve set for ourselves. It’s also a reminder that our value is so much more than the milestones we’re able to achieve. So I wanted to take the time to say that this really exciting thing happened! For all those who have been following me on YouTube, thank you so much for your support during these past couple months. It really means the world to me to see the impact I’m able to make and to help build a community that inspires me as much as I hope to inspire them. 🙏 In case you were wondering, I celebrated with a really nice meal from @joespizzanyc and then I bought um, 6 new @gudetama shirts from @uniqlo , so... Hello pals this is the cringiest thing that I have ever done in my life but please hear me out!! I really enjoy creating videos and it really makes me excited to come up video ideas and see them come alive. This will always be my favourite hobby and something that I am happy doing for fun!! However, I realised that by posting videos on my main IG account, my feed is messy and there is not really any way to categorise my videos or sort them out. I’m nominated for the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce “Resilient New Business Award”🏅! I know I will be up against many big players in town, but I am honestly just happy to be a part of the game (and I deserve to 😊). Realizing the impact on local small businesses at the start of the pandemic and lockdown, I decided to quit my advertising sales job in Mid-March to develop a more cost-effective marketing option for local small business owners. Noticing most local businesses had to cut advertising budgets and had since started to post more often on social media, I knew I could help them to optimize their efforts and maximize the effect. Determined to share my knowledge and expertise, yet adapting applicable strategies to the Yellowknife market, I started working with some wonderful clients in July. I also have the honour to host an “Instagram Marketing for Your Business” webinar with the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce. Although I am a brand new business, I believe I have everything it takes to at least be nominated for the “Resilient New Business Award”. This award is presented to a new business that has demonstrated an ability to adapt to the challenges local business owners faced due to the global pandemic.
