This is me being the change I want to see. Growing up, I’ve always hated my legs and would very rarely wear shorts. In pictures, I would always edit out the scars and spots on my legs because I just found it horrible (many have helped made me believe so). It took a while, but now I am ready to take another step to embrace my body - scars and all. Decided to not edit out my scars so that someone out there who might share the same insecurity as myself see that there is someone like them. I always wished I saw more celebrities, public figures, or just people in general who has “strawberry legs” or “koreng” all over their legs / body so that I wouldn’t feel so ugly. In all honesty, it took a lot to make this post but I’m happy I decided to. This is me being that someone my younger self wished she could’ve looked up to. Diet culture wants you to stay frozen in time. I guess its time to break the news that the only body that does not change is a dead one. I mean, not to get all morbid on you but these are straight up facts! My dear, your body changing is sign that you are LIVING. Why are we always trying to eradicate any sign of life? These should be celebrated as milestones! And for the mama whos given birth and struggling with postpartum body image - you are good enough. On day 7 of my recovery, I slipped up. It’s been hard. I know this prolonged lockdown in Australia is necessary to save lives, but there’s no denying the mental health toll it is taking on everyone. I tried to fight my ED. But then I accidentally looked at food labels, and then from there it sort of spiralled out of control. I exercised even though I was experiencing hip pain, I slipped back into some food restriction habits, and all of this triggered some pretty bad impulsive, harmful habits from the BPD side of things (I’m not quite ready to talk about it yet). I know it sounds strange. I had to actively put on workout gear and exercise. I had to actively push through pain. I had to walk to my destination to do those harmful things. I am fully aware of what I’m doing, but at the same time... not? I feel like my life is out of control, this is the only way I can be in control, and I don’t want to stop myself. And after it all passes, it feels horrible, and I feel sick with guilt. Like I failed, and there is no point to it all. But I have not failed. Relapses happen. Recovery is never linear, and I learned something: that working out is probably not the best option for me right now, because it’s too easy for ED to take over me and over-exercise, to the point of injury. And I have, several times in the past two years. If you relapse, you have not failed. It is hard to fight a battle with your own mind. Look after yourself, be gentle with yourself. Nurture every emotion you feel, whether that’s guilt or anger, don’t try to force it all down. Pick yourself up, because tomorrow is another day, another chance. You have not fallen all the way back to day one, this is just part of the process. Your relapses will become fewer, and it WILL become easier. It was never going to be easy. You need more than 1200 calories people!!!!!!! I’ve seen so many “what I eat in a day” videos where people eat less than 1000 calories. Then people comment “I think you need to eat more”, to which others will respond “everyone’s body is different”. Yes, we all have different bodies and lifestyles. We all have varying energy needs. But unless you’re a literal toddler, you need more than 1200 calories. Why that’s become this arbitrary “calorie” goal for so many is beyond me. For most people, 1200 calories barely is enough to sustain proper bodily function just laying down and doing nothing. Adding exercise and daily activity increases those needs even more. Your metabolism down-regulates when you continuously don’t give your body enough food. It extends less energy so you can stay alive!!! And you often have a ton of unwanted side effects such as: ◾️ Feeling tired and weak ◾️ Cognitive impairment ◾️ Digestion problems ◾️ Hormonal issues ◾️ Low sex drive ◾️ Losing your menstrual cycle And so much more. Your body needs adequate fuel!!! Not giving it what it needs puts you at risk for many health complications and lower quality of life. Food is your FRIEND. Not your enemy. I get it. Youre not as active as night and will be heading to bed, so consuming carbs which will increase insulin, will lead to fat storage. The problem with this viewpoint is that it doesnt take into consideration the most important variable when it comes to fat loss... CALORIES. You could eat all your calories and carbs at dinner if you wished and as long as your energy expenditure exceeded your intake, wed see fat loss. Now could the timing of your carbs and meals INDIRECTLY affect fat loss by impacting performance and appetite regulation? Yes. But this still comes down to energy balance. For the majority of people, who arent athletes, basing your meal and nutrient timing on what will personally help you regulate your intake is likely a smart idea. Ironically, I find that a lot of clients often see better results by slightly backloading their calories and carbs to the evening when: 1. They can have a family meal and not have to eat something different. 2. Theyre tired and are more likely to lapse. However at this time we don’t have a lack of community... we have a lack of genuine & authentic deep penetrating connection that makes us feel whole. So when we get lonely we typically settle for people as place holders to get a quick void fix, to instantly make our wounds feel better... but when we choose to dissect where our loneliness stems from more than likely we’ll learn it’s not a person we’re missing but one of voids that need our own attention, acknowledgment, hugs, positive energy, & love. We seek outside sources & validation when we want to avoid the pain that comes with acknowledging at the core of us WHY we feel lonely. I used to beat up on myself when I realized I was in an unhealthy marriage, I spiraled for hours trying to analyze how and why I “picked” (parenthesis because so much of this is unconscious when you haven’t done your inner work), that man and feeling like it was my fault so I should try to make it work, or felt ashamed for being in that situation in the first place. It’s not your fault, there’s so many factors in how and why you’re in this situation. But you can start to heal and get the clarity you need to move forward. I read this quote and it made so much sense, if you think about it. Working out is honestly not a task for people, going to the gym is. Eating healthy is not a task, planning meals is. Working hard is not a task, setting a system is. And once you realise it and work on setting rituals to just perform these hard things rest becomes easy for you. 🦷 Kids don’t have the motor skills to consistently and effectively brush until around age 7. 🦷Just because they have the ability, does not mean they can be relied upon to USE this skill unsupervised on a consistent basis; while many children understand theoretically why it is important to brush, practically, they are more focused on other things (like playing) than mindfully brushing each tooth well. 🦷If your child is below the age of 5, YOU should be brushing their teeth twice a day. It’s fine if they want to brush before or after you do, but YOU should be doing it each time, as well. 🦷If your child is 5 or older, TAKE TIME TO TRAIN THEM on how to brush, and then allow them to brush once a day. Usually, this is mornings in our house, as there are time constraints/schedules to maintain. But—ONCE A DAY—it is YOU brushing for them that will help truly keep cavities away. 🦷For even older kids, add in the factor of orthodontic appliances like expanders and wires. These make brushing infinitely more challenging, even for adults. For kids, it’s an impossible ask, & is another reason why the PARENT should be brushing for their kiddo well into their elementary years at least once a day. Many parents don’t feel they have the time to brush their kids’ teeth. However, I implore you to understand it isn’t about the short-term. We as parents are playing the long game. Loving on yourself in the way you love on others is actually a pretty crazy feeling at first. I found it icky. A little bit cringe. I found it difficult and embarrassing to tell myself I looked good, to treat myself and book little trips away alone and lie in bed with myself and try to feel as though I was whole without a partner lying next to me. To eat in restaurants on my own and practice not feeling like half a person. To not only ‘endure’ being single as though it was just something I had to get through, but really relish in it. Soak it up. Celebrate it. Dance around in the ecstasy of having nobody to answer to, nobody else to care for, all this love to give and only me to give it to. It takes some serious adjusting, but once you start to get comfortable with single life by accepting it as a beautiful opportunity for some serious growth - then the magic happens. You can begin harnessing the ridiculous power it brings into all areas your life. You can fully commit to yourself in ways you’d never even considered before - because you were always too busy looking ‘out there’ to find other people to commit to instead. We’ve be told for 50 years that we need a more plant-based diet. If we reduced animal fats and cholesterol, we could eliminate heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Americans fell in line with these guidelines and reduced consumption of eggs, dairy and beef by over 35%. The result was no change in heart disease and epidemic increases in obesity, diabetes, and over 40 million Americans taking statin drugs. CDC mortality data for C0V1D-19 shows that 94% of the deaths occurred in older adults with 2.6 comorbidities of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and breathing problems. It’s important to realize that Americans already get over 70% of their calories from plant-based foods but the calories are coming from sugar, oils and refined grains. We don’t need a diet with more plant-based foods, we need diets with better plants. Muscles and a healthy body composition requires creating an optimal balance of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and calories. Broccoli can be part of that solution but the best and most efficient way to do that is with a balance of animals and plants. Animal-based foods provide a nutrient-dense food that is not easily replaced with plant-based items. Meat provides over 7g of high-quality protein in every ounce while broccoli contains about 2.5 g of lower quality protein per cup. If your goal is to get 35 g of high-quality protein at each meal (which you need in order to protect your muscle health and body composition), you can do that with 5 oz of meat... but it would require 14 cups of broccoli and the balance of essential amino acids in the broccoli would still not be equal to the meat. Let’s not confuse the great qualities of broccoli with the great qualities of meat, eggs, and dairy. Vegan Caesar Wraps; My friend @michenbaum made this when we went camping a couple weekends ago. And Im obsessed. These are sooo easy and delicious, and here is how I made them; I used coconut flour tortillas GF Romaine Lettuce Avocado Cashew Crema (recipe is 15 posts ago) And the best discovery Ive made thru Michaela vegan parmesan; 1/2 cup of pepitas 1/4 cup of nutritional yeast 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp sea salt or himalayan salt Blend it all Chop romaine and mix in the cashew crema and vegan parmesan, scoop into your tortillas avo on top and a little more parmesan on top and voila ✨ These are so easy and delicious for a hot summer day 💋 - @hunbunskitchen on Instagram

Here’s the thing about food: we have to eat. Repeatedly, for our entire lives. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. There are immense barriers in place for so many people, from the intentional isolation of communities barring them from access to affordable food (see: food aparthied) to economic concerns to circumstances that force people to make tough decisions for daily survival. If this hasn’t occurred to you or you’ve never experienced it, it’s a sign of the privilege you hold in this area. I mistakenly used the term “food deserts” as if it were unavoidable or natural for neighborhoods to lack a single grocery store that is feasible to get to. That’s wrong because it’s very much intentional. It was designed that way. Flip to the opposite end of the spectrum where people consciously commit to eliminating entire food groups, fasting because it’s fashionable, or traveling far and wide to source specialty or premium ingredients. When I say I’m an anti-diet dietitian, it doesn’t mean I want to limit people or that I’m against their ability to choose this - I mean that I’m against the systems and culture that defines this as the epitome of health and challenges everyone to reach for what may be an unattainable or undesired standard - @streetsmart.rd on Instagram

No shame to those of you currently taking a fiber supplement. There are several circumstances (ie looking to lower cholesterol, having trouble meeting fiber needs, certain IBS cases, etc) for which I might recommend one. That being said, if you’re thinking of taking a fiber supplement because you heard it’s a miracle carb (I mean TBH it kind of is) that can help you lose weight, why not try food sources first? Can’t hurt, right? • 🥣 1 Tbsp of chia seeds has a whopping 5 grams of fiber. Beans are cheap, fiber-rich, & provide satiating protein, too. • 🥑Everyone thinks of avocado as *just* a healthy fat source but did you know it’s also packed with fiber? Seriously one avocado has 13 grams of fiber! 🤯 • 🍓Most berries are an excellent fiber source, but raspberries are the real fiber MVP here. 1 cup packs 8 grams. • 🌱Almost all plant proteins provide fiber. Why is it so hard to believe that food is medicine? The research clearly shows the relationship between eating refined, processed, high sugar, high carb, poor fat composition foods and diseases like those listed here and many more, but in my experience training at some of the country’s top medical institutions I experienced this massive resistance from our medical community to prescribing food as medicine. If food can be clearly identified as the problem, why can’t we double down on it as the solution? As a practicing doctor I have seen over and over in my patients and the tens of thousands of patients my colleagues have seen @parsleyhealth how eliminating foods you are allergic to can put autoimmune disease into remission, how eliminating refined sugar and processed foods can reverse high blood sugar, PCOS and depression, how what you eat impacts sleep which impacts everything else, how processed low-fiber foods can be replaced with high fiber, high plant-based, high nutrient dense foods that turn heart disease around… Even how nutrition and supplementation can help women get pregnant naturally. It’s time to bring food to the prescription pad alongside drugs. Medications are important tools. Foods when prescribed with precision and science are too. And I don’t mean the lip service we give in medicine to “eating healthy” which is toothless and amorphous.. The word health is used so lightly for something that is really so complex. Health looks different for everyone, and all of us have our own health journey to be on. We may have similar experiences, but ultimately its our own life to lead. Optimising health from our diets is important to prevent chronic diseases and such, but theres no use for that if your outlook on health from the perspective of food is something you struggle with every day. It is necessary to promote healthful and nourishing diets, but it is as necessary if not more important to make sure that you have a positive relationship with food first, which is also, a form of health. Youll realise youve reached that stage when one day youre at a meal with your famiy or friends, and youre not stressing about how many calories it is, what macros it consists of, and whether its good enough. Studies show, 2 months of consistent work can turn into an everyday habit. Wealthy people have successful habits. A habit of mines is getting up early and reading. I can’t watch TV or play a video game to save my life... if it doesn’t make money, it doesn’t make sense to me. I eat, sleep, and breathe hustle. Please don’t come in the comments with the “my friend makes money playing video games”... I’m aware it’s possible but it not for me. Break bad habits and develop new ones. This time of the year is when I get deep into the trenches. I like to work hard when I know everyone else is chillin. Don’t wait until New Years to change. Start now.
