Continuing my mini Guston show in light of the lamentable cancellation of the actual exhibition by an appallingly politically correct museum establishment, this is another one of the small panels, from 1968. I am trying to show you rarely seen works, and this is one, albeit a great one. As PG clearly explained, they’re up to no good, they’re evil, BUT: they’re also self portraits, not only of the artist but of American society as a whole, with everything this implies (racism, violence, white suprematism). Yet they are grotesque self portraits, and the grotesque is never far from the irony, the best weapon of destruction there is against racial bias. Does it take rocket science to get that? I rest my head in the expanse of silky neon orange, and in the willowing rapid of poppies, there was no virus at all. No panic. Even with my eyes closed the fluorescence trailed like smokey blood inside my eyelids. I remember the fundamentals of life and of how it’s always been in times before these. In a high planes drifter lifestyle, on the frontier of discovery. After hours of being amongst the flowers, I felt pollinated by a calm simplicity with two of my great loves dancing around me like cosmic electrons. I let it all go there. Who I thought I needed to be. Who people expected me to be. The idea of achievement or goal. Money. Rent. Car. It all went away for an afternoon in a sunny field, dancing to the music of the gusty coastal winds. And when that dusk sun disappeared beneath horizon, casting pastel hues across the alien space craft clouds, I remember my finite time here can be spent in marvel at the easy wonders this beautiful existence has to offer. To see the majesty of a sun setting in everyone and everything we do. Anyone is allowed to drive an hour up the 405 to enjoy the California state flower and fall in love with life and themselves all over again. Please. Responsibly, don’t let your fear get the best of you. Thank you, everyone, for all the birthday wishes. “Scared Stiff”, 1970 So gutted to see the Tate and three major museums in the U.S. cancel the massive Guston retrospective that was meant to open next summer. It’s particularly frustrating to see the Tate Modern cancel out of a supposed sense of moral concern, while at the same time laying off 300 people in the middle of a pandemic. It shows a lack of priorities and ultimately, considering this was an attempt to salvage their image, just makes them look even worse. If that was truly the concern then there are some genuinely problematic painters whose works still hang in museums. Emile Nolde was actually a Nazi and Gauguin’s paintings, which “exoticise” and sexualise young Tahitian girls can still be seen by the public. Not to mention the fact that the Tate has a blockbuster Picasso exhibition every few years (if you really want to talk about problematic artists and imagery). To target Guston, a committed anti-racist and socialist, who proved so through his life and his work, is such a misfire. There could not be a more appropriate time to see Guston’s work than now and these institutions have really blown their chance to hold an intelligent exhibition that asks for accountability, both of itself and its audience. So who are you actually protecting? Guston 4ever. @guy_maestri has been selected as a finalist in the @artgalleryofnsw Wynne Prize. About his shortlisted work, Maestri says: There is an immense old sheep station in Wilcannia (north-western NSW) where I go to paint from time to time. In the homestead’s front-yard is a grand old cactus garden. All attempts at its upkeep were abandoned years ago and it is being reclaimed by its harsh surrounding landscape. It is somehow unsettling and represents an extraordinarily slow dance between man and nature. It gives me a sense of the persistent march of time, of our often-futile attempts at controlling our environment. It also inspired this painting – the first I have ever made from memory. 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 Helloo 🌿Boon put out a new record today. It’s dedicated to my friend Mark Bevilacqua who lost his life in an accident during the Summer of 2015. I met Mark in 7th grade. We played in the orchestra together, ran track together, went to the same college, and played together in AU jazz band. Every Wednesday night after jazz we would eat dinner together at our school’s dining hall. Mac and cheese night. Our friendship was quiet, private and a unique comfort to me. Mark was incredibly kind and gentle. The last picture is a photo of him I’ve always loved. ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️ These songs began in 2015, evolved over the next few years, traveling from DC to New York, New Jersey, and eventually to Philadelphia. The songs grapple with loss of life, new life, time slipping by silently, growing away from what you know, and shapeshifting self doubt. Making this album with @iamsherriebaby and @desolation__ray is something Ill never forget. 🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃 The centerpiece of this record is a couplet of songs called “After Mark” and “Mark.” The first was written the day Mark passed in 2015 and was a direct response to the devastation of losing a friend. The following song just titled “Mark” is a celebration of Mark’s life and an acknowledgement of the light that he brought to me and so many others. These songs have been kicking around in our heads for almost five years and I’m so happy to have finally gotten them right. Thank you to @thecradlemusic for recording, to @iamsherriebaby for mixing, to @carlsaff for mastering, to @baileyelderberry for the artwork, to @jazmaniandeviledegg and @mjrbmmr for releasing, to @vvoody_ray for the music video, to @julia.leiby for the photos, and to all of you for listening. Today I turn ✨23✨ I woke up to a beautiful breakfast cooked by my housemate, then my doorbell rang all day with deliveries of food, flowers, cards from my friends, then we finished with a Zoom mini-games night. My heart and stomach are so full. I rate lockdown birthdays 4 out of 5 stars. This year I want to learn how to take it slow and do less. One of my ways of coping with the pandemic has been to throw myself into work. Seeing those around me (I work at a university) lose their jobs has been so heartbreaking and scary, and my anxious mind convinced me that I needed to say yes to everything, just in case. But overcommitting has made me feel exhausted and Im not able to do everything with my full energy or presence. Once my next round of deadlines have passed, I cant wait to have a day of doing nothing or losing myself to a 1000-piece puzzle, which I have never done before! I also want to be more patient with myself. I can often be too eager to find the lesson that Im supposed to learn, that I forget that sometimes all I need is time. Time to embrace the discomfort and sit in the confusion that often comes with change. Time for my heart to accept what my mind already knows. Time to grow one small step closer to who I want to be. I *almost* have no words on how to respond to the continued dehumanization and flagrant injustice that Breonna Taylor must suffer but after a night of thinking, this is what I will say: Life cannot be all good or all bad for anyone. When someone is happy, you can be sure that somewhere else, someone is crying. When someone is born, someone else dies. There are catastrophes and there are celebrations. We know. Breonna Taylor’s family has been in mourning for over 194 days. Yesterday, they suffered a further indignity when no charges were brought against her murderers. And I couldn’t stop thinking about how I was going to sleep and was so sure that the next morning I would wake up. I did! You did. We’re all here. And you might be having a shitty day or a good day but the point is you are having a day. This is a gift that was stolen from Breonna and even in death, that gift (neé right) is not protected for her. We, Black women, are reminded in so many different ways that our lives, our bodies, are tools to be manipulated, played with, used and discarded at will. Black women are tired. We want to sleep. We want to also wake up. Please help us. Please protect us. Please keep us safe. Please do not contribute to the narrative that our lives are disposable and tarnish our memories by “moving on”. I know. A Prada show. I know a swimsuit launch. I know. We still need to be more sensitive and mindful. Things will never change if we don’t. Life is complicated, we get it, but the privilege to forget, to think about other things, please do not throw that in our faces. “I understand that I’ll never understand, but I’ll stand”, yes? Another bucket list item taken care of. I never did the #manitouincline while I was living in Colorado, but I always meant to. The altitude hurt, but I survived and was only sore for 3 days afterwards. 😂 . . I decided this would be a perfect send off for my @newtonrunning gravitys which have gotten me through training for and completing 2 HIMs, up and down haleakala (twice), and countless hikes after they were retired as my training shoes. “Travelling solo didn’t start as a choice. I tried, numerous times, to inspire friends or family to come with me on one of my journeys. And, although there were some that were almost at the tipping point, no one took me up on my offer.⠀ ⠀ I still go.⠀ ⠀ Alone.⠀ ⠀ It’s not actually hard to travel by myself, in many ways it’s easier. And, if I had to wait for someone to go with me, I would have never made it to the first country, let alone the 34th.⠀ ⠀ That’s okay though. Because I learned a few things along the way, about myself, and about the world, that has made me enjoy travelling solo. Top of the list is: I like hanging out with myself.⠀ ⠀ I have discovered that I am always, without fail, more myself when I am travelling. If I had someone with me, watching, I probably would never ‘let myself go’ as freely as when there are no witnesses. Travel can be hard and often not pretty. Sometimes you have to crumble. Sometimes the only person that needs to know something…is you.⠀ ⠀ I have faith that I will be okay while traipsing across the planet because arbitrary lines drawn in the sand may make a country, but people are people, no matter which border they sit behind.⠀ ⠀ I have also found my people: travellers. They are out there, floating around the planet, with the same beating heart as me. These people are easiest to find the more I stray from the well-worn path.⠀ ⠀ Back home in Canada, people ask me what my favourite part of the trip was.
