I have a flock of chickens and guineas as some of you may know. Over the past couple of years, I started composting and have noticed an improvement in our soil. I still love to play in the dirt as an adult☺️. Nature is magnificent and provides us with so much beauty. We in return, need to respect her and treat her well.🌾 🍁VINTAGE. My husband and I try to be resourceful as much as possible. I enjoy thrifting and antiquing. Quite a few items in our home were found that way or handed down from elder family members. while I talk a lot about the hats Ive been making for the shop launch next week, I havent yet mentioned that I also have headbands/ear warmers! this is the #TrailHeadband, and its perfect for wearing a bun or ponytail while still keeping the ears warm with the double-layer of soft wool. #tbt to when my obsession with @lionbrandyarn Jeans started. If you know, you know.😂 It was a hard time for me. I was struggling with health issues and killer imposter syndrome. This was my first commisioned design. I almost didnt meet the deadline because my back went out. I was crocheting and writing while laying flat on my couch. It went to testing and I was in the same position. It wasnt until just before release that I was able to move freely. Listen, I dont reccomend this AT ALL! But I wonder what would have happened if I wasnt forced to slow down. I was struggling with the design, it wasnt working the way I wanted. With so much time to be still and think, it came to me. I have yet to top this design, at least in my mind. It taught me a lesson. Its why you will never see me pump out designs fast. I take my time. Slow down. Be still. It will come to you. 💀 OK I finally had a serious convo with my husband about his totally stalled #skullsweater. He madly wants it done but last time we tried it on he said it was too big! This put it in the time out basket because 1) ripping it out was not going to happen, 2) I thought that the current size would actually be a perfect oversized fit for ME 💁‍♀️ but 3) I didn’t have enough yarn for two sweaters. You see my dilemma!? We have a solution, people! I will finish this sweater in the current sizing with the current yarn (for moi ❤️ ) AND we will use it to decide exactly the measurements we need for his sweater. Then we will buy the exact yarn he wants for it instead of this hand-me down stuff I had in my stash. Since there are quite a few new faces I thought I would share a little bit about myself and what better way than with @knitbrooks #CreativeRootsChallenge ⁣ ⁣ The kick off week #CreativeRootsChallengeWeek1 is about your creative journey reflections.⁣ ⁣ So for those of you who don’t know me, I’m Elise... knitter/maker/designer/crocheter behind @frosiaknits , toddler mom, dual citizen travel lover flag flag, gluten free amateur baker and cook, and 100% a Taurus. I live just outside of DC but long for the days I lived in Siena, Italy. ⁣ ⁣ Journey Reflections:⁣ ⁣ 1- I’m really proud of where my little business has gone in a year. I feel so lucky to have worked with @thn.life and @cloverusa to release patterns and blog posts over the past year. I never thought I would be offered any kind of blog/collab let alone within the first year. It has given me the boost to keep going and keep honing my craft and designing skills.⁣ ⁣ 2 - I’m feeling good about the fact that I have started my website planning and design. I have wanted to start this side hustle for at least 6 or 7 years now and I have finally had the courage to start. I am proud I finally bought a domain and am making it happen (no matter how long it takes to get it ready to go live)⁣ ⁣ 3 - I’m happy with where this year has taken me but I can’t help comparing myself to others and frequently dive into a spiral of if only I did this, if only I was more focused with the time I have for my side hustle, if only I wasn’t always behind on my to-do list...I would be where X person is or be working with X company or make X amount. I struggle with feeling pressured as a designer at times. I have to invent the next big thing, design some thing that will go viral or I could be irrelevant, am I getting older and outdated? Are my social values apparent enough in my work and how I treat others? Is my online presence strong enough? think these are questions that most designers face at some point or another. While I love the work of my colleagues, sometimes I need to stop looking at my feed so that I don’t get caught into a self comparison trap! When I went to @knitwityarnshop The other day, and I was perusing all the incredible colors they have to offer of all the different yarns, I found myself asking “what color is popular right now? What color do people like? “ I asked myself this on my birthday. And after about a half hour of indecisiveness, I decided to erase the board and then I asked myself “what color speaks to you?” And I grabbed a skein in less than a minute. That’s what I will be designing the second version of this in. Sometimes we just need to listen to ourselves a little better and try to steal the voices of what other people will think. As somebody who has struggled with codependency, this can be a difficult task for me, but a very worthy one. Are you letting too many outside voices in? This is my aunt Samira. She sells these handmade beautiful blankets to help supplement her social security income which is barely enough to pay her bills. She also collects and recycles cans for extra cash. By the age of 10, both of her parents had passed, and she quit school in Lebanon to help raise her 5 brothers. In 1990, shortly after I was born, she moved to America with help from her brothers. With selfless help from my mom and dad, she was able to work and start/run her own business in her younger years. She was always too stubborn to fully immerse herself in American culture. Thankfully, she’s probably the reason I still carry some of my family’s country’s mother tongue. She’s never been married and lives alone in a foreign land. She is the definition of resilience, but the older she gets, I can see the wear of prolonged cultural unfamiliarity on her. This morning I started typing and noticed that a strand of yarn had broken in the bind-off of one of my mitts! 😱 Not bad for 6-year old mitts, and fortuitous actually, because the finger side had always been waaaaay too big. To fix (see bottom mitt): 1️⃣Unravel ribbing, frogging to the row before it started and catching each stitch back on a small size 8” circular for tighter knitting 2️⃣Reduce 15% of stitches into new 1x1 ribbing (decrease after every ~8th stitch) 3️⃣Knit ribbing again until yarn is finished! 🏷Pattern: Wristers by Lisa M. What a storm 2020 has been. From the fires in Australia to the loss of Kobe, then an unprecedented global pandemic which didn’t seem like it would really affect me personally until my 32 year old cousin died last week from complications of COVID-19 and double pneumonia. But the rainbow is God’s promise for Daniel, and his eternal reward in Heaven. The rainbow in my hat isn’t perfect, but neither is my life and that’s okay. My Mood hat is done! Here’s my fancy field walk photo shoot! I love this hat! It is a combination of a DK local BFL yarn that I paired with a Tynn Silk Mohair from Sandnes Garn. It was windy this morning and the wind did not go through the hat because the mohair is filling all of the crevices. Here’s what I did - more like a recipe than a pattern. I used size 4 (3.5mm) on 16” (40cm) circular needles. Cast on 100 stitches and join in the round. I always add a stitch and then knit two together to join them. Knit a rib pattern for 11 inches (knit 1, purl 1) then start decreasing. I started decreasing every 4th stitch by knitting two together. Next round, knit or purl the stitches you see. Next round knit two stitches together every fourth stitch - this is where I kinda just knit two together on a whim. Switch to DPNs when you want to. Continue until you have just 12 stitches left on your needles and pull the yarn through all of them and tighten and knot it good. Save the end to tie on a Pom Pom if you want. I tried to keep the ribbing pattern in tact as I was closing up by knitting duplicate stitches together so it’s more of a recipe than a pattern. Use any mohair color with this yarn - hence why I call it my Mood hat. Both yarns are on my website. Done and blocked! This is the first sweater I’ve finished since our shelter-in-place started—for a while there I only had enough concentration for shawls and socks.
