¡Llego la primavera y Puente Alto lo sabe! En años previos a la Independencia en la localidad de Monte Patria, vivía Añañuca, una bella y soltera joven indígena. Un día llegó al pueblo un minero que andaba en busca de un tesoro. Al conocer a Añañuca, surgió el amor entre ambos, por lo que decidieron casarse. La pareja fue feliz durante un tiempo, pero una noche, el joven tuvo un sueño donde le era revelado el lugar en donde se encontraba la mina que por tanto tiempo buscó. A la mañana, sin avisarle a nadie, partió a buscarla. Añañuca, desolada, lo esperó y esperó, pero pasaban los días, las semanas, los meses y el joven minero nunca regresó. Añañuca pronto murió, producto de la pena dicen. Fue enterrada por los pobladores en pleno valle en un día de suave lluvia. Al día siguiente, salió el sol y todos los vecinos del pueblo pudieron ver un sorprendente suceso. El lugar donde había sido enterrada la joven se cubrió por una abundante capa de flores rojas. Desde ese momento fue que se le dio a esta flor el nombre de Añañuca. Con el fin ya declarado del invierno las plantas se están haciendo notar con sus llamativos colores, un ejemplo de esto es la protagonista de esta leyenda, la cual hace referencia a esta endémica especie de nuestra comuna y país, cuyo nombre científico es *Rhodophiala advena*. Esta es una especie geófita lo cual dice que pierde su sistema aéreo o visible en los meses desfavorables, permaneciendo con vida en su organo de reserva que es un bulbo (como cebollas, ajos, etc), incluso pueden pasar años esperando buenas condiciones. Debido a la poca presencia en nuestra comuna si ves esta planta no arranques sus flores o partes de ella. Si vas a realizar una colección de semillas haz una recolección consciente de su vulnerabilidad, además tener un conocimiento previo de la especie para maximizar los buenos resultados. Foto 2: Hojas. Threadleaf ragwort (Senecio flaccidus) This vibrant bloom is found on shrubs along dry creek beds, roads, and trails in the desert landscape of the Southwestern US and central-northern Mexico. This ragwort is vital to the desert flora because it grows over long stretches of ground, priming the soil for other plants to grow. This, however, poses a problem for cattle and horses, who may develop liver disease from consuming large quantities of the shrub. Nevertheless, active tribes found a variety of uses for this abundant plant. The Hopi and Navajo people used threadleaf ragwort fibers as brushes and brooms to remove the spines off of prickly pears. The Jemez Pueblos used the smoke created from roasting the flower as a stimulant for faint and sick people. Getting out into the #greatoutdoors is a habit that every one of us should try and get into every day. The benefits of spending time in #nature are plenty. Stapelia flower buds expand like a balloon until they break open to release a putrid odour. The main pollinators are flies which are attracted to the colour and pubescence of the flowers, along with the smell, which mimics rotting animal corpses; sometimes flies will even lay their eggs on the flowers they visit. At the centre of each flower, the male and female flower parts are found within a rigid, star-like structure, which is surrounded by five grooves that may temporarily trap pollinators. As flies move around the flower, searching for places to lay eggs or to feed on the nectar, they are guided into the grooves, where wax-covered packages of pollen (pollinia) are located. The pollinia are positioned such that they may easily become trapped on the legs or head of the pollinator as it tries to free itself from the flower. Once freed, pollinators may visit other flowers, effecting cross pollination when they move. After successful pollination, each flower produces two horn-like structures called follicles. Last documented in the wild 24 years ago, two years of searching 💜 This is the goddess of Ixias, and we found it! Keir walked over 40km, the last week alone, to try and find this species. Finally, a day after Keir all but gave up, convinced it was extinct in the wild - he found it. Ixia leipoldtii, collected in 1935 for the first time, described in 1954 and located by the legend Manning in 1996 again. He noted that due to its single population with very few plants, and its precarious distribution on a very small Renosterveld fragment, it stands a big chance of going extinct in the wild. This was 24 years ago. And, as per normal, the biggest nerd amongst the two of us decide THAT is the plant we need to find in the wild. Thank goodness he did. Screams echoed across the Klein Karoo, we were ecstatic, as were the incredible landowners who are the proud custodians of this critically endangered Ixia species. Well done to the Lynchmen who dedicated hours of their time searching (in completely the wrong area 😂) for this amazing flower. Wish you could have been there when we finally found it. Puya alpestris subsp. zoellnerii. Popularmente conocida como Chagual junto a sus parientes. Especie endémica de Chile central, habita desde la Región de Coquimbo hasta la Región de OHiggins desde los 0 hasta los 2.000 msnm, siendo mayormente abundante entre Valparaíso y Santiago. Crece generalmente en lugares pedregosos y áridos. Florecen entre octubre y diciembre aproximadamente cada 5-10 años, por eso verlos así es muy valioso y aún más tan cercanos a la zona urbana, donde la presión aumenta para la vegetación nativa (basura, incendios, talas, especies exóticas). Llama profundamente su increíble y profusa floración, alimento del Picaflor de Juan Fernández. En Peligro de extinción dado el sobrepastoreo de cabras y herbívoria por conejos, además de la destrucción de hábitat. Hoy es muy cultivada tanto en el continente (litoral central) y el poblado de Juan Bautista.
