One more day until California Biodiversity Day🌱 ! Let’s meet the Sheephead in its Kelp forest habitat! . Sheephead A common kelp forest member of the Wrasse family, Sheephead have some pretty cool adaptations. First of all these epic fish all start life as females (Girl Power) and morph into males around the teenage years. It is thought that food availability or environmental factors have a role to play in this gender change, but the jury is still out on the actual cause. Sheephead have big buck front teeth that they use to pry hard-shelled animal off of rocks and then along with their powerful jaws crush their prey. To avoid becoming a meal themselves, come night time these diurnal fish find a nice crevice to bed on down for the night and wrap themselves in mucous blanket that prevents predators from smelling their scent. Leading up to CA Biodiversity Day on September 7th, each day this week we will be featuring a fascinating plant or animal found in one of the many different habitat types you can find here at Crystal Cove State Park! . Did you know that California is the most biodiverse state in the U.S. and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet? Here are some amazing California numbers: Over 30% of all plant and vertebrate species in the U.S. occur in California. . There are 1000+ species of vertebrates (65% occur only in California): 650 birds, 220 mammals, 100 reptiles, 75 amphibians, 70 freshwater fish, 100 marine fish and mammals. . There are 6,500 + types of plants (2000+ endemic to California). . There are 30,000+ species of insects including 1,600 species of native bees! . Tricyrtis hirta or Toad Lily 🐸 is native of Japan and belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is a perennial plant and grows in partial sun and shady locations and prefers rich soil. Been feeling a little stuck lately... ha, get it? Because this sea star is stuck to the side of the tank? ... Nevermind 😂 There are around 2,000 species of sea star globally, and of those the most common are the five hand variety, however some species have up to forty hands! At present there is only one recorded Australian species of sea star that is endangered, and that is the Derwent River Sea Star (not pictured). On a global scale many more are endangered, however it is often difficult to record populations and population trends. We often forget about the little guys and the underdogs when we talk about #endangeredspecies This photo pictures the underside of a sea star (I have no idea which species) that I photographed in a Sydney aquarium a few years ago. These unique critters can live to be 35 in captivity so hopefully one day I will visit it again! Sea stars are carnivorous and in this photo you can see their tiny, suction-cup feet which they use to pry open things like clams and oysters. Some species can also regenerate a whole new sea star from a single limb! The Sea Star is an echinoderm, not a fish, and is more closely related to sand dollars and sea urchins. Hoy me di cuenta que hace mucho que no les contaba sobre alguna especie de pez, así que aprovechando de que son mis animales favoritos quiero contarles sobre estos que no tienen tanta prensa Se los conoce con el nombre científico de Emblemaria hypacanthus y fueron descriptos formalmente por primera vez en 1889. Forman parte de la familia Chaenopsidae, que probablemente no conozcan pero ya les contaré más sobre ella en el futuro. Habitan únicamente en el Golfo de California, en el Océano Pacífico. Suelen estar asociados a la vida de arrecife, formando sus guaridas en los tubos de gusanos poliquetos y con los restos calcáreos de distintos moluscos Viven en aguas poco profundas (entre 1 y 10 metros) y presentan un pequeño tamaño, llegando a medir hasta unos 5 centímetros de largo. Se alimentan de zooplancton marino que capturan en la columna de agua. En esta especie los machos presentan una coloración mucho más llamativa que las hembras. - Clownfish like Nemo are in the family Anemonefish that includes about thirty other species. When the lone female in a group of Anemonefish dies, the biggest male (the only one that was breeding) becomes a female and resumes reproduction - now with the new largest male.

Photo by @manuela.kirschner False Clown Anemonefish. Like all Clownfishes it lives in close symbiosis with a sea anemone, without which it would be easy prey for numerous predators. But I have to honestly say, getting a really good picture of an anemonefish is not that easy. Many photographers can certainly agree that this requires a lot of patience and perseverance necessary is. They are always on the move and never stand still for a photo.
