Here’s a fun part of my job... Sometimes I make these unfortunate sketches that would get a first grader failed out of art class. Then a real artist (like @mike_sudal) turns them into, well, art. It’s pretty cool when someone can turn an idea, your idea, into a real image on the page (and it looks just like the one you imagined, but better). Just like @kjosoutdoors did with our cover. Ermagherd.... this is way out there wishful thinking, but I’m doing it. If this year has taught me anything it’s to just put yourself out there and go for it! I painted myself, which I’m still exceedingly uncomfortable about (I had many conversations with my sister about this. Do I put something ridiculous on my head? What about a finger up the nose?) but it’s ended up just me and a lovey chicken called Pepper. This is my first portrait, it was a challenge for sure, but I’ve had a lot of fun doing it. I love that the Archibald is open to everyone, the dreamers and the pros. Oh, the spectacle and the politics! So much fun. Next time if I do it again I’ll get a sitter, someone a bit fammas for sure. Thank you @emrata for putting into words the same feelings and frustrations I’ve had with the fashion industry and their active role in reducing a models agency over self. Image and body... when I found out @richardprince_official had included an image of me in his show, my first reaction was to hit up the photog @carastricker and ask, where’s the money at?! I never shared that I was in the show because it made me so angry that I had no say in my image, let alone compensation. It made me feel cheap. Used. The reality of the modeling world that my model friends and I constantly grapple with: how does this lack of autonomy show up in other areas of the job and life? “Heading Out” - Another piece that’s taken on quite a different meaning for me recently. I made this piece about the shark fin trade - the hammerhead shark population has been decimated because their fins are valuable, coveted for shark fin soup. The hammerheads are caught, brought into the boat where their fins are cut off, then they are then dumped them back into the ocean, still alive. They die a slow, painful death. Imagine that the things that make you you, that you bring with you everywhere you go, will ultimately be the cause of your demise. And in a horrific way. No where you go, even Home isn’t safe. 🍎This is the piece I originally wanted to make the print for my sold-out show with thinkspace but I didn’t finish it in time. I tried to make an all airbrushed painting (w/ masked edges) as a fun experiment but it really isn’t fun for me. Not sure if I have the patience or if I feel like it just makes me dead inside lol but I really like pushing blobs of oil/acrylic paint with a brush, especially with all the textures. I also just like drawing, but the softness you get with airbrushing is nice & is something I’ll probably add/mix with future paintings. I still love airbrushing shirts tho! Props to all my artist pals who have the patience for tape/frisket & do this super well. Anyway, just thought I’d post some process/studies from the studio.
