Come July 9th of 1931, the second Vainamoinen class coastal defense ship of the Finnish Navy is launched, she is Ilmarinen! She weighs in at 3,900 tons, has a length of 305 feet (93 meters), and can make a modest 14.5 knots; armed with four 10 inch, eight 4 inch guns, and an assortment of AA weapons. Overall Ilmarinen has a peaceful career through the 1930s, her crew making visits to neighboring Scandanavian countries and other ports within Finland. The time not being spent on voyage or doing maintenance aboard is spent with playing cards and such-like games. There is one occasion in 1934 into the evening when Ilmarinen comes aground while underway to Vaasa. No.2 engine room is ruptured and she develops a list to port, worse still is the warship’s pumps cannot pump out the water faster than it was flooding. Due to this Vaasa sent in the coast guard to assist Ilmarinen and she’s taken in for repairs at Suomenlinna. By the end of November in 1939, the USSR invades Finland after demands over territorial gain fail. Ilmarinen, for her part, steams for Aland Islands to provide military supplies and support should they too be invaded. The natural ally to Finland finds itself in defense of the Island once ice begins to form further the conflict drags on into winter. Ilmarinen and her sister are better found useful for AA cover for the city of Turku against Soviet air raids. Some of the air raids see close calls for Ilmarinen, on December 25th she is near missed off the stern which causes minor flooding and kills one crewman from splinters. Although Finland lost the Winter War, a chance came to regain the lost land from Russia in June of 1941 when they join Germany in Operation Barbarossa. Ilmarinen and her sister, on July 12th, make for Hanko in support of Finnish troops to bombard the Soviet forces there. Specifically the air field is shelled, this being the first time Ilmarinen fires her main guns in anger. The warship doesn’t see much action between then and the beginning of September that year. In the Baltic Sea there are still some islands needed to be taken as the last pockets of resistance in Estonia. ((Continues below👇👇👇)) - @maritime_disasters on Instagram

ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system. But Shackleton insisted on going. “I could not content myself to wait,” he wrote, “knowing that six hundred miles away my comrades were in dire need.” - #shackleton #ernestshackleton #imperialtransantarctic #antarctica #polarexploration #endurance - @shackletonlondon on Instagram

Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

FS Dunkerque ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque was the lead ship of Dunkerque Class Battleship built for the French Navy in the 1930s. The class also included Strasbourg. The two ships were the first capital ship to be built by the French Navy after WW1; the planned Normandie and Lyon Classes had been cancelled at the outbreak of war, and budgetary problems prevented the French from building new battleships in the decade after the war. Dunkerque was laid down in December 1932, was launched October 1935, and was completed in May 1937. She was armed with a main battery of eight 330mm/50 modéle 1931 gun, arranged in two quadruple gun turrets and had a top speed of 29.5 knots (54.6 km/h; 33.9 mph) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque and Strasbourg formed the French Navys 1ère Division de Ligne (1st Division of the Line) prior the Second World War. The two ships searched for German commerce raiders in the early months of the war, and Dunkerque also participated in convoy escort duties. The ship was badly damaged during the British attack after the Armistice that ended the first phase of Frances participation in WW2, but she was refloated and partially repaired to return to Toulon for comprehensive repairs. Dunkerque was scyttled in November 1942 to prevent her capture by the Germans, and subsequently seized and partially scrapped by the Italians and later the Germans. Her wreck remained in Toulon until she was stricken in 1955, and scrapped three years later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapon : 8 x 330 mm (13.in) guns 16 x 130mm DP guns 8 × single 37mm AA guns 32 × 13,2mm AA machine guns ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- #fs #fsdunkerque #dunkerque #france #french #ww2 #history #ship #battleship #navy #frenchnavy - @worldhistory_id on Instagram

In St. Petersburg there is launched a battleship of the Gangut class for the Imperial Russian Navy on September 22nd of 1911, she is Petropavlovsk! She weighs in at 24,800 tons, has a length of 594 feet (181.2 meters), and can make 24 knots; armed with twelve 12 inch (305mm) guns, sixteen 4.7 (120mm) inch guns, four 17.7 (450mm) inch submerged torpedo tubes, and for the sake of it a single 3 inch (76mm) gun for AA purposes. Petropavlovsk’s commissioning would not take place however until January of 1915, The Great War has already begun. Throughout the years she is active in the Imperial Russian Navy, Petropavlovsk does not really see action. What does come is the February Revolution in which much of her crew take part in during March of 1917. Come March of the following year and Russia’s situation with the war has worsened significantly, and find themselves in the recently formed Finland after the Brest-Litovsk Treaty. Petropavlovsk takes part in the Ice Cruise through the Gulf of Finland for Kronstadt. Of the Baltic Fleet’s battleships, Petropavlovsk is in the best shape and will be the only ship steaming out of Kronstadt to assist minelaying operations during 1919 as an assortment of naval forces attempt to lure out the now Soviet warships. On May 31st that year, destroyer Azard leads the battleship out after British destroyers succeed in making a faint to attract the Soviets into their minefield. In return, Petropavlovsk does not strike a mine and HMS Walker receives two 12 inch holes in her hull for its trouble. While in Kronstadt on June 17th, a raid of British motor torpedo boats occurs during the night. Petropavlovsk, stationary at dock, is helpless as HMS CNB-88 comes in under fire and lets loose two torpedoes. They are deep and miss the battleship, but striking the wharf and causing very light damage. Later her crew are taken off for service elsewhere and Petropavlovsk will not take any further part of the conflict. Come March of 1921, her crew will take part in a second rebellion against their government in what will be called the Kronstadt Rebellion; the reasons and results of which far too complicated for this post’s coverage. Britannia, a whaling ship that brought convicts and supplies to Sydney as part of the Third Fleet, was the first ship to harpoon a sperm whale off the Australian coast, in October 1791. The whaling industry helped the fledgling colony survive and the industry flourished until a downturn in the 1850s and the eventual overharvesting of many species. The last whaling station in Australia closed in 1978. Australia is today a leading member of the International Whaling Commission and deeply engaged in the fight against whaling.
