Gooooood morning! “Why did my tree break in the storm?” There are a few reasons for tree failure, a main one is structural issues. These structural issues can be identified before they break most of the time and you can take steps to mitigate these risks. The quality of a branch union can be assessed. If the branch union has a tight “V” shape... it’s a risk. We call that a co dominant stem. If there’s bark crammed into that tight “V” union, failure is imminent, the only variable is when... A co dominant stem is a defect and can easily be pruned out when a tree is young. With a mature tree you may need to add some mechanical strength through cables and braces. Go have a look at your trees! These co doms are common in our fast growers. Be ready for the next big wind storm. This weeks topic. I ask because I cant work it out. I looked at glamping with the kids and it was great until I realised how impractical it is. With a tent or whatever, if I have to go to the toilet in the night or one of the kids needs taking, I cant exactly wander off and leave the others asleep. What if the toddler gets up and comes to look for me and wanders off? Hotels often have a number limit for rooms and need one adult in each if you split the kids. Foreign holidays often make you pay single person supplements and its expensive enough taking 4 kids away! So how have you managed? Have you found a way around it? Or have you had to buddy up with family or friends to make it work? Just wait til the kids are older? Tell me all! Floatin comes out tomorrow! Friday September 4th. There will be a video to go with it which we had a blast making. Lots of friends came out to the lake and we made a day of it. Mostly it was flawless. Besides @corkyclouse getting a stick stuck in his foot at the onset of the day, and @zack_knudsen losing his drone to the dark depths of the lake, we managed to get a full day of footage. Special thanks to @nashvilletoons for taking us out on the water and showing us an amazing time. Their boats are by far the best pontoons I’ve ever been on. Another special thanks to Zack Knudsen for getting the video all thought out and put together. Thanks to @johncirillo7 and @halstednick who I co-wrote Floatin’ with. HRC FOREST CLOSED TO ALL RECREATION // Welp. The wind shifted, folks.The Hood River County Board of Commissioners have closed the County Forest due to continued fire danger and lack of available firefighting resources. The closure takes effect as of 1pm Friday, September 11, 2020 and restricts all public use on the County Forest, County Forest Roads and County Forest Trails. The closure is temporary and will be rescinded once conditions improve and the threat diminishes. This means that POST CANYON IS CLOSED. Current visibility in HR is about a quarter of a mile due to smoke. Hopefully this closure will be short lived... but in the mean time, RAIN DANCE, PEOPLE. HARD.
