Part 2/2:โ ๐ When evaluating foods as healthy (health promoting) or inflammatory (disease promoting) one should consider a few factors:โ โ โ ๐ฑ How nutrient dense is the food?โ ๐ฑ How much anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, and other micronutrients?โ ๐ฑ How many inflammatory metabolites are produced by the gut biome?โ ๐ฑ What hormonal impact will there be? EX: Glycemic loadโ ๐ฑ What is the proportion of fatty acids? Omega-3/Omega-6โ โ โ ๐ A fruit for example contains a ton of vitamins, anti-oxidants, fiber which stabilizes blood sugar, but no saturated fat and cholesterol. After digestion by the stomach and the pancreas, the health benefits continue, because it gets fermented by the gut microbiome and produces short-chain fatty acids which further promote health. โ โ ๐ฅฉ A piece of meat contains saturated fat (increases your blood sugar), cholesterol (a risk factor for heart disease), endotoxins, heme iron (causes oxidative damage), but it has protein and some other micronutrients.โ โ โ ๐ But perhaps the most inflammatory effect of meat comes from its metabolism by the gut microbiome which leads to the production of Trimethylamine Oxide (TMA) which traverses the colon wall and enters the circulation. TMA converts to TMAO which causes vascular disease. Think of it as the molecule that โdigs holesโ into the blood vessels opening the door for cholesterol to come inside the blood vessels and close your arteries, which causes a heart attack, impotence, and stroke.โ โ โ ๐ง What else beside meat causes TMAO production and has a lot of saturated fat which increases cholesterol and blood glucose? Currently in my 3rd reverse diet in my fitness journey! I started counting macros about 4 years ago but wasnโt consistent. Followed many fed diets like whole30 & was eating low carb, low protein, and too many fats. โฃ โขโขโขโขโฃ From the left that was my first progress photo I sent to my current coach, @sdangerfit โฆ September, 2018!!โฃ I came to her doing an hour+ of cardio a day, barely lifting and under eating. I came to her yo-yo dieting & new I was overtraining. At that time I was doing competitive cheer, school cheer and running. Although my goal was to lose fat & tone up, a reverse diet was NEEDED to restore metabolism, and focus on building muscle so when I did lose some fat, โtone upโ there would be visible muscle. I reversed / got up to maintenance for 8 months & began my first cut spring / into summer 2019.โฃ โขโขโขโขโฃ Middle photo was taken at the end of my โslight surplusโ last February so 2020. I had reversed, maintained than wanted to build more muscle so entered about my maintenance at that time eating around 1750-1900- losely tracking. I stayed there for almost 6 months & built a GOOD amount of muscle!โฃ โขโขโขโขโฃ Last photo on the far right side is me NOW mid September, 2 months into reverse and not quite up to maintenance. My plan is to stay here for the fall and into the winter most til April ish then possibly do a quick cut or a longer and slower approach like I did this past one! I am not sure if I will enter a slight surplus again but time will tell. IT IS possible to gain muscle at maintenance it is just harder and takes more time. โฃ โขโขโขโขโฃ Luckily, I had a lean, 4โ11 frame. I have always had that athletic build so I tend to gain muscle quickly. โฃ โขโขโขโขโฃ Within these 3 photos I have only lost 8 lbs but have gained A LOT of muscle & confidence !!!โฃ Going from the girl that was scared to lift weights, started using 5 lb DBs to now bench pressing 35 lbs! โฃ I have more lean muscle mass and a whole new body comp!!! Doing 1 day a week of cardio, 5 days of strength training, fueling my body properly AND eating MORE!!! 5 years ago I wore whatever I could find that โfitโ and thought made me look โthinnerโ (there is no such thing btw๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ๐คฃ). . Iโve worked hard from the inside out and building up that confidence I really lacked. It can be a slow process but know that totally ok (small steps). ๐Gym Breakfast Bowls๐ณ I developed this recipe because I wanted to come up with ways to include more vegetables in my breakfasts. Itโs hard enough for me to eat vegetables at normal hours but in the morning dude? Forget about it. I know I should be eating them more though so unfortunately for me it has to be done. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ In this recipe there is zucchini and spinach to help increase vegetable consumption. Whenever I include vegetables in a meal I think of what kind of fat I can include to make them taste better. Sausage is a great way to add to the flavors of vegetables. โฃ โฃ It has a distinct and overpowering flavor so it was an easy choice for this dish. I also wanted to help mute the texture of the zucchini so I paired it with sweet potatoes to change up the monotony that would have been plain zucchini. Hard boiled eggs are my go to egg for meal prep. They last better than other methods.โฃโฃ โฃโฃ On the weight loss side I included a higher zucchini:sweet potato ratio and used turkey sausage. The weight gain side has a bit more potatoes, more pork sausage, and more eggs. More calories are needed if youโre looking to grow. โฃโฃ โฃโฃ P.s. you get 5 half eggs by cutting eggs in half and putting them into the dish. This is a meal prep recipe there is more than one dish being constructed. The other half is going in a different dish. If you make an odd number of meals and are left with a half of an egg left over just eat it.
