The behavior of the masses and the rhetoric being redundantly communicated will not make sense. You will start to connect with your God given intuition and critical thinking instead of passively absorbing others’ wants for you. This day marks the end of our celebration of Constitution week, thanks to everyone who supported it. But, it’s not over. Now it’s your turn. What would you do, if say...a new government took over and said “sorry, no more constitution, it’s outdated, we’re rewriting it”. Or if something else equally tyrannical occurs, some would argue our rights are already trampled beyond repair. If they can make the masses block their oxygen intake (with no end in sight) and stop working to feed their families, they can make the masses do anything. It’s up to us to use and protect our Constitution, not our government (those are just people elected by us to govern, not control us). Let’s get ahead of the momentum, not be another historical blunder, just “reacting” to new edicts and restrictions that will trap us. Get together with like minded friends, family, neighbors...in person...not on social media (funny how gatherings were of the first thing to be frowned upon) you will be surprised at the topics of conversation and solutions that arise, and stop “looking at the shiny object” they want you to stare at like a parakeet. The perfect Indian family, often talks about government policies, racism and inequality on the streets of America. They often talk about the restlessness of the liberals in India and speak of how the government should jail these ungrateful kids. As the born optimist I am, hoping for just a little snow this winter - I played with making snow goggles today.❄️👓 Since I didn’t have a cool reindeer or whale bone, I went for an already curved piece of fresh birch wood. The curved grain is really important if you don’t want the goggles to crack, because it’s optimal to have them going into your head for most protection. I learned that the hard way (last picture; also those that almost bit didn’t make it.) Sometimes the only way to create progress is being ok with mistakes and to learn from them. Especially carving out the narrow slits to look through was a bit harder than it looks... 🔪 While I was carving I was thinking about other options for snow goggles in a survival situation. The intensity of the sun’s rays, reflected by the snow can cause severe snow blindness. You might have access to wood, but unless you have enough time and energy (took me about 3 hrs to make them right.) you will most likely have to look into other material options. Duct tape goggles was straight forward to make. They were kinda flimsy no matter how many layers I added on, and got too close to my eyes, making them relatively uncomfortable to wear. Bark from trees are shown as an option in many survival books. In real life they can be difficult to make because they also have a tendency to crack easily when bended, and/or get too close to your eyes. Especially in the winter time because the sap goes deeper in the tree to protect them, leaving the bark more dry. Webbing from a rucksack, textile strips from a t-shirt, leather belt to cut out, cordage from some of your gear (because natural cordage is hard to get at winter unless you use roots.) You might have many more ideas but I’m sure you get the point. What’s on you is a bonus. If I were to walk a long time outdoors in snow, protecting my eyes, I have no doubt now that I would prefer using a little extra time on some goggles in hard material as eg. wood. We did it! This past Sunday 9/13, we celebrated our first year in business. 52 weeks, 366 [#leapyear] days – wow! Looking back, it’s uncanny how closely the past 12 months evolved to basically follow our business plan. Some minor bumps here and there, of course, but blissfully no major challenges. What a year - on to the next! 🎉 🎉 🎉 PSYCHHHHHHHH / lol lol lol / 🥴🥴🥴: 2020 has tipped us all on our heads. We thought of a lot of Potentially Terrible Things that could go wrong, but we had NO idea our first year of bagels would literally be split into 50% normal life and 50% actual pandemic. A year ago only ‘Contagion’-super-fans knew what social distancing meant, masks were for Halloween for most of us, and hugging was part of daily life. Pre-Covid, our customer area was filled with customers, online ordering was something cool we couldn’t wait to get rolled out [Toast is getting the last laugh on that one…], and gloves didn’t have to be changed a jillion times a day or cost a jillion dollars a case. 🥯 So much has changed in all of our lives since we opened, it’s bananas 🍌 What hasn’t changed is that these are some damn good bagels. We continue to make and serve them with so so so much love. Our staff is the best [for real: thank you all, sorry I yell at Ed and my laptop sometimes, it’s a journey 💁♀️]. We have the most patient and kind [and hungry!] community of customers that continue to support us week over week. IN A PLAGUE! For all of this, we are proud and grateful and hopeful [are we still allowed to be hopeful? I think so.] The biggest sincere THANK YOU x a million to you all for helping us get through our first of many years on the corner of West and Winthrop 💛 🥯 We’ll probably post a bunch of little memories of the past year over the coming days.
