In July we venture out to a remote area of Western Australia to dive the third largest reef in the world. Incredibly diverse and vibrant, this particular stretch of Ningaloo Reef is known for the natural aggregation of whale sharks. Big beautiful graceful creatures who we know very little about. They are the biggest fish in the sea weighing around 40,000 lbs. Modeling suggests they live about 70 years, but again it’s not easy to measure this. Whale sharks have very large mouths and are filter feeders, so they swallow up big mouthfuls of plankton and inevitably bits of plastic. Instead of being depressed lumps wasting away, let us go support eco tourism which helps scientists learn more about these amazing animals to help protect them! As well as showing the government these creatures are worth more alive (tourism!) than dead (sold at the fish market). I have spent the last few days really thinking about #sharkweek. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But it is missing something. I looked it up and last year, 35 million people watched Shark Week! After a week of celebrating these amazing animals, wouldn’t it be great if the last episode was a list of things all 35 million people can do to save our sharks? Sharks are in real trouble. They are being overfished, mutilated for their fins, poisoned, hunted to extinction, and caught as bycatch. Shark is in our pet’s food and in our makeup. We are taking their habitat, warming their waters, and polluting it with our trash. @discovery - You have such a big audience. Next year, can we end Shark Week with a whole episode that is a call to action? A call for conservation. Protection. Respect. For our oceans and our sharks. There are so many shark conservationists doing critical shark saving work - please consider giving them the platform they need to help us help our sharks. I am only 8. Sometimes the stars and sea align - even in the starless skies of an Antarctic summer. In the following instance, it was a case of land and marine mammals meeting in the middle of that thin interface between the liquid and oxygenated world. The location, Wilhelmina Bay, West Antarctic Peninsula. It was during an unassuming, after-dinner zodiac cruise from the platform of the National Geographic Explorer that some of our skiffs came across a group of feeding humpback whales. After about 20 minutes of impressive lunge feeding behavior the whales seemed to settle into a less focused pattern of feeding and shifted their attention towards us. What ensued was 40 minutes of the most attentive, curious, engaging behavior I’ve ever experienced from a marine mammal while on the ocean. During this period two individuals circled, swam under, spy-hopped next to and nearly (but never actually) rubbed their 40 foot bodies along every inch of our 22 ft. rubber boats. Taiwan bans fishing the giant Megamouth shark, Great White and Basking sharks. Since the Megamouth shark was discovered and named in 1976, only 226 have been recorded around the world as of June 17 this year — 146 of which were caught in Taiwan. The fishing ban also includes the Great White shark and Basking shark. Taiwan Fisheries made the announcement July 15, in an effort to preserve biodiversity in the waters of Taiwan. The ban is set to apply to all Taiwanese fishing boats, no matter where they fish, and will take effect in less than 60 days if no objections are raised. The country’s Fisheries Agency has stated that although fishing vessels are banned from catching the three species, catching them for teaching or scientific research purposes will be allowed after obtaining Cabinet-level approval from the Council of Agriculture. This follows the Taiwanese ban on fishing Whale sharks in 2018 and shark finning in 2012. Episode 4: An extraordinary encounter 🐋 This wasn’t my imagination, again and again it came back to my mind, turned over, and paused in the water, and plainly, they were looking at me. It was an extraordinary minute or so, but it was freaking real, slightly terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Excitement bubbled in my chest, awe filled my body and tears spilled out of my eyes and into my mask. It was a dream come true. One of the most life changing experiences thus far: Swimming with whales. I could free dive down to them, which intensified the vibrations of the songs in my chest. It felt profoundly spiritual, peaceful, and connected. That was huge. Dolphins got in on the action too. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was nowhere better to be. I’m at a loss for words. I’m forever changed after this experience. It doesn’t matter if you are searching for the tiniest crab or if you are watching Humpbacked Whales swim by, the ocean is consistently awe-inspiring. For those of us who have been fortunate to travel and explore diving locations around the world their tends to be a couple spots, maybe one dive or a collection of moments that come to mind, when asked where your favorite dive spot is. Repost from photographer @koen_hoekemeijer A humpback whale mom and her calf. A bit deeper you can see her escort for the moment. Escorts are mature humpback whales that tag along with a mother and her calf to help fend off predators. They basically run interference between them and whatever the perceived threat is. They usually stay in the background and very often you do not even realise they are there. It happened to me a few times that we were observing a mother and her calf when suddenly the escort made a close appearance. Escort humpback whales are usually male. Although they provide protection for the mother and her calf, their motivation is hardly altruistic. Basically they are hoping to be allowed to mate with the mother when she is ready to do so. Female humpbacks are also known to sometimes act as escorts. It is not known why they take up the escort role, but the answer probably lies in the social nature of the whales.
