“Lako prijevozni zdrug” - In the Italian 3rd Cavalry Division, 8th Italian Army, there was a peculiar division whose existence has been barely mentioned in the years after the war. This was the Croatian Light Transport Brigade, a brigade of volunteers from Independent State of Croatia which served in the Italian Army on the Eastern Front in late 1942. This formation came into existence after request by Italian authorities (given the fact that Croatia had already created a German-Croatian Wehrmacht Regiment). It firstly fought against Partisan formations in 1941, but was sent to Italy for further training. It participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, more precisely in the battles on the Don River. It was completely destroyed by the Red Army in December 1942. Much like their national counterparts in the German Army, they wore Italian uniforms with Croatian insignia and carried Croatian flags. - Interesting: This formation, of about 1,200 volunteers at its peak, sparked regional headlines in 2008 after the discovery of 16 killed legionnaires in Russia. One of them was a Bosniak officer by the name of Huso Dizdarević. - @bosnia_ww2 on Instagram

• The other Few • This poster, the most famous one of the war with the legendary quotation of Winston Churchill (Never was so much owed by so many to so few), was a tribute to RAF fighter pilots of the Battle of Britain -called the Few by Prime Minister- but the airmen featured actually belonged to Bomber Command, which on those days hit the German capital and relevant targets every night to keep the Nazis head down contributing to the winning of the battle and diverting the threat of invasion of the British Isles, a crucial role in which 719 bomber aircrew were killed. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the ‘Battle of Britain Day, a turning point in the war. Berlin authorized a main attack on Britain on a final attempt to destroy RAF Fighter Command in two major raids. The ensuining large scale air-battle, with the largest and most concentrated bombing against London to date, resulted in high losses to the German bombers. The day was a significant victory for the British, the Germans lost 57 aircraft while another 23 returned damaged. The pilots were, from left to right, Sgt Dinty Moore, Sgt Peter Elliot, Sgt Rawles, Sgt Harold Stone (DFM) and Sgt James Craig, all members of a Bomber Command squadron who posed for the propaganda image. From the initial adoption of a rigid racial and physical selection of their members, it was spent in the last years of the Second World War to also recruit foreign volunteers of German ethnicity or however ideologically linked to National Socialism despite their origin. Seattle’s Chinatown/International District has a complex history, stemming from decades of immigration and the hand-in-hand racism that came along with it. Since the conception of this district, there has always been some portion of the population that has suffered through the discrimination of others—namely white Americans. Starting in 1886, the Seattle Anti-Chinese Riot, during which “two weeks in white Seattleites rounded up the city’s Chinese residents, forced them onto ships and boxcars and shipped them north and south. By the end of it, a community of hundreds had been reduced to a few dozen” (Pulkkinen). For this reason, the Chinatown over here is less established than similar communities, such as Portland. Of course, the Chinese population has not been the only population discriminated against. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the vast majority of Chinatown’s Japanese population were forcibly removed to the internment camps. During their absence, “Chinese and Filipino workers and shops filled the need for services while the Japanese were gone for three years,” which kept this area alive (Densho). However, the numerous Japanese businesses and residences dwindled, and many people were not able to return to their homes or jobs once released; many employers and neighbors were openly hostile and did not want to be associated with Japanese-Americans. Unfortunately, while modern times have reduced the number of racist sentiments, longtime residents of the International District still face discrimination. This time, it is due to financial reasons—Seattle’s booming housing market and development have led to forced evictions as developers buy up older parts of the area. This gentrification has caused grief among citizens like Tai Fung Chin, who was “forced out of her apartment in Seattles International District back in 2015. But she didnt want to leave the neighborhood…’Because of the language barrier, this is like China — everybody speaks the same language so, they dont have any choice’ (KUOW).
