Places become known for different reasons, Stratford upon Avon is famous as the birth place of Shakespeare, Delft in the Netherlands for a particular kind of blue pottery, Fray Bentos in Argentina for tinned pies. HF is based in the small coastal town of Tenby, in the extreme South West of Wales, UK, and in as much as people have heard of it, it’s not for anything that comes out but for what comes in. And that’s visitors: The area was invaded, settled and robbed by Romans, Vikings, Normans, the latter in particular leaving their mark on the area in the form of beautiful churches and more castles than almost anywhere else in the world. In the 18th century, as the sea bathing health craze spread west, multi-coloured Georgian town houses crowded out Tenby’s fishing cottages and medieval wood-framed houses, and provided accommodation for those looking to benefit from the fresh Atlantic waters. Since those days it’s been known primarily as a tourist town, with population growing by tens of thousands over the summer months. But although Tenby’s known more for what comes in than in what it sends out into the world, it has made at least one massive contribution, in the mid 16th century, Robert Recorde of Tenby, invented the equals sign ‘=‘. That’s a pretty nice symbol. The expansion of organic production and plant-based eating are key to creating greater equality in the World, between people and animals, between society and wildlife, between business and environment. Guess who’s back🙋🏼♀️ It’s been a while so I thought I would post again!❤️ A lot of nasty things happening in the world have been brought to my attention, and I didn’t really know how else I could address it. I probably won’t mention anything about the failures of humanity in this caption, but just know I’m posting about them on my story whenever I find something relevant. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I never really speak in depth about my emotions on here, as in the past it has made me appear vulnerable so people treat me differently. Before you worry, I’m fine, you don’t need to check up on me because I’m ok. I think the last few weeks, I’ve been feeling shit. There’s many factors: feeling worthless, coronavirus, lack of freedom, pending normality, humanity’s disasters, it all just gets me down. Reading about the treatment of Black people and what is happening in Yemen makes me angry. I want to help, but apart from educating, donating and learning, I cannot fix all of the world’s problems. But I wish I could. I wish I could make life easier for everybody, no matter what their hardships may be. My feeling of self-love comes and goes, one day I’ll be preaching about loving yourself, then another I’ll feel totally under-appreciated and worthless. It comes in waves. But as I like to say, we must ride the waves. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In life there will be good and bad. The good being I’ve started up my own mini business by myself, learning a hobby with no experience, and finding a new passion, having so many loving people around me, being healthy, eating good food, and the bad being my lack of freedom and normality. I WISH I could go out and see people, I wish the whole virus could go away and everything could be the way it was, but things will never be the way they were again. Hoje vamos conhecer um dos cemitérios mais incríveis do mundo, o escocês Greyfriars, pelas lentes da nossa #necroturista Gabriela (@gabrielazimberg) Essas são as fotos do Greyfriars Kirkyard, um cemitério bem tradicional lá de Edimburgo. Ele tem túmulos muito antigos, pelo que me lembro os mais antigos datavam de 1700 e pouco. Uma coisa interessante sobre a arte tumular é que têm alguns túmulos com arte bem voltada para memento mori e menos voltada pra temas religiosos. Além disso esse cemitério tem uma história bem fofinha: o dono de um cachorro foi enterrado lá e o cachorro visitou o túmulo dele por 14 anos até seu falecimento. Hoje em dia ele esta enterrado no cemitério e tem uma escultura dele na rua em frente. Reza a lenda, se você passar a mão no focinho terá muita sorte. A última foto é de um cara chamado McGonagall, que é de onde a JK tirou inspiração pra personagem da Minerva no livro. Ela escreveu o primeiro livro em Edimburgo, então ela se inspirou em várias coisas por lá, inclusive numa rua que seria o beco diagonal. #cemiterio #greyfriars 💀 Today we will visit one of the most incredible cemeteries in the world, the Scottish Greyfriars, through the lens of our necrotourist Gabriela (@gabrielazimberg) These are the photos of Greyfriars Kirkyard, a very traditional cemetery in Edinburgh. It has very old tombs, so I remember the oldest ones dating from 1700 and a little. An interesting thing about tomb art is that there are some tombs with art that is well geared to memento mori and less geared to religious themes. In addition, this cemetery has a very cute story: the owner of a dog was buried there and the dog visited his grave for 14 years until his death. Nowadays he is buried in the cemetery and has a sculpture of him in the street in front. Legend has it, if you run your hand over your snout youll be very lucky. The last photo is of a guy named McGonagall, which is where JK got inspiration for Minervas character in the book. El castillo viejo de @ayto_manzanares_real está rodeado de un halo de misterio, su fecha de construcción o su promotor son desconocidos. Un proyecto de arqueología social se ha propuesto conocer más sobre esta enigmática fortaleza. 👉Sobre un altozano que domina La Pedriza, el curso del río Manzanares y la Cañada Real Segoviana, se encuentran los restos del castillo viejo, del que se conservan sus muros hasta una altura de tres metros aproximadamente. 🏗De planta rectangular y construido con mampostería de granito y encintados de ladrillo, posee tres torres cilíndricas, además de la torre del homenaje, que tiene planta cuadrada y casi 14m de lado. It stood on a rock in a small bay off the Shannon estuary, and its name is an anglicisation of the Irish, Carraig an Phoill (rock of the hole). The castle was known as The guardian of the Shannon because of its strategic command of the shipping lanes that supplied the trading city of Limerick, some 20 miles (32 km) upriver. The bay at Carrigafoyle was shielded from the estuary on the northern side by a wooded island; within the bay the castle-rock was defended on the west and south sides by a double defensive wall; the inner wall enclosed a bawn, and surrounding this was a moat covered on three sides (the east lay open) by the outer wall, where a smaller tower stood. The tower-keep itself was 86 ft high, and the precipitous sides of the castle-rock were layered with bricks and mortar. At high tide the walled landing within the moat was capable of accommodating a ship of 100 tons displacement. The South Range viewed from the inner bailey of Ludlow Castle. Attacking forces would be raked with fire from elevated positions by the defending garrison within the battlements. The castle is a ruined medieval fortification in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire, standing on a promontory overlooking the River Teme. The castle was probably founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman conquest and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England. During the civil war of the 12th century the castle changed hands several times between the de Lacys and rival claimants, and was further fortified with a Great Tower and a large outer bailey. In the mid-13th century, Ludlow was passed on to Geoffrey de Geneville who rebuilt part of the inner bailey, and the castle played a part in the Second Barons War. Roger Mortimer acquired the castle in 1301, further extending the internal complex of buildings, and the Mortimer family went on to hold Ludlow for over a century. Richard, the Duke of York, inherited the castle in 1425, and it became an important symbol of Yorkist authority during the Wars of the Roses. When Richards son, Edward IV, seized the throne in 1461 it passed into the ownership of the Crown. Ludlow Castle was chosen as the seat of the Council in the Marches of Wales, effectively acting as the capital of Wales, and it was extensively renovated throughout the 16th century. By the 17th century the castle was luxuriously appointed, hosting cultural events such as the first performance of John Miltons masque Comus. Ludlow Castle was held by the Royalists during the English Civil War of the 1640s, until it was besieged and taken by a Parliamentarian army in 1646. The contents of the castle were sold off and a garrison was retained there for much of the interregnum. With the Restoration of 1660, the Council was reestablished and the castle repaired, but Ludlow never recovered from the civil war years and when the Council was finally abolished in 1689 it fell into neglect. Then youll love wonderful Haworth Village, Yorkshire. The picturesque village is known worldwide for its association with the Brontë family, who had their home here. A windswept land of heather and wild moors, it is hardly surprising that this region became the inspiration for the classic works of the Brontë sisters Haworth itself, however, is a fascinating village in its own right and richly repays time devoted to a study of its intriguing past. Its especially lovely in the winter when the mood is very gothic, matching the novels perfectly Plus I had a cracking scone in one of the local cafes opposite the used book store here.
