- Today marks the 100th anniversary of end of WWI. This is my great-great-great grandfather in the year 1917. He would later die in combat in September, 1918 at the Battle of Drocourt-Quéant Line.

Like many who were getting into photography in the first half of the 20th century, Withers first camera was a @kodak Brownie. His sister had bought it for her boyfriend, who would lend it to Ernest. The first glance of what was to come for Withers career was when Marva Trotter, the supermodel and on-and-off wife of heavyweight champion Joe Lewis, visited Withers school at one point. Brownie in hand, Withers knew he had to make a picture. Standing in the back of the auditorium with the Brownies wide angle lens, however, did not produce the frame Withers wanted. Eye to the viewfinder, he crept forward until he was almost at the stage before he snapped the shutter. Breaking his focus from the composition, he realized that most of the auditorium was snickering at him who does this kid think he is? Getting so close to a supermodel to take a picture? Withers had the last laugh, however, as in the coming weeks his photo of Ms. Trotter was in high demand around the school. (Unfortunately these images have been lost to time) Withers displayed the makings of a great photographer. He knew how to compose a shot. Many, especially in this era before everyone carried a camera in their pocket, would have snapped a shot from the back of the auditorium just to say they had a picture of this famous woman. He could focus intently on his craft and ignore hustle and bustle around him.
