This darling girl is Cassie, short for Cassiterite. She’s a large-footed myotis, commonly known as a fishing bat. Myotis use echlocation to find freshwater invertebrates and small fish just below the surface of water and scoop them up in their feet, which are very large by microbat standards. The lovely people who found her and called us, live near a waterway. We think Cassie may have clipped one of her wings on something while flying. She had moved when our rescuer arrived but, not giving up, she searched and found Cassie hanging on a backyard brick wall, dehydrated and cranky. Cassie will be in care til the bruising on her wing heals. Luckily she loves her diet of brine shrimp, including slurping up the juice. Yum. If you see a bat on its own in the daytime, it needs help. Our first premmie flying fox of the season. Flying foxes usually give birth in spring and early summer so it wont be long until baby season is upon us. Last year we had terrible flowering over winter which led to a starvation event and an abnormally large intake of premmie babies. We do absolutely everything we can for these babies but unfortunately they do have a guarded prognosis. This year we have had beautiful flowering across our local area and there are lots of very fat and happy mums flying around at the moment. Hey y’all, read on. This is BIG news!! . Our biologists have captured a subadult mountain lion with reproductive and tail defects. This marks the first time we’re seeing abnormalities linked to inbreeding depression in mountain lions! 😳 . P-81’s kinked tail is shaped like the letter “L” and he has only one descended testicle. . “This is something we hoped to never see,” said wildlife biologist Jeff Sikich. “We knew that genetic diversity was low here, but this is the first time we have actually seen physical evidence of it. This grave discovery underscores the need for measures to better support this population.” . Scientists have been studying the mountain lion population for 18 years in the Santa Monica Mountains and surrounding region. . This evidence of potential inbreeding depression, as opposed to just low genetic diversity, makes the case for building a proposed wildlife crossing even more urgent. The bridge will connect populations of wildlife south of the 101 Freeway to those in other natural areas to the north in the Simi Hills, the Santa Susana Mountains, and ultimately in Los Padres National Forest. . Luego fue trasladada por personal del #SAG y voluntarios de nuestro centro de rehabilitación. . ⚕ La paciente llegó muy grave con múltiples laceraciones y hematomas ocasionados por las mordeduras de los perros. A pesar de que se hicieron todos los esfuerzos posibles, la paciente no logró sobrevivir y murió debido a la gravedad de sus lesiones. . ⚠️Los perros vagos y asilvestrados son una gran amenaza para la fauna silvestre de nuestro país. Son una de las principales causas de muerte de pudúes, huemules, zorros, pumas, guanacos, vicuñas, entre otros. Además de causar su muerte, pueden transmitir enfermedades infecciosas como distemper, parvovirus y rabia. 🔍Fuente: CONAF . Esta problemática es difícil de resolver, por eso llamamos a tomar conciencia. Photo by David Chancellor @chancellordavid taking over the feed here @everydayextinction with new work from Kenya looking at conservation in the time of Covid - Serval cat, Timau, Laikipia, Kenya - when we talk about an increase in bushmeat poaching, both for trade, and domestic use, we do so now in conjunction with Covid-19 and the complete cessation of tourism here in Kenya. What we don’t often consider, and what we should consider, is the huge increase in the pointless (my fucking blood is boiling here so please excuse me) slaughter of wildlife that is caught in poachers’ snares. They have no use 😡for cats such as the serval, caracal, and leopard, so when they are found in snares they are beaten to death with spades, and buried. This one was discovered by farm workers in thick bush bordering a field of crops. The obvious target was buck, for the pot. It’s tough here at the moment, unemployment is high, particularly in farming, and the safari tourism industry; where incidentally it’s extremely rare to see one of these magnificent cats, and tourists usually pay top dollar in the hope of doing so. This is the largest, healthiest serval cat any of us have ever seen here. Indeed, we responded to a leopard call, due to the size of the cat, and found the serval. I’ve said before, @dr_mathew_mutinda_ is the most extraordinary vet I’ve ever worked with, but despite his efforts, the cat’s injuries were so great that it did not survive. An utterly pointless death !! The association of serval cats with human beings dates back to the time of Ancient Egypt. Servals are depicted as gifts from Nubia in Egyptian art, and yet here I am watching the Dr remove it from its suspended death 😡😡is this where mankind has come to ?! It is a carnivorous animal, and like other species of civet, it survives on a meat-based diet, supplemented by the odd plant or fruit. Small animals such as rodents, lizards, snakes and frogs make up the majority of the masked palm civets diet, along with insects and other small creatures scuttling through the under-growth. This was my Baby Mafalda, a tiny and gorgeous Red Lynx that arrived to me 6 1/2 years ago with a terrible case of pneumonia and I couldn’t save her. She is trascendental to me for several reasons that I’ll explain here: First, she was named after my Hero Quino’s Mafalda because she was super tiny. But most importantly, she was the first one of my kids to leave me since I couldn’t save her and she was the first real Death that I experienced in the 28 years prior to her departure. Up until Mafaldita and Guille left their bodies, I had not experienced a significative Death and God was it a Renaissance for me. During the last hours of Mafaldita’s Life, I played her at least 100 times one of the most beautiful Musical Pieces ever composed: “Hymn To Nowhere” by my Beloved Brother @henrysaiz By all means I invite you to play that Masterpiece, download his full album called “Reality is for those who are not strong enough to confront their dreams” on any Music platform like Apple Music or Shopify, listen to Hymn To Nowhere and share with me that brutal sorrow and anguish that I felt in those last twelve hours while I watched my daughter Mafaldita merge again with Infinity as life left her body. This guy was in a backyard and was left alone for several hours, but would not leave; there was not a crowd of people watching him. Please see our follow up post for the entire explanation. •••••••• There’s a new kid on the block. This 2-year-old male mountain lion was treed by onlookers in north Phoenix. @azgfd had to intervene. Due to the proximity of bystanders, this boy couldn’t safely flee back to the wild. Once a mountain lion is in captivity at all, they sadly can never be released. They’re territorial mammals, and they require miles - up to 135 square - to roam. Chances of releasing a mountain lion in another lion’s territory, coupled with the high risk of human habituation or imprinting are too great. We are sad this wild one will remain in our sanctuary, but we are so grateful that AZGFD brought him to us so he can live. As you can imagine, mountain lions - not to mention bears, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, etc. - eat A LOT. We receive no state or federal funding to care for our wildlife. From rescue to release 🦇 I had the pleasure of rescuing and releasing this lovely black flying fox named Fig. Fig got himself caught in some ‘slice and dice’ fruit netting while trying to feed on some tasty ripe figs. This netting is not wildlife friendly and can cause horrific injuries. Any netting that you can poke a finger through is not safe for wildlife. Thankfully Fig wasn’t caught for very long or too badly as the home owner called us in as soon as he spotted Fig. I rescued him and he was assessed as only having minor injuries. He spent a couple of weeks in care being monitored to make sure these injuries didn’t progress further before he was cleared for release. I released Fig back into his local colony to continue to perform his important ecological services. The home owner removed his inappropriate netting so nothing else could become entangled and injured. Safe travels Fig! - @jasmine_vink on Instagram

What kind of cat is this? I was sent this message from some friends in the forestry and wildlife department here in Perú. Margay I said (Leopardus wiedi). This margay is maybe 2-3 months old in this picture, taken as a pet from the wild likely from the burrow where her mom left her. The department drove three hours to rescue her from this situation, and another two to drop her off in the local community where l could pick her up. Shes a feisty one! It was a day when I saw Amur leopard for my first time. Beautiful October, silent forest, checking camera traps during our first expedition to the northern part of Leopard Land NP... I was out of humor, a bit tired, deep in my thoughts when ranger cried: Leopard, leopard, look! It was in about 100 meters of us, running away to the pines grove. I thought it was a ghost till the moment we got camera trap records with us and the leopard with time difference of 5 minutes. Die Selkirk Rex besitzt eine üppigere Lockenpracht als andere Rex-Rassen. Der britische Look ist aber durchaus erwünscht. Die Selkirk Rex ist die jüngste Lockenkatze. Die Urmutter der Selkirk Rex stammt aus einem amerikanischen Tierheim. Hier fiel sie direkt durch ihr gelocktes Fell auf. Sie wurde mit einem Perserkater verpaart. Die Amerikaner waren begeistert, ihre eigene Lockenkatze zu haben, da die meisten anderen Rexe in Europa entstanden. Die Selkirk Rex ist eine eher ruhigere Katzenrasse und nicht ganz so quirlig, wie die europäischen Rexe. Das Lockengen wirkt sich nicht nur auf das Fell aus. Da es bei der Selkirk Rex im Gegensatz zu den anderen Rexen dominant vererbt wird, sind sogar ihre Schnurrhaare gekräuselt. ________________________________________ Natürlich möchten wir die Gelegenheit nutzen und unsere Selkirk Rex-Furriends vorstellen. “SI ABAH” TELAH DI LEPASKAN KEMBALI KE HABITAT ASLINYA Setelah hampir 2 (dua) bulan menjalani masa perawatan di Bandung Zoological Garden (Kebun Binatang Bandung), satu individu macan tutul jawa siap dilepasliarkan ke habitat aslinya di SM Gunung Sawal pada tanggal 25 Agustus 2020. Keputusan tersebut diambil setelah Tim dokter hewan dari Bandung Zoological Garden menyatakan bahwa macan tutul jawa yang diberi nama “Si Abah” ini dalam kondisi sehat secara klinis dan layak untuk dilepasliarkan ke habitat alaminya. “Si Abah saat ini terlihat aktif dan meraung serta mengalami defekasi dan urinasi secara normal. Jadi, secara klinis sudah siap dilepasliarkan”. Mengembalikan “Si Abah” ke Gunung Sawal tidak akan mengubah struktur populasi dan sebaran macan tutul jawa di Gunung Sawal,” ungkap Kepala Balai Besar KSDA Jawa Barat, Ammy Nurwati Untuk diketahui, The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species mengkategorikan macan tutul jawa (Panthera pardus melas Cuvier, 1809) sebagai critically endangered serta termasuk dalam Appendix I CITES. “Pemerintah, sejak diterbitkannya PP No. 7 thn 1999 ttg Pengawetan Jenis Tumbuhan dan Satwa, telah memasukkan macan tutul jawa sebagai salah satu satwa dilindungi diperkuat dengan terbitnya PermenLHK Nomor : P.20/MENLHK/SEKJEN/KUM.1/6/2018 tentang Jenis Tumbuhan dan Satwa yang Dilindungi,” terang Ammy menjelaskan. Macan tutul jawa merupakan salah satu icon satwa liar di Pulau Jawa. Eksistensinya sebagai predator puncak di hutan perlu terus dipertahankan. Jangan sampai kepunahan yang menimpa harimau jawa juga dialami oleh macan tutul jawa. “Oleh karena itu, upaya-upaya untuk menjaga habitat macan tutul jawa melalui kegiatan perlindungan kawasan maupun pembinaan habitat akan terus ditingkatkan guna menjamin ketersediaan pakan bagi macan tutul jawa,” pungkas Ammy menutup pembicaraan. We have some sad news to report. 😔 We’ve learned that an adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons (or anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as ARs). Link to press release in bio. . Both deaths occurred in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains north of the Santa Monica Mountains this year. We recently received the necropsy reports. . This marks just the second time in our 24-year study that a bobcat, in this case B-372, has been determined to have died directly from the effects of these poisons, and the first time in 23 years. P-76, a subadult male captured in Northridge late last year and jointly studied by NPS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), died of anticoagulant toxicosis in the Santa Susana Mountains. . “We basically never see this in bobcats, so this is an important finding” said Joanne Moriarty, a biologist who has worked on bobcat research for more than 15 years. According to Moriarty, an examination performed during her capture in January determined that she was in good health, and that she had given birth in the past. . Researchers have seen coagulopathy (uncontrolled bleeding) leading to death in coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions in the study area, but typically not bobcats. . P-76 is the sixth collared mountain lion to die of coagulopathy and the third in the last two years. He was captured and collared by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers in November 2019 in an urban neighborhood in Northridge, just outside of Los Angeles. . In the case of P-76, his collar went on “mortality mode” the night of January 29, 2020. His carcass was recovered the following morning by NPS and CDFW biologists in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Highway 118. RAT POISON & THE ENVIRONMENT: This male Bobcat was treated by Wildlife Care of Southern California @wildlifecareofsocal before he died and weighed in at 8 lbs where he should have weighed at least 20lbs - he was extremely dehydrated and anemic, he didnt have a chance. It has been proven by the National Park Service that big cats are predisposed to mange (through a compromised immune system), by ingesting poisoned rodents. The poison is stored in the liver further compromising the body; once the mites take hold and multiply in this weakened state, the bobcats immune system cannot fight the shear numbers of mites as they literally suck the life out of him. Rodenticides dont just kill rodents — they also kill the animals that prey on rats and mice, including imperiled species like spotted owls, San Joaquin kit foxes and mountain lions. Recently several of Southern Californias big cats, including this Bobcat, have been found dead with multiple super-toxic rat poisons in their bloodstreams. The California Ecosystems Protection Act (A.B. 1788) would greatly restrict second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides — the most toxic class of rat poisons — throughout the state. Theres a wide range of safer alternatives on the market today that dont pose such dangers and will have a better chance of success if the bill becomes law. Lets get this lifesaving bill over the finish line. Urge Gov.
