This morning Maggie and I found this little guy on the side of the road crying. If you know me, I couldn’t just leave him there. We brought him home and called wildlife rescue. We put him in a box with a towel and heating pad to keep him warm. This little flying squirrel fell from his nest with little fur and eyes still closed. On Monday our little Romy crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Her parents, Rachel and Brendan are heartbroken beyond belief. Romy was and always will be the mascot of Hollywood Crime Scene. She was often the third mic on the show. And toward the end of her life she took to sitting on Rachel’s lap while we recorded. She was a friend to everyone she met and her presence will be missed greatly. Words can hardly describe the impact she had on her parent’s lives and the joy and comfort she brought them every day. Happy Caturday yall! Anybody watch “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix? I was like WOW! It made me sit down and really think about just how much time we spend on our phones and what it does to/for us. I’m actually grateful that I grew up in a time where there were no cell phones or social media (be quiet, don’t be calling me old! Lol!) There can be a lot of negative effects...some you see right away and some you don’t....so I’ve been making it a point to put my phone down a little more and take time to enjoy life “offline” Try to spend a little more time with my kitties and loved ones! A lot of times we all just go go go.....I know I do! Compassion fatigue and burnout in rescue are serious and when you add things like social media, the pandemic and all that’s going on, it can be somewhat of a “purrrrfect Storm”.....was that a bad time to use that cat pun? Ok ok 😂😹 Just wanna remind all my peeps in and out of rescue to take care of your mental health....we say it a lot but I don’t think it can be stressed enough, especially in these times! I’ve started making a conscious effort to take photos of special AND ordinary moments of my life from now on. Funny gyms are closed when exercise plays a crucial part in health, but you can cram people arm 2 arm in a plane, shop in Walmart or any other big corporation but not your small mom & pops stores deemed nonessential. I cancelled my gym membership, do cardio outside & invested in weights. Get outside! Get sun, breath in fresh air(w/out a mask)& ground your feet in the soil, grass or sand. Beaches are open & there’s no better air to breathe than the ionized air coming off the ocean. Like I’ve been preaching for 8 years, EAT REAL FOOD! Foods that energize & hydrate the body & help you think straight. We’ve had 7 months since this all started to try taking our health into our own hands by boosting our immune system w/fruits, veggies, smoothies, green juices, fasting & GOOD water (NOT TAP that your govt says is good but if you test has fluoride, chlorine & poisons in it). I mentioned in my live the other day, I feel what’s preventing more people from waking up during this time is drinking too much fluoride & eating too much processed & fast food. Gut issues are a serious problem w/Americans & if your gut isn’t right, which has been called the second brain, you won’t have “gut feelings” or a strong intuition about what’s going on around us. The fluoride that calcifies your pineal gland doesn’t help either. The narrative is being controlled & everything is getting censored. You can’t google things & get different perspectives anymore. Same w/the news, you only get what the powers that be want you to see. Who controls the media, controls the mind. Dig deeper. Lastly, STAND UP! Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month has been tough. As someone who doesn’t have a clinical background (not a therapist), but works in mental health, it’s been heavy to wake up and dive into this kinda of work, even after a little buffer time. Yesterday I learned that about 31% of self-reported unpaid caregivers for adults reported having seriously considered suicide in the 30 days before completing the survey* which is significantly higher than average. A lot of people in my position are having a tough time. I’ve also learned that: - The language we use to talk about suicide can create stigma. “Committed suicide” vs “died by suicide.” It’s not a crime and treating it as such can keep ppl from talking about it when they’re struggling. ** - You see higher rates of suicide when you segment the data by gender, race, age, etc. so we have to do our best in affecting change in the systemic factors that contribute to higher risks for certain groups, ex: voting for people (local, state & fed) that prioritize health programs, while supporting community interventions and a supportive environment at home. - There is no shortage of stories of hope. Connectedness to individuals, families, and communities has been correlated with interrupted suicide ideation and risk. So talking to someone can mean a lot to your mental wellbeing or the mental wellbeing of someone you know.
