Here we are in my character Rowan’s bedroom on set of the feature we filmed this February. ... We spent a lot of time squeezed into this tiny room with the camera rolling. (Literally, we were piled in on top of each other. My ear, chin and shoulder became a tripod for the RED.) There was fear, love, and rage in this room; there was also an uncontrollable laughing fit, a lot of tea and several nightmares. We made mistakes in this room and I think we made some magic, too. ... I had mixed feelings about wrapping this location. Leaving meant we were almost done shooting, that it would soon be time to say goodbye. It also meant we were closer to creating something we can share with you. 🥰 ... The other day, our director @a_m_s_y sent me a screenshot of my name in the opening credits and I remembered that this was all real. Griffin is thrilled to introduce the recipient of our Summer 2020 Griffin Art Projects North Shore Studio Residency Award, Lindsay McIntyre! Lindsay will be presenting a live artist talk over Zoom on Saturday, August 29th at 1 PM. Lindsay McIntyre is a film artist with an MFA in Film Production from Concordia and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Alberta. She applies her interest in analogue technologies, film chemistry and structure to make award-winning short 16mm films and expanded cinema performances. Her works are often process-based and involve documentary and experimental techniques. Interested simultaneously in the apparatus of cinema, portraiture, representation and personal histories, she bridges gaps in collective experience and remains dedicated to integrating theory and practice, form and content. Her current research involves the autoethnographical exploration of intergenerational trauma and the grandmother effect as a biological survival mechanism and also the ways and means of Indigenizing institutions. Internationally, she has contributed a body of knowledge to the practice of silver gelatin emulsion making and coating for motion picture film and teaches this and other celluloid-based practices wherever anyone will listen, aiming to make analogue filmmaking accessible. She was honoured with the REVEAL Indigenous Art Award from the Hnatyshyn Foundation (2017) and was awarded the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for Excellence in Media Arts by the Canada Council (2013). She is Assistant Professor of Film + Screen Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design on unceded Coast Salish territories and is of Inuit and settler Scottish decent. five years ago today, my first film premiered @ifccenter in downtown manhattan. it was one of the first documentary films from PUERTO RICO to receive a theatrical release in the united states, and it tells the story of how PUERTO RICAN TRANS QUEER communities organized to pass the first anti-discrimination bill protecting LGBTQ+ individuals in the history of the island. we fought for months to get the film into theaters, and after opening, its run was extended twice due to demand. we had no marketing budget, we had no celebrity endorsements, and we hand-delivered the posters to the theater ourselves. we knew we were on the front lines of fighting for representation, and the experience for me was a horrifying, dizzying baptism by fire. racism is a coercive, multi-dimensional hydra, and up until that point i had the privilege of not knowing as much. so much has changed in that time, yet there’s still so much more work to do. the life of this film has been complicated, and will be articulated in its own time in a more appropriate space, though as the guardian of this work, this anniversary has got me feeling emotional, proud, and more committed than ever. thank you MALA MALA, and the entire MALA team for teaching me how to see, how to do, how to be. vive PUERTO RICO, vive MALA MALA! - @dan_sickles on Instagram

We get asked a lot of questions about our writing process, so we thought we’d say a bit about the making of the title track to our new album, Odyssey - which it turns out did take a while to coalesce. Several years ago we were working on a track and just couldnt get it to click. We were messing around and reversed the sound waves of one of the melody lines on the computer; out came the hazy outlines of a different melody, which inspired the chorus for Odyssey. It had an escapist, otherworldly quality to it that we liked. We still werent sure where it was going though, so we left it, made the Tear the Roots album, and last year came back to it, trying out the verse parts from another demo with that chorus. It finally fell into place. We wanted the production to be nostalgic and spacious, and we wanted a human warmth to go with the lyrical themes of vulnerability, self-realisation etc - so we used acoustic drums, real bass guitar and guitar, and strings. The piano riff added another layer of journey. The track was originally a lot longer with some more expansive instrumental sections, but we felt we had to make it concise for the album :) Live in 2021, this one could take on a whole new horizon... #odyssey #makingof #musicproduction #newmusic #theprocess - @kaleidamusic on Instagram
