I never post anything personal here- but this is the exception to the exceptions. This Heavy Metal Gods first album was the gateway drug to the rest of my life!!! I was in the 4th grade when I first heard I Dont Know coming from a 5th grader’s boom box. The next day I begged my mother to buy me Blizzard of Oz. We hit the local record store, the clerk opens the glass case for the cassette, and my mother looks at the cover and says, Is this really what you want?!?!?! to which of course I respond “YES, YES, YES!” while frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog! I listened to this cassette til it stretched out and I had to buy a new one. Thus began my head first dive into the rabbit hole of hard rock and heavy metal, and subsequently my desire to have a career in the music industry. What a gift one album can give! Ive had many dreams come true but now its finally come full circle with having the opportunity to work on Ozzys new music. With Reed-ian concision, the character cut through the tangle of a mutual appreciation society that Reed and David Bowie had built with 1972’s Transformer. Before the two iconoclasts teamed up, Bowie was simply a fan who had become obsessed with the 1967 debut LP by Reed’s band the Velvet Underground. The Velvets might not have sold a ton of records, but in being attached to the allure of Andy Warhol and delivering songs about taboo subjects, the New York band became infamous and influential. Bowie, among others in ’70s glam rock, internalized both the Velvets’ sound and Reed’s words. “Just the verbal and musical zeitgeist that Lou created, the nature of his lyric writing had been hitherto unknown in rock, I think,” Bowie said in 1997s Classic Albums. “He gave us the environment in which to put our more theatrical vision. Ο Jesse Burke φωτογράφιζε τη κόρη του, Clover, μεταξύ πέντε και εννέα ετών, κατά τη διάρκεια ταξιδιών που έκαναν διασχίζοντας την Αμερική. Οι εικόνες αυτές αποτελούν τμήμα μιας σειράς 134 φωτογραφιών που δημοσιεύτηκαν σε βιβλίο της Daylight Books τον Νοέμβριο του 2015, το οποίο έκλεινε με σημειώσεις από τους δυο συνεργάτες – πατέρα και κόρη. Η σημείωση του Burke γράφει σε ένα σημείο: «Ο νους μου είναι γεμάτος κινούμενες εικόνες, με εσένα να τρέχεις στη θάλασσα καθώς χασκογελάνε οι γλάροι από ψηλά, με εσένα να μαζεύεις μακρόστενες λωρίδες από φλοιό σημύδας και ριγωτά φτερά από γαλοπούλες, με εσένα κι εμένα να πλένουμε αθόρυβα τα δόντια μας ο ένας πλάι στον άλλο, κάτω από το βουητό της πράσινης λάμπας φθορισμού στην τουαλέτα του μοτέλ μας...». Στο τέλος του βιβλίου η Clover απαντά: «Πήραμε στην αγκαλιά μας πουλιά, λαγουδάκια, σαλαμάνδρες και έντομα... Θυμάμαι τη στιγμή που είδα την ψόφια φάλαινα και πόσο άσχημα μύριζε». Το 2016, o Burke συγκαταλέχθηκε από το περιοδικό TIME ανάμεσα στους 50 φωτογράφους που αξίζει να ακολουθήσεις στο Instagram. Τότε, με αφορμή τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης Wild & Precious στο μουσείο Rhode Island School of Design στο Providence, είχε πει στο VICE: «Πολύ γρήγορα συνειδητοποίησα ότι η σχέση μας δεν ήταν μια σχέση σκηνοθέτη και υποκειμένου, αλλά μια σχέση συνεργάτη προς συνεργάτη. This Wednesday at 11 AM PST, were dropping brand new pressings of @ZAObands debut and sophomore releases: The Splinter Shards the Birth of Separation [Clear Green with White Smoke / 506 copies] & Where Blood And Fire Bring Rest [Clear Orange with White Smoke / 512 copies]. Created in partnership with @UnoriginalVinyl. Collaborated from-start-to-finish with the musicians on the albums & overseen by the current line up of Zao, these LPs: • Have, for the first time, been mastered specifically for vinyl. • Have partnered Zao back up with inceptive design illustrator David Rankin to unearth & restore the original paintings for these albums. While in the process of unarchiving these iconic masterpieces from the their 20+ year hiding places behind attic armoires in Pennsylvania, more unused artwork was found & restored for this reissue series. • Feature a lush, matte finish jacket. • Contain lengthy retrospective essays for each release’s insert written by David about “creating the nightmarish art of Zao.” • Include full-sized, 12x12 card stock, double sided art prints (2 double-sided art prints included with “Splinter”) of high detail, high resolution restored artwork created at the time of the original releases, & in some cases, reimagined (1 double-sided art print included in “Blood & Fire”) to dial up the intensity of these already-ferocious records. • For sale— Roky Erickson press kit featuring 2 x handsome 8”x10” promo photos and a press release letter on Roky’s return to San Francisco where he was backed by the Explosives. The gig was on Friday May 30th 1980 at the Back D.O.R. There are some light scuffs to the bottom of the photo on the right, and the letter has some tiny nibbles out of the top edge like it has been torn from a pad of paper.
