Mas me encanta sempre reouvir esse Blue Train, de 1957, tido por muitos como o primeiro álbum solo de John Coltrane. Gravado com um timaço que tem Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew e a “cozinha” monumental de Paul Chambers e Philly Joe Jones, o disco fluí deliciosamente. O solo de trompete de Lee Morgan em Moment’s Notice mostra que ele poderia ter sido tão grande e influente quanto Miles. Mas Morgan, que tinha apenas 20 anos quando gravou com Trane, tretou demais em várias ocasiões da sua curta vida e acabou morto aos 33 anos pela própria mulher com um tiro no coração numa discussão entre eles no intervalo de uma gig em um clube de Nova York. This happens enough time - at the first listening the album no longer evokes love, but the more you try to understand it, the deeper it starts to catch. In this record, the design and the vinyl itself are especially catchy. At first, it is not attractive at all, but in the rays of sunlight it becomes delightful. We’re making all the right pandemic purchases chez Holmes/Wise. No good excuse for not having acquired this on vinyl way sooner, though I’ve been reading the incredible memoir of @kathy.valentine which coincided with my finally finding the right original pressing. Also, hearing only the title track on vinyl on a K-Tel compilation (2nd pic) I’ve owned since ‘83 simply wasn’t cutting it anymore. ‘Vacation’ was the first pop song I truly fell in love with, couldn’t possibly get sick of (still) and is largely the reason that even during my punkest years, I have only really ever been able to write pop songs.
